| The guitar player's thread Posted: 3/25/2007 1:16:28 PM | Guitarman, I read in another thread you build guitars. Very cool. I'm just about finished my first project. Bolt on; nothing super challenging like a neck though, but it's a start.
It's a wimbledon white(Mustang gt350 colour) strat with a mighty mite birdseye/ ebony/ abalone dot neck. Went for the "closet classic" look. No beat up body, but I ambered up the maple on the neck before I hit it with the nitro.
I shaped the back of the neck to resemble a shallow V..or more accurately resemble the neck profile of my buddies 57 esquire which after 50 years of wear has the most awesome comfortably played in neck profile. Can't wait to get it done! Just waiting for the staggerred vintage tuners to show up.
So what do you build? Acoustics/ solidbody electrics / carvetops?

| The guitar player's thread Posted: 3/25/2007 1:52:12 PM | My setup as been basically the same since around 89.
Various Ibanez RG550's BOSS ME5
Korg DT12 Tuner
Volume pedal
wireless
into either
84 Marshall JCM800 100W 212 cab
or
Marshall JMP 50W 410 cab
Happy with the sound. Just bought various guitars I think i have like 15 or 16. Was in cover bands for ages back in they day. Though I usually kept to 2 sounds. Dirty and Clean. But MY sounds. Our other guitarist was constantly tapdancing around his pedal board for each freakin song.
I'm like
clean
dirty
lets do it. :)
will have some vids from back in the day up soon!

| The guitar player's thread Posted: 3/25/2007 8:13:20 PM | nice! I like how they play and they all feel pretty much the same. that way if I broke a string, I would just grab another. Usually 3 guitars at gigs. Main one, spare and one tuned to drop-D (you know floyds)
Again I was never one for botique guitars, these all played well, about 1mm string height at the 12th fret. Never worried if some dumbass threw a beerbottle at you, or if it fell off the stand.
:) tools, like a hammer for a carpenter. If I wanted art I would buy a painting :)
The ibanez's are 3 RG550's RG750 and an RG570 I believe I have a red RG 570 (HSS) and I have a line on a black RG550 for cheap. The acoustic electrics are all Kramer Ferringtons. the tobacco sunburst is a ferrington 12 string, the doubleneck is a Kramer something or other. and a Gibson Reverse Firebird and a classical :)

all of my main axes are just beaten and ugly, just the way I like them I hate seeing a 'guitar player' get all 'fuddy duddy' around their axe like some finicky grandma around her old china tea cups

| The guitar player's thread Posted: 3/25/2007 8:47:30 PM | | I mean I dont go out of the way to abuse them but I'm not gonig to cry over a scratch. Gives them soul. Not sure if I'm down with the whole relic thing or not. I mean my pink ibanez is my main one and 20 years old and it doesnt look like a relic :) | |

check your pots....are they -audio -or linear taper? Bill says audio, pretty sure the sticker on the package read audio....maybe All Parts screwed up?
only other possibility i can think of is the wiring I used was quite a bit thicker gauge than the pickup wire...but I don't really see how that would make a difference....
maybe I'll swap the volume & tone pots....

I am not sure,I don't think it is the thicker wire try swapping the pots
boredMOO I have a formerly pink Ibanez too it was stripped down to the wood,it looks like a nuno bettencourt style now with a maple neck ________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________

| The guitar player's thread Posted: 3/26/2007 6:18:04 AM | ok, so I finally decided to take off the crappy paint job the previous owner did on my black Kramer Focus. Started sanding yesterday after disassembly, and discovered he painted OVER the original finish. omfg is this thing a nightmare to sand off, the original paint is so thick and hard on this guitar.....but I'm getting there. thinking about doing a nice amber/orange stain and clear coat (basically make it look like an old antique plank of wood with a floyd rose).

I'll post "after" pics when she's done.
before I get another stupid idea, would it be bad to sand off the headstock to match it to the body stain I'm doing? or should I just leave the black headstock as is?

welcome to the world of refinishing guitars,it is really hard work I would leave the neck with the kramer logo on it,it may be worth more if you were to part out the guitar. If it is just a player guitar for you,do what you think will look good. The headstock may have a black plastic laminate under the logo,I am not sure though
|
| The guitar player's thread Posted: 3/26/2007 1:52:16 PM | Himi,
If you're not concerned with parting it out, and you're detemined to go down to the wood, you could always get a logo made, or just print one on a sheet of peel n stick transparent plastic with your bubblejet. Worked for me.
Check these two out: http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t166/Padraig47/Guitar%20Stuff/Headstockfrt.jpg http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t166/Padraig47/Guitar%20Stuff/Headstockbk.jpg My only challenge when lacquering over it was to super lightly "dust" on the first two or three coats so not to melt the print off the labels. Worked out pretty good.
And now for something a lot more **stardized. Remember Cheech n Chong movies? My friend put new rear view mirrors on his wife's bike, and we got into a box of beer one time when I had my old beater bass at his place. This is what the end result was:

It's perfect too lol you can watch the drummer for the changes!

| The guitar player's thread Posted: 3/26/2007 5:28:40 PM | Here's a link to a tutorial that'll show you everything you need to know about getting a nice clearcoat finish.
http://www.stewmac.com/tradesecrets/bridge_body/electric/tsblueguitar/blue_guitar01.html If you want the grain to stand out, use a dark brown stain first, and then sand most of it off. The dark part of the grain will retain some of the dark stain; then you can use your amber over that. Very effective.
Hope this helps | |
|
| The guitar player's thread Posted: 3/28/2007 3:53:20 AM | | Yeah, I think i'll leave the headstock face alone, however, i'm going to match the back of the neck to the body of the guitar. I don't like the sticky finish on the back, so I think it'll look great with a matching neck in the back with all the black hardware on the guitar. | |

| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 4/2/2007 12:00:05 AM | Hi I bought the little 700B Gallien Kruger, 2/10"'s /horn. Great little amp but 75lbs!! glad for the wheels but warning..., they don't do concrete well. Mine wore down significantly after a few gigs. I 've had my 1984 Fender Jazz bass since it was new. It's like part of me now. | |

(changed my name)
how was the wood underneath. I have one I want to strip but I'm afraid the grain will be totally off or it will be glued together in a weird spot...

Absolutely. I love seeing all the tiny scratches and marks on my guitars. Tell stories really. I keep my guitar clean, but far from the perfect NOS condition some guys pride themselves on.

most of the ibanez rgs/ jems are basswood which is pretty uniform in color with little or no visible grain pattern....... they are pretty uniform..........usually,yours might not be like that

| The guitar player's thread Posted: 4/6/2007 12:11:21 PM | 'allo gents,
I've got a cheap Washburn I got at Target. Naturally, I think the innards are made out of tinfoil. They're already corroding, looks like.
Can I take this thing to a shop and have the pickups, etc. replaced with stuff that won't rot in a week, or is it not worth the expense?
FWIW, it's not my main guitar anymore (see previous post about the new Epiphone), but I'm just curious.

| The guitar player's thread Posted: 4/6/2007 2:49:24 PM | wonkabar
just make sure the target guitar is stable IE cheap guitars tend to not be dryed properly at the shop let it sit in your climate a good 2 yrs,if it did not freak out and twist call your local guitar shop and let them have a look

| The guitar player's thread Posted: 4/6/2007 5:25:20 PM | hey guys i was wondering if you wouldn't mind checkin out somethin i recording the other night... http://www.wikiupload.com/download_page.php?id=120412 (just click on download file and type in the little code, it should play in your browser) The solo guitar overtop is all done off the top of my head, first time. i was just going with the flow as best i could. I've had a guitar for years and years but i've only been seriously playing and learning guitar for about a year now so go easy! I'm aware it's not perfect, i'm just interested in what other people think so far... Style? Thanks a bunch! | |

| The guitar player's thread Posted: 4/6/2007 9:04:09 PM | G-MAN...could you explain to what "fretting out" is... on my tele the strings go"dead" the further down the neck i go.........any suggestions.........thanks....... DOG | |
|
| The guitar player's thread Posted: 4/6/2007 9:36:19 PM | fretting out- is when the frets are to high to let the string vibration occur uninhibited -it could be caused by a high fret,or group of frets OR on early fenders with a fretboard radius of less than 10,simple doing blues bends can cause 'fretting out' because you are bending the string into the center of the neck which is higher than the sides
ITSmedog-when you say 'go down the neck -what do you mean ? poitch wise toward the nut/ toward the bridge?
|
| The guitar player's thread Posted: 4/7/2007 6:47:04 AM | g-man...when i go towards the bridge...the strings do nothing...each string has a different fret that they go "dead" at... | |
