those old kramer are cool and heavy too
chick-ee-duh
my advice: Go to your local music store, the one that sells lots of sheet music and get their recommendations on a -'guitar made easy'-type of book, that suits your style don't be afraid to spend $30 on a hobby that can be with you, your whole life

| The guitar player's thread Posted: 10/1/2006 6:26:17 AM | I've only got a Washburn EA20 right now and an Epi Les Paul Standard
I used to have a ( I believe it was a 60's reissue) Fender Strat, an '84 Kramer Baretta, a Hondo something or other ( I can't remember what it was called, but it was one of those really pointy 80's guitars. the headstock was shaped like a lightning bolt. ha!), a Mann Strat copy (my first guitar- bought at a store in rural Saskatchewan that specialized in Carpets and musical instruments (?)) I dissected that cheap Mann Strat and made it into an EVH yellow and black striped. Also used to have a Kamoraska Classical.
I sure wish I still had that Kramer! On my wishlist - White Gibson Les Paul Studio w/gold hardware is my current favorite on my "to get" list.
Favorite stompbox Boss Metalzone
fave Amp - (almost) any Marshall

my advice on true bypass ---google 'radial ' they sell some cool true bypass boxes and they are from B.C.
danny/paulchino II I would suggest:
a roland gr-09 guitar synth w/ the 200 sound expansion card I have one, hours of fun put it thorugh some guitar pedals you can really get that king crimson thing going with some of the early square wave sounds and a bit of fuzz/phase used guitar synths are cheap on ebay

| The guitar player's thread Posted: 10/5/2006 5:38:52 PM | | Where's a decent place in canada to buy some quality 500k pots and a good 3 way toggle switch for a les paul? I have to completely rewire my guitar. | |
|
| The guitar player's thread Posted: 10/5/2006 6:02:49 PM | Price isn't the problem here, quality is.
Get Allen/Bradley, Clarostat, or Bournes pots.
Switch?
Get the Gibson part, made by Switchcraft.
If you want cheap, go through an electornics supply biz, like Electrosonic, or Gervais, ...don't expect much of a discount for a small order though.
|
| The guitar player's thread Posted: 10/5/2006 7:59:03 PM | LATE

| The guitar player's thread Posted: 10/8/2006 9:06:27 AM | | Just re-did my action on my bc-rich this month. I was really nervous. But I have to say for any one wondering it is not hard to lower your action and get the lesPaul feel on a guitar. My playing/speed as doubled. I feel like Petrucci. Lots of walkthrus out there on the net. | |

| The guitar player's thread Posted: 10/13/2006 1:46:58 PM | THIS MONTH'S ADVICE
Go grab all your old guitar pedals and plug them all in with some patch chords
rediscover the trippiness you have been missing

|
| whats up Posted: 10/14/2006 8:59:46 AM | Ok may as well join in ...
You want to know what gear I use? Man this could be a long list so here goes
Amps: Fender DeVille 410, Fender Tweed Hot Rod Deluxe with V30s, Tech 21 TM60 for reharsals (Love this lil amp so much I just bought another one so I can daisy chain them. Can't wait till it arrives at my doorstep).
Guitars: Fernandes Dave Kushner Ravelle Elite sig model with sustainer and custom custom at the bridge, SE Fender Strat Ash fitted with Gilmoure EMG pups, Squire Strat fitted with noiseless Dimarzios (slowly becoming my go to git lol.), Godin xtSA, Epiphone Masterbilt accoustic, Morris 10 string accoustic, Washburn beater accoustic, 1966 Hagstrum vintage bass (all original parts).
Effects: Furman pedal board, DD-20, EH MM, EH EM, Boss OD-3, Boss CS-3, Ibanez all analog phaser, Ibanez all analog chorus, Digi-Delay, Boss BF-3, Boss TU-2, Buffer. Boss GT-8, Roland GR-20, Behringer FCB 1010 Midi Foot Controller. And probably some more I'm forgetting. And yeah, I use each and every effect, amp and guitar live except for the beater and the bass ...lol

| whats up Posted: 10/15/2006 10:08:24 AM | | Question for you all.... what do you use to keep your accoustic clean and dust free? | |
|
| whats up Posted: 10/15/2006 10:16:07 AM | | I ALWAYS keep my acoustics in their guitar case. I hate dusty guitars! To keep them clean I always wash my hands before I play any of my gits and wipe them clean with a small soft cloth (a face towel will usually do the trick) when I'm done playing. | |
|
| whats up Posted: 10/15/2006 10:25:48 AM | I know what you mean Melody maker.... but if I keep my git in the case, then I don't play it often enough.
If I keep it out on a stand then I am prone to pick it up more often and play it.
So you never use anything like Pledge or other kinds of wood polish? I hope I am not adding/rubbing something onto my git that would/will shorten it's playing life.
|
| whats up Posted: 10/15/2006 11:30:30 AM | Nah, I rarely polish my guitars. I may polish my electrics every couple of months but never touch my acoustics. The only thing I normally do is once a year I'll remove all my strings from all my gits and use some lemon oil on the fretboard. This prevents fretboard shrinkage resulting in protruding frets. This is especially true with Ebony fretboards.
As far as pledge or polishing your acoustics I would stay clear of that. Acoustics need to breath and polishing them simply plugs up the pores. It takes about 3 yrs to actually break in an acoustic, kind of like studio monitors, there is a break in period to get that milky sound and get rid of the harshness that is usually associated with new monitors and acoustic guitars.
|
| whats up Posted: 10/15/2006 5:57:48 PM | Avoid using anything with silicone in it, especially with a valuable instrument. If, ....it requires a spot repair, it will be next to impossible to get anything to stick to it.
Silicone - BAD!
Dr.Ducks Ax Wax - GOOD! | |

| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 10/22/2006 10:13:56 AM | | I have a mexican tele and it sucks! but I have a mid eighties HM strat that is japanese and it kicks ass (but very heavy) | |
|
| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 10/25/2006 8:41:16 AM | I'll be the third (in recent history of this thread) to champion a Squier/non american fender. I picked up an early MIJ Squier Strat for $85 bucks and it has that glassy growl that a good strat+tube amp can get. In stock form, it shames my other Fenders.
I think it takes that long for a good electric to break in as well. Especially a set neck instrument, IMO. Historic Les Pauls are obvioulsy not vintage, but I think they sound better the older they get and the finish sinks in.

| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 10/25/2006 12:02:38 PM | Can anybody tell me anything about Line 6, Spider 2 guitar amps. I recently picked up a 30 watt-made in England. Quite happy with it, but don't know much about the company that makes them.
Also picked up a Washburn, X series-made in China, guitar. Quite happy with it as well. But if anyone can share some info on them that would be great, thanks.
|
| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 10/25/2006 1:38:52 PM | I think the Line 6 sounds like shit...you'd probably agree once you take a listen to better amps...trade it in for a good tube amp....
....until you hear good stuff....you don't know what you're missing....
