I checked out the Rock Shop today and was quite impressed by the size and orderliness of it-the owner was really cool too! (by the Superstore in the west end-Stony Plain road and 175 st.) Give this dude some business everyone!
Anyhoo, checked out the Peavey 60 tube amp-holy,this thing smokes! I also like the Roland Cube 60...decisions,decisions.

it's how you can "feel" the sound or tone and how you harness it.
biggest factor is the amp....let's hear you sound great outa a shit SS amp....a 4,000 dollar guitar will sound like shit outa a bad amp....
...if a player can't play...can't blame it on an expensive guitar.....fact of the matter is....techs aside...expensive guitars are USUALLY set up way better and play better.....
...guitar processor??? ....geeeez now I'd REALLY love to hear how your tone sounds....
I'd agree it's not wise to spend loads of money...but buying a cheap axe and raising the pickups as high as they will go doesn't seem like the best idea to me....
3 things...amp, woods, and pickups...some cheap axes have good solid bodies...other than that....you just need someone who can set it up pro....

Unless they're Lace, ... which can go as close as possible (without bottoming out the string)

A good amp can make a shit guitar sound better A good amp can make a great guitar sound awesome A crap amp makes everything sound like ass

I just picked up an esp ltd ex 350 and Its The Shi&^%$! Set neck, emg's and a floyd. Runnin' through a flextone II head with marshall 8100 into 4x12! awesome metal tones.
Should I spend the 2oo$ for emg 81/85 setup? or keep the emg hz's?

| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 7/2/2007 2:20:24 AM | new gear news !!! fender eddie van halen AMP is out !!! 5150 III
http://www.evhgear.com/
here is the pdf specs http://www.instituteofnoise.com/L6/files/EVH_5150_III_PRP.pdf
here is some early web reviews........(I have not tried one yet)
To my surprise I walked into the Guitar Center in San Antonio, TX and they had the 5150 III. So of course I tried it out. My first impression (and this was done over my lunch break) was that it had a lot of bottom end and it cleaned up very nice using the volume knob.
The first channel I was able to get some classic VH sounds but it still sounded different which I figured was the tubes (not Marshall--y like the plexi). The second channel was very close to the VH sound of the 90's. The Third channel was very....heavey and plenty of distortion to make the nu-metal kids happy.
With just short amount of time I had with the amp I would say the first two channels would be my rhythm and the third channel would be my solo as it sustains for days.
The best thing I loved about the amp was the distortion. It was tight and not harsh like the 5150's. There was no amp noise and the sound would mimic your guitar playing clearly. The pic attack was quick and smooth. The biggest complaint I had about the amp was the price $1999.00. I also don't like the white panel but hey for me it's either a gold or silver panel (Marshall or 5150). It will take some getting use to.
My ears tell me this amp is going to sell a lot and will start to make it's way into the public and pros very soon. Much better than I expected and compared to the 5150's the new EVH amp is better in all areas except price.
The construction was also impressive. It appears to be well made and the other surprise was the on and stand by switches are in the back.
I won't put my Marshall away anytime soon but it will make it's way into my hands at some point.
Highly Recommended.
can't post a real comprehensive review, but I can say that is was absolutely fantastic.
Of course the 1st thing the sales guy did was put it on the 3rd channel with the gain cranked. Wow, pure high gain madness. We used a EB Luke with EMG's and a EB Petrucci model. The EVH had tons of sustain while retaining clarity. It's a pretty bright channel with lots of low end chunk. Surprisingly it had a very nice midrange character to it. This channel is great for solo's but it had a bit too much gain for my tastes for chording. Metal riffers will dig it.
We then went to the crunch channel. Very nice FAT tone, All the way from AC/DC type crunch to 80's type brown sound. I would spend most of my time on that channel. Both of these channels sounded HUGE. And believe me I cranked that thing up halfway. It was loud as hell!
By the way, we were running it through the 5150 III 4x12 cab.
On to the clean channel. This was the big surprise. It didn't suck! It actually sounded fantastic. By far the best clean I've ever heard on a modern high gain head. I imagine with some delay or reverb it would really shine. The only single coil we had was the neck position on the LUKE guitar. It was an EMG. I would have really liked to play a Strat with some real single coils to get a richer tone.
I was blown away at the character and warmth of the 1st and 2nd channels. Of course when you rachet up the gain on the 3rd channel it turns into a metal machine, which I don't care for, but the amp really seams to cover all the bases and there's something in there for everybody.
I got the exact opposite feeling playing this amp as I got with the new Marshalls. We literally plugged in the guitar and turned up the volumes and it sounded great. No fiddling around spending hours dialing in a sound. It was right THERE.
I wish I had $2000 to spend on an amp right now. I would have bought it on the spot.

| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 7/3/2007 3:36:15 AM | Hey i see peopelposting links to thier gear.. Tho I am a guitarist at heart i still have keys and rack synths that i use for recording my music. I have a small but yet functional midi/digital studio in my living room!
http://www.videogameconnection.com/dogrox/NEW-STUDIO-PIC.jpg
Some things have changed tho since that pic was taken. My white charvel is NOW gone. Long story about that one . It is a sad reminder to never trust anyone. But aside from that, some thigns you dont see in the picture that i still have that are packed in the bedroom cause i dont use them now since i dont do live acts anymore. but i have 2 PEAVEY 3 WAY cabs. and also 2 Traynor cabs packed in the bedroom.. i also have a yamaha dx-7 packed away too since my korgx3 took its place on my stand.
I have a Peavey 8.5c power amp that i bought brand new when they first came out. i only used it like 2-3 times and that was it heheh!.. sad.. i know.. but i am not going to get rid of it.. and as well as a whole stage lightening system! :O)
also NOT in the pic of my studio is NOW i have a personally upgraded HP computer running XP that i use for all my audio and music work. as well as graphic work too!. i use it for all my direct to HDD digital recording.
i have a close up pic of the rack too as well. it will give you an idea whats in it.. and nothing has changed in that at all since the pic was taken, it is still as it is.
http://www.videogameconnection.com/dogrox/My-RACK.jpg You can see most iof the units are rack synths and midi stuff. But the Yamaha and Peavey effects racks i use d to use for vocals and drum effects.. but now since i use digital DXI and VST synths all my effects are done on the computer!
The digitech on top of the rack is an Rp-12 ( i bought brand new when it first came out ) hehe and the one under the key board stand is an RP-1 which was an older one i picked up from an old freind. They are ok but not as good as old BOSS stompboxes in my opinion!
I am influenced by the classic rockers.. But mostly my main influence is PINK FLOYD! I am working on an orginal cd project now that has been in the works for like 10 years heheh.. it is hard when i cant find a good female singer at all in this small town USA!! :(
oh well i know it is just a penny for your thoughts and i am am adding my two cents.. so someone is making a penny off me! heheh!
Cheerz

| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 7/10/2007 7:59:56 PM | Wow a guitar thread, just what I was looking for.
I have a question for you guitar players, I have 19 guitars and always look for more interesting guitars. One day I walked into a pond shop and tried this guitar called Liberatore and loved it so much that I purchased it. It was expensive but it had good hardware so it was worth the money for me, had good EMG pick ups and original Floyd Rose tremolo. So I purchased it but now I can’t play without it and wanted to get another one for back up for when I play my live shows but can’t find any in the music stores. I tried looking in the net but found some guy in Winnipeg but it’s not the same guy. Does anyone here know where I can get a Liberatore guitar?

| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 7/10/2007 8:16:18 PM | hey scatterbrain I have not heard of Liberatore even if you found another it might be very different than your current one....... my advice is to have a guitar builder take measurements of your existing Liberatore and build you a backup | |
|
| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 8/15/2007 9:01:56 PM | The guitar player of Denis DeYoung of Styx plays a Liberatore, you can check his myspace dot com/StephaneDufour, this guy rips that guitar, he’s up there.
Check him out. | |

| The guitar player's [GEAR] thread Posted: 8/16/2007 4:24:12 AM | | I suffer badly from G.A.S., have 23 guitars, 8 Marshall heads, 7 4x12 cabinets, couple of JCM combos......and a Fender Twin, plus various rack stuff, odds and ends (It helps working in the industry!) I actually collect JCM Jubilee stuff, so if anyone has any to off-load.....I'm yer man! | |
|
| The guitar player's [GEAR] thread Posted: 8/16/2007 11:44:08 AM | Rsmacker you got me beat ! I suffer from G.A.S. too....11 guitars, 2 PA's, 2 cheesy amps, 2 processors for the cheesy amps, a dulcimer and a mandolin....some where behind the couch there's a keyboard...I keep lugging around this old Fender Dual Showman head...one of these days Im gonna buy the cabinet and get me some tubes....!!
Dont own it but would love to play a Les Paul thru a Messa Boogie Tweed. Last gig I played my buddy's Les Paul at....I lost feeling in my shoulder, thats the heaviest guitar I have ever played.......thought my arm was gonna fall off before the last set was done.......but man, that neck was beautiful.

| The guitar player's [GEAR] thread Posted: 8/16/2007 2:18:51 PM | Has anyone heard of or played thru the Lee Jackson designed Ampeg VL series amps? I have the Ampeg VL 502 head running thru a Marshall 1960A cab. and I just love it. I'll never get rid of it. Just wish I had the matching cab to go with it. Maybe someday. These amps are getting hard to find, but if you do, they go for less than half the price of a JCM 800. These amps are loaded with features. Besides the dual channels and dual reverbs, they also have a tube driven effects loop, built in power attenuator and a 5 way mid frequency shift knob. It is also biased for both EL34 and 6550 power tubes.
guitarman, have you ever played thru one of these before? What are your thoughts on these amps? Anyone?

| The guitar player's [GEAR] thread Posted: 8/16/2007 8:07:39 PM | coldgin I played on in the store when they were new..................like 15 yrs ago I liked it then it was cool -the feature that I thought was original was the 'freezer key' to stop would be drunk jammers from playing your amp................awesome idea | |

| The guitar player's [GEAR] thread Posted: 8/16/2007 10:18:09 PM | well....it's been a while...been a good boy and stayin' away from the temptations....BUT buddy just picked up an Akai Head Rush pedal and had to put a plug in for it....it's pretty cool...perfect for the psychadelic jams....
...and it adds a whole new element for developing a groove with just a 3 piece jam....the tone is perfect...doesn't distort or color it in any way....and dead quiet....I can't wait to get a couple more jams in with that thing....it's gonna be sick!!!!

| The guitar player's [GEAR] thread Posted: 8/19/2007 3:58:37 PM | I'm just getting going in my world of acquisitions. About four and a half years ago I was given a Fender basic acoustic. It was somewhat naff so I can't even remember what model and I hardly used it.
Three and a half years ago I acquired my Dad's unused 70s Eko Ranger 6. Big heavy lump but the first guitar I could play properly. A year and a half ago I decided to try electric so bought myself a Gibson SG Special and then proceeded to not really use it.
Half a year ago I picked up a new Takamine TAN10C with CTP1 preamp and I think I've come on massively this year. So much so that in the last few months I've bought myself a Takamine G Series 12 string and the other week I got a Digitech GNX4 effects board and started using the Gibson.
I'm now looking at bass guitars and completely avoiding looking at anything else in the guitar shops as that would mean that I'd have to start pilfering my business funds [img]http://img228.exs.cx/img228/638/whistle9qn.gif[/img]
I'm going to need to buy two semi-detached houses with one just for music stuff :)
