| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 10/25/2006 5:20:26 PM | Digitally modelled amps sound like ass.
They are a waste of time, and in fact, will teach you how NOT to play electric guitar.
......sad. | |

| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 10/25/2006 6:44:39 PM | | Thanks for the feedback. Does anyone got suggestions on a good tube amp for a beginer. About 30 watts, nothing too special to start off with, thanks again. | |

If you see the earlier pages 'we ' recommend the
peavey classic 30 as a good value tube amp
what style do you play?
there are others too | |

| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 10/25/2006 7:29:16 PM | What he said ^^^^
(Peavey Delta 30 115)
In fact, the best way to learn how to play electric guitar is to find a cheap tube amp with nothing but a volume and a tone control.
That way, you play the amp, not the other way around

I've been playing acoustic about 10 years- mostly folk and blues music and am only now getting into electrics. I am told my finger picking is pretty good by other people, but I'd like to try learning some thrash metal and it's going to take me a while to advance with that picking style and speed, plus the technical side of it. Really do appreciate all the advice I recieve here and will be checking out the Peavey amp soon as I can, thanks.
late thanks for that advice. I agree I should be playing the amp, not the amp playing me, especially when getting starting.

| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 10/29/2006 10:12:37 AM | Hey...I feel the need throw throw in my opinion, humble that it is...A while ago I posted some messges re the Line 6 spidey 2...I went through the worst guitar hell of my life with it. I would never never use this amp, and conscience moves me to stress this fact.
The lads here talked about tube amps being the way...I had always known that but got sucked into the Line 6 amp modelling crap. So now I have a VoxAC30. What a machine. Several gigs with it and everyone of them have moved me through playing barriers and stumbling blocks. If you don't want the vox...try any good tube amp...its the difference between feeling frusterated with your tone all the time, verses constantly looking forward to playing.
On another note..I rented a Gibson SG to try....ahem...and it fell off the strap, hit the dance floor and snapped the headstock. Hoping I am not on the hook, sposed to hear back this week. Now I have strap locks and will never play without them. Rented a Les Paul...my god...through the Vox...might just be the rig for the rest of my days.
Like Guitar Man said..life is too short for crappy tone...never a truer word said.

| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 10/29/2006 10:26:10 AM | chthonic, Been playing Power metal for 8 years, metal for 15. I must say the most important to learn are the following.
Stance: make sure your fretting hand is vertical, not slanted.
speed, start very slow. make sure every note is played, practice the same lick faster and faster.
Picking hand. find a comfortable anchor point on the arm, make sure your wrist is free to move. Use your arm and butterfly the string, never use your wrist.
Learn sweeps, very tackfull approach to wail off notes. Arpeggios are a must.
Need advice don’t hesitate to ask, Welcome to Metal. Good luck.

yes ' life is too short for bad tone'
sorry to hear about the sg schaller strap locks are my best friend, I send them off on all the guitars I build.... I put too much work into crafting an instrument to have it get a broken neck. PLUS as a guitar player you feel more confident to move around cause your guitar is secure. Kinda like how we drive faster with our seat belts on.......... ok I did not say that last part.
|
| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 10/29/2006 7:20:46 PM | For any guitar (except SGs, not a substantive enough neck/body joint), I've always preferred the old style Dunlop "Straploks" to the Schallers.
When they're installed so that they're flush to the surface, they can't be beat.

| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 11/2/2006 3:51:24 PM | Hi all .. new to the site .. 2 weeks now . I just discovered this thread .. niceeeeeeeeee. :)) Great job Guitarman , and everyone else who keeps it moving :) I've been playing bar bands now for 20 years .. my gear is now down to Fender SuperChamp (Mic'ed though PA. ) , Squire Strat refitted with Mexican neck . G&L ASAT open tuned for slide (doubles as back up for the Strat too . lol ) Boss DD3 , OD1 , and an old ME5 board for the Reverbs and Choruses . The guitars travel to local gigs in Soft cases ..easier to carry . I've been through the Gibson line ..but the damn things won't stay in tune . I can leave the Strat in the truck for 3 days .. sub zero weather .. bring it out ..let it regain room temp , and when I put it through the Tuner ..it's still on the mark !!! Now that's loww maintenance . lol The Champ just keeps working too .. it has fallen off curbs , down stairs , and been knocked over by drunks on stage ..lol I really like the idea of the blocked Floyd Rose ... nice to have the tuning right under the palm :) My hint for becoming a rock star .... meet the right people . lol I haven't lol keep those fingers moving all . : band : | |

| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 11/3/2006 2:34:44 AM | hey jackbnimble
I agree a good old fender is pretty low maintenance, I do lots of mods to les pauls to help them stay intune better
usually the tuners on Gibson Les pauls are not awesome surpising for a $2000 guitar
|
| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 11/3/2006 5:25:02 AM | | Hey Guitarman I couldent agree with you more about the Les Pauls tuners being lees than acceptable. I have a gold top that I fought with for a bit untill I freaked out and welded it lol j/k. | |
|
| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 11/3/2006 8:54:38 AM | | Is it just the tuners ? or is it that one piece (thin )neck thing ? I had an SG as well ..same problems . Anyone out there looking to sell a Japanese Tele ? circa .. 80's ? The one with the two Hummers , and the single coil , and the whammy bar ? Good working guitar. | |
|
| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 11/3/2006 9:06:01 AM | I've owned two Les Paul Customs, a "cream" '68, and a '70 Black Beauty. Neither had tuner problems. I currently have a '71 SG, ...same thing.
The '68 had Yamaha tuners on it though, the original Klusons were long gone by the time I had the guitar, the other Gibsons had OEM Grovers.
I've had a lot of guitars over the years, from '40s Gibsons and '50s fenders to current production knock-offs.
I've always been able to solve any tuning problems by using well carved and dressed bone nuts, and proper set-up.
I haven't been impressed by any of the Gibson stuff since the mid '70s, ...and wouldn't bother with it.
|
| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 11/3/2006 7:02:22 PM | Just ordered the Fender Eric Johnson Signature Model Stratocaster. Did tons of research on it and finally made the call today. Should arrive at my house on Wed or Thurs. Man, I'm so psyched.......EARLY CHRISTMAS FOR GABRIEL | |
|
| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 11/3/2006 7:18:21 PM | Can anybody tell me anything about Line 6, Spider 2 guitar amps. I recently picked up a 30 watt-made in England. Quite happy with it, but don't know much about the company that makes them.
Line 6? If you have the option, return it ASAP. I own a Fender DeVille 410 and a Special edition Tweed Fender Hot Rod Deluxe with Vintage 30s. I love tubes but I also needed a practice amp that can wail at lower volumes and band practice. I've tried out Marshalls, Vox, Line 6 Spider II and the Vetta, Roland Cube 60 plus a bunch of others and they all went back to the store. What I ended up with was a Tech 21 Trademark 60. Man, this is an incredible amp. 100% Analog and tone you can die for. Hell, I use this amp exclusively now. My Fenders are collecting dust. Great for practice, rehearsals, awsome for recording (very light, only 38 lbs) and live I plug it into the PA or mike it. Let's put it this way, Les Paul himself has been using this amp exlusively for the past 9 or so years now. If you get a chance, try one out, you won't regret it one bit! Put's digital amps to shame.

I keep hearing awesome stuff about the tech 21 stuff
I wish we had a dealer here in the frozen north.........
ON gibson guitars:
the one I was talking about were the newr lespauls (2000 and on) the tuners are not awesome
Also I find that the shorter scale neck are more likely to benifit from having a compensated nut made for them ,they seem to get the sharp g string thing more than a 25.5 scale

I've owned my share of Les Pauls, From Studios, to Standards to the Custom. Quality control is so different from guitar to guitar it's nuts, and their prices have become absolutely absurd. My main Humbucker guitar now is the Fernandes Dave Kushner Ravelle Elite sig model with sustainer and custom custom at the bridge. This guitar is not very well known but let me tell you, it puts Gibsons to shame tone wise and workmanship IMO. As long as I own this Fernandes you won't see another Gibson in my house or on any of my guitar racks on stage.

You'd love it in Ontario..... so much more to choose from.....
Buuuuuuut, it's all mostly dreck anyway, ....esp. amps.
I still like my '71 SG, ....like butta'
But, I wouldn't trade my '70s Yamaha SA 800 for any 335.
The Japanese had the edge over Gibson from the '70s on, better quality build, better value.

| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 11/4/2006 2:29:47 AM | i play a 72 telecaster deluxe.. sure it's the reissue, but it sounds just as good as my friends which is an actual 72, and i've also got a Fender STARcaster.. not a strat.. a starcaster which is from the 70's. not sure exactly when.
frankly, i dislike playing any guitar other than telecasters.
|
| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 11/4/2006 2:32:30 AM | with the rest of the gear being...
a Deville 2x10 amp, line6 delay modler, tu2 tuner, amp distortion as well as TubeKing over drive, microamp over drive, danecho delay, and some unknown wah pedal that i hardly use

welcome,ya I get lots of requests for building teles
I am more of a strat guy cause of the contours but I think teles look pretty cool

| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 11/4/2006 7:07:41 PM | Hey Guitarman,
I was wondering if you could recommend some effects pedals for me,as I'm looking for some new sounds. I play mostly metal stuff-solos etc. My gear is:a strat copy w. a humbucker and two single coils, a Schecter Omen-6 Diamond Series w. double humbuckers and a Marshall MG-15 amp.
I was thinking of picking up an Alessis effects processor...your thoughts?
