re: the jtm60
I have very little experience with these but I remember them being from the early 90's
kinda was marketed as a 'value priced marshall'
they don't sell for much on ebay---your jcm 800 is better combo buildwise-and more desirable.............

I would suggest something with 6l6 tubes they have a nicer extended range highs and lows---bigger low end bloom too

maybe consider a used mesa boogie for a nice fender /marshall blend
also there a lots of nice 'boutique 18 watters' out there too

It won't affect the tone, all 'potting' does is prevent the wires in the pickup from vibrating along with the guitar I believe, which is what's causing the squeal.

Very helpful process to know about if you're interested in modding pickups ;)

Hey guys,

It's been awhile since I've posted here. I've finally settled on a tube amp-it's a 40 watt,Peavey XXX combo- def. built for metal! Still trying to dial in a tone though. Anyways,I've got a couple questions: there is a damping switch on the back with three options-loose,mid and tight. Is there an optimal position for this switch-or is it purely to ones taste? Secondly, this is my first amp with an effects loop on it. What is the correct proceedure for plugging in? I thought it was a no-brainer until the resulting feedback almost made my ears bleed. LOL

Any/all advice and tips will be greatly appreciated! Oh,my effects unit is a Zoom G2.

Thanks in advance

hey dark f

RE:
there is a damping switch on the back with three options-loose,mid and tight

this is purely a personal preference setting, when you are jamming with a band and a you have the amp cranked sometimes it can get 'farty in the low end' -switching to mid or tight might help

RE: efx loop-
plug in like this

guitar------>xxx front input------efx send on back of amp------>zoom in-----zoom out----->efx return

start with a clean patch on the zoom.........no distortion
just delay and reverb

Thanks for the reply dude-I appreciate the time you and others spend answering dumb-ass questions!

What are your thoughts on attenuators? I was thinking of ordering a Dr.Z Airbrake as I can't really turn my amp past 1 and I'm guessing that this amp will really growl with the tubes pushed (three-12AX7 preamp tubes &two-EL34's...I took out the 6L6GC's).

Thanks!

Pretty sweet setup. I use a Jackson DXMG Dinky with a small 120watt Peavey amp. Same metal zone pedal. but i started messing around with my amp to get my distortion.

I use a Toneport for recording. I would recommend a Mbox, you can get one off of Musician's Friend website thats a Mbox 2 Mini that's $295 comes packaged with ProTools LE.

I don't understand the big fuss about protools...what's the difference between pro tools and cubase? i mean they both do the same thing dont they? record music...lol.

The firebox is goin for 299 + a free condenser mic that's 250 bucks, sampletank and a buncha free drum loops. that's why i'm thinkin firebawks.

There's no concensus among techs on whether these kill amps or not, but a lot of guys call them "tranny toasters" for a reason, you are running the amp full out and putting on the "brakes"(they ALL colour your tone too).

"functional as having put training wheels on a top fuel dragster to slow it down till you get the feel of the thing on city streets to go food shopping and not wake sleeping dogs whose bark will be louder than that dragster's newly tuned exhaust pipe's wimpy sounding tone.''

- Rich Koerner

My thoughts?

Your amp is too powerful, try an amp that's half as loud and work your way up.
(this means if it's 100w, try a 10 watt amp dimed, "watts" are exponential when it comes to "loudness", a 50w amp is only 3 less db)

How's this for heavy sounding?

http://homepage.mac.com/ewald/.Music/Escape_From_Planet_POF.mp3

...that's a 1/3 watt class A amp.

and I'm guessing that this amp will really growl with the tubes pushed (three-12AX7 preamp tubes &two-EL34's...I took out the 6L6GC's).

Hmmm... I hope you re-biased and check the pin-outs on the schematic so you aren't crossing wires, the 6L6 and EL34 have different pin-outs on the socket. Some amps can take the swap, ...some no like.

I don't know really. Just that my friend loves pro-tools when he records his guitar and uses Addictive Drums for his drum tracks.

I'll have to look into Firebox. I want to try out cubase but for now I'm using audacity.

Now that's a great way to step down the output level of an amp if you want to run the amp full out.

Basically it's a 12 pin tube socket glued onto a 6L6/EL34 base, inside the base are wires to change the pin-out and a small circuit to change the grid-bias to suit the EL84.

Make sure you get the right adaptor for the tube type specified in the amp (or one that it may be modded to).

If it's a pair of 6L6's @ 40 watts - 50 watts, expect about 8-15 watts output, ....this makes for a great sweet-spot in regards to harmonically rich output tube saturation and amplitude (loudness). Don't let the 8-15 watts scare you away, it's plenty loud, and there's an advantage to getting the "tone" you seek at a lower amplitude if you're mic'ing the amp; as the diaphram on any mic is subject to less "warp", ....more bandwidth, more signal headroom, ...this is definitely a "less is more" proposition.

I think there are other vendors making similar adaptors, but the Yellowjacket is probably the easiest to find.

EL 84s (the tube that the Yellowjackets work as an "adaptor" for), are a much lower output tube than either a 6L6GT or EL84, with similar tone and output characteristics to the venerable 6V6.

^^^^^^^^^

yes I agree !!!!
I have not got one yet but I will

I have peavey 6505+ which is the 5150 II head -renamed
I find it too loud and barky
I have been experimenting with lower gain 12ax7 style tubes to lower the preamp gain.
I have been able to make the 'clean' channel ' actually sound clean and springy like a fender style channel....I can play srv and funk styles on that channel also the lead channel sound a bit more 'vintage'
I think the thd yellow jackets will be the next step to make that amp more useable
instead of 4 6l6's I will goto 2-thd yellow jackets and half my ohms to compensate for 2 less tubes............does that sound right?

I wondered where this thread went.

Anyway, Santa was nice to me this year and brought me an M-Audio Fast Track Pro USB recording device, also acts as a preamp. I use it for recording with my Line 6 POD XT Live, which honestly sounds better through a PA then it does through and amp, I know because I have tried it.

Last week I picked up a Simon & Patrick acoustic-electric guitar, a Woodland CW Spruce, for 600 bucks, it sounds great, it is laminated but that is ok, because I tend to do damage to my guitars and know acoustics can break easier then electrics. Things are working out with my Ibanez RT650 which you can see here:

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c177/AcousticSmash/IbanezRT650.jpg

Andy Timmons used to play the RT450 which is the model down from mine, his had HSS pickup configuration. Mine also isn't stock as it has a Duncan SH-5 humbucker in the bridge. Personally I liked Andy Timmons tone before he switched over to Mesa Boogie amps, when he was using the RT450 as well, he does not now because Ibanez makes a signature model which is pretty much an expensive version of the RT line.

Hey Guitarman and Late!

Thank you both for your advice-it's awesome that you guys share your technical knowledge with those of us lost in the ever elusive quest for tone! In retrospect, perhaps I should have gone with a lower wattage tube amp or one with variable wattage settings. That being said, I have started to discover dialing in different tones with the amp eq and am thinking maybe trying a BBE Sonic Maximizer & an eq pedal to shape my sound.

I have heard of the Yellowjackets and may look into them, but in the meantime I have switched my power tubes back to the 6L6's as I find them warmer than the EL-34's that I thought I needed. With my Peavey Triple XXX I'm fortunate that it accepts both tubes as it has a bias switch inside.

You know,it's funny-I thought I needed THIS amp which is probably way too loud for what I use it for...and a buddy of mine-who's in a band, has an Orange- Tiny Terror. Perhaps there's a lesson to be learned here!

yes I like 6l6s better than el34's too
yellow jacket might be the ticket
don't be too sad, keep the xxx AND
now you just have an excuse to buy a second amp !!!
It is ok to have more than one amp,oh yes it is ok

Right now I use an Orange tiny terror with 4x12 Legend slant cab. and a vintage Fender Deluxe 73 as my main tools. For fx a line 6 delay, dunlop univibe and vox wah.

Also have a Fender MIM stratocaster and an Ibanez rg550 both have maple fretboards and in great players shape with a few battle scars .

Thanks for the words G-man!

Went to Mothers Music today (great shop!) for more gear. So,this is my current set-up: Schecter Omen 6 with Seymour Duncans-'59 in the neck and a Dimebucker in the bridge,Peavey Triple XXX amp,Zoom effects processor (which I only use for the tuner and a couple effects),Boss Digital Delay DD-3,MXR Phase 90 (block face) BBE Sonic Stomp and finally,a Gator power adaptor.

I might add a couple more pedals, but I'm fairly happy with my tone for the most part. I'm still curious about the Yellowjackets though-those might be next when I pick up a noise gate! LOL
