yes the jsx is nice......I worked at a peavey dealer for awhile and got a good price on a new head.........I tried 3 jsx heads, xxx and a 6505+ I got the 6505+........it just had that nice sizzle though I kinda planned on getting a jsx too later........now I am not working for those peavey guys anymore though (your question)---maybe turn down the noise gate threshold? what kinda guitar are you playing with that?
Mesa stillettos are nice too try lots of amps is the key,get one with an efx loop the sound you are looking for can be gotten with guitar with humbucker-compressor pedal-hi gain tube amp-efx loop out -noise gate-delay-reverb-efx loop in-power amp--2x12 or 4x12 cabinet

| The guitar player's [GEAR] thread Posted: 11/26/2007 5:54:58 PM | | Does anyone have any info on minimizing feedback from my Tele.Seems when I am playing and hit overdrive I get squeals like crazy. Also I just purchased a 91 ephiphone les paul custom and the pickups have way lots of output,I would like to get a more subtle sound, any suggestions on pickups Thanks | |

| The guitar player's [GEAR] thread Posted: 11/27/2007 7:25:47 PM | Is it a Fender Tele, or a Squier Tele??
A friend bought a Squier Strat and brought it to my place for me to try out and compare to my real Fenders. I played my Fender Strat thru the amp and it sounded fine, and when I plugged his Squier in, it squealed at the same settings. Seems the Squiers utilise cheaper pickups which causes microphonic feedback.

on the tele pickups...................they need to be dipped in wax to remove squeal
0n the epiphone--try a seymour duncan 59' ,or jazz' or dimarzio paf _________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________

| The guitar player's [GEAR] thread Posted: 11/28/2007 8:31:18 AM | | Thanks alot for your feedback,so dipping the pickups in wax will reduce pickup squeal, will it affect the tone very much? | |

| The guitar player's [GEAR] thread Posted: 11/29/2007 8:59:33 PM | | Holy smoke there's a lot of posts in this thread! No way I'm reading them all hah! Anyway, been playing for the last... 36 years. Worked in music stores the last... 32 years. Owned my own shop for a while, still wheel and deal on the used/vintage market. Still playing out some, most of the time with my Strat and LP and a Fender Vibrolux Reverb and a few old pedals. | |

| The guitar player's [GEAR] thread Posted: 11/30/2007 9:08:45 PM | | Hey I got a simple question..anyone know any chords that arent used often....good ones i mean...I know tons but I feel like im playin the same shit over and over again | |
|
| The guitar player's [GEAR] thread Posted: 11/30/2007 10:35:16 PM | JSX has an effects loop.. yeah I'd heard about 6505's but I haven't had a chance to try one. Cool thing, the effects bypass works as a volume boost when nothing's in it(effects out/in separate volume knobs on the back to adjust), it's like suddenly I have 6 channels! I don't use the noise gate at all, I just keep the gain a certain level, which is plenty enough for me... the gain on the ultra channel seems to start at 4-5 where the crunch channel ends at 10, it's almost sick. Usually I go straight to 10, this is a treat for me. Excellent long spring reverb too but I don't turn it up full, I'm sparse on effects and prefer the least amount between my amp and guitar as possible, seems to null the tone too much and lose dynamics in between.
I'm playing a pre-1986 (can tell because of the Kahler on it) Charvel custom shop neckthrough with a couple active Jackson's on it, custom scalloped fretboard on the high end, sustain for days but the previous owner did a home job on the finish I'm planning on redoing. It's one of the needs-TLC cases.
Since posting I've really had some time to put into the EQ, I'm pretty happy with it but as with most new gear I'm still feeling it out. One thing I've really noticed is how quiet even high gain settings are at volume, I doubt I'll regret this.

| The guitar player's [GEAR] thread Posted: 12/1/2007 11:49:08 AM | I'd say, make your own.
Pick a type you like the sound of... myself, I like dimished/suspended types. You can sit and take ones you already know and figure out the math of the intervals between notes that construct them, then pick a root note elsewhere and 'construct' it from there. Even better, pick a note somewhere you wouldn't usually start a chord from (say the first 2-3 lowest strings being normal... try the g string higher up) and make the fact the chord is in a 'weird' place work for you instead of against in that you'll end up with something most people don't use. Position doesn't just affect the fingering, it affects the tonality of the chord too. Throwing in open strings when you can can really punch up a chord too, but open strings tend to dominate fretted ones depending on how you mute and play so they're hard to find a set way to use them effectively.
If you're pushing your limits and your fingers get sore, you're probably headed in the right direction :)

| The guitar player's [GEAR] thread Posted: 12/20/2007 11:01:18 PM | I stumbled upon an interesting acoustic guitar manufacturer today....
Garrison guitars...made in Newfoundland I believe...they got a wild bracing system that apparently allows the guitar to resonate evenly... ALL solid wood construction...I'd like to hear one for myself...but they don't list any Canadian dealers on their site....strange...
check em out...COOL...

| The guitar player's [GEAR] thread Posted: 12/21/2007 12:02:43 AM | Oh man, I love my guitars! My main guitar that I reherse with is an Epiphone Les Paul Goth. I love the sound AND I love the look. My favorite guitar that I own (and in existience) is my Gibson Les Paul Voodoo. What a thing of BEAUTY! I find the Epiphone much easier to play, though. But neither guitar has the really fast standard fret board. :S Both feel almost like acoustic guitars. I have a bunch of other guitars as well, but those are definitely my favs.
My amp is a Fender Ultimate Chorus, which I like, but it sounds far better at low volume than it does when it's cranked. It needs to be replaced by a Marshall Stack. Or maybe an Orange. I'm really not sure. I think I want one that goes to 11. lol! I play a LOT of different styles so I want something versitile. That's my main concern. Hmmm...

| The guitar player's [GEAR] thread Posted: 12/24/2007 3:53:53 AM | One thing I see from reading through this is most people are very electric orientated!
I do have a Gibson SG and Digitech GNX4 but I don't tend to play it that often.
Christmas 4 years ago I was given a cheapo Fender acoustic. Never really played the guitar before then. Didn't get too much progress that year either. The next year I pinched my Dad's 1970s Eko Ranger 6. Big chunk bugger with strings that might not have been changed since the 80s (the wrapping on the bass strings was coming off!) but I could actually play it.
The christmas before last I bought the SG, but this year I have bought my favorite guitar - a Takamine TAN10C with cooltube preamp. The first acoustic I picked up when looking for a new one. I went round and tries all sorts from cheap things up to a £2500 Martin but nothing felt as good as this. It was a good choice :)
Since then I have also bought a Takamine G series 12 string and an Ibanez bass (with 300W ashdown amp :) )
I've been writing and recording my own stuff but need people better with lyrics and singing!

I have seen biasing being done and it has been explained to me too,you need a bit of gear to do it right plus a voltage chart.........I would call the techs in your city and just get them to do it.....if you are advenurous there is a 'biasing video' on the "eurotube " site

| The guitar player's [GEAR] thread Posted: 12/26/2007 8:00:13 PM | As of late, my gear is this:
1. Fender G-DEC Amplifier 2. Fender G-Dec Executive Amplifier 3. 2003 Gibson SG Special (Red Wine color)

| The guitar player's [GEAR] thread Posted: 12/27/2007 8:37:30 PM | My gear: 2005ish Epiphone Studio DOT (335 copy?). 70s Bassman 50 w/overdrive circuit someone installed, constantly giving me issues. Looks like the transformer could be bad, or a simple cap. Haven't bothered to take it in since I don't have cabinet right now (was a Randall 4x12" celestion cab) Ibanez Tube Screamer
Nothing fancy and nothing I'll be too upset over if it gets soaked in beer, dropped, smashed, or burned.

congrads!!!! I am getting into more bluesy tones again fender twins have a nice clean ---6l6 power tubes tend to have an extended range (lower lows and higher highs) more sparkle yes tubes are the way to go---I am thinking we should make this thread a " line 6 free zone" for 2008 !
|
| The guitar player's thread Posted: 12/28/2007 6:38:53 PM | LOL.. line 6 free zone...
So true, I'm converted (tube tone) and finally I'm not banging my head against the walls micro tweaking EQ to try to get a full sound. Just happens all by itself now :)
|
| The guitar player's thread Posted: 12/30/2007 6:41:04 PM | ...... I'm with ya' brother on the Line 6 free zone !!....... and yes those Fender twins sing very nicely....i noticed one of my favorite players...Eric Johnson plays through a pair of Fender combos ... on another topic... does anyone have a comment on the JTM 60 ?.... I want to buy another Marshall combo ( currently have an old JCM 800 4210) but have never heard the JTM 60..... | |
