oh boy ... there's too much gear out there to drool over to narrow it down ... I also suffer from G.A.S *sigh*

but I'd have to say that out of all the guitars and amps I've played there's only one amp that sticks out in my mind . . .the mesa boogie rectifier series . . .it suits my needs soundwise the best, and is simple to boot. I don't need a ditigal amp (but will get one with a headphone jack . . .I am an apartment dweller and a good night with my insturment can mean catching a bit of hell from the landlord) and prefer the one great sound this am makes

as far as guitars . . .there's too many gorgeous sounding ones to pick. so I'll take one of everything . . . that way I don't have to choose. there's so many colours that yo ucan use with different guitars that it's just like using a good pedalboard or rackmount multi effects unit

New Gear......last April I bought an Epiphone Elitist 57 Goldtop. None of the local shops carried them, so I took the Musician's Friend 30 day challenge and ended up with a keeper.

It has a nice dark rosewood fretboard, great pickups, and a superb finish. The only upgrade I foresee are straplocks.

Anyone who is not willing to drop two grand on a Gibson LP Standard should check out the Epi Elitist guitars. And act fast....seems each week they discontinue models and color options. And just when I was hoping to nab a Cherry Es- 335.

Here's an effects question: I've got an MXR Phase 90 in my chain now and it's a cool pedal and all...but,what I'm wondering is,is there a pedal out there that sounds like the Phase 90 without the 'whoosh' effect cause if I could kill that factor-this would be a killer tone!!!

Maybe a mod of some sort?

Fender Deluxe Reverb
Standard American Strat
Volume Set to 8 on Vibrato 2 channel.
Optional Maxon OD808 Overdrive Pedal

Yup, 10 out of 10 sound.

myspace.com/tylerferrari - check the sample soundfile at the bottom. Good for a dollar store mic.

Is there any way to tell which pre-amp tube is blown? I know that it's not the power tubes as I tried replacing those already. I've heard that high gain amps will usually blow the phase inverter first,so I'm thinking of replacing that. Now,there are 4- 12AX7 pre-amp tubes-can I just put any 12AX7 in the phase inverter slot or are there specific tubes for each slot?

I believe it's a blown tube because I get power, but only hear a faint output from my guitar and turning up the volume does squat!

hmmmmm
you just bought that amp...no? (warranty)
next I suggest 'working backwards' as in....
speaker---->poweramp (plug in the fx return, with a line level signal, like a 'walkman headphone feed....make sure the volume is at zero---bring it up slowly)

does that sound loud and clear?
then go further backwards----->plug in the front end which includes the pre amp
you can swap the 12ax7's out --with a know good one---
google
eurotube
he has a good site

Thanks for the Edm. Audio Works tip! I went there, but their hours are extremely limited and not open on weekends. I may need a "sick" day to take my amp in. LOL

@ Guitarman-I know effects orders are purely subjective, but could you recommend the most efficient order for my pedals? My current chain is as follows: Guitar>Distortion>Amp. Then,in the loop:Amp>Phaser>Dig. Delay>10 band eq.>Noise Gate>Amp

Thanks in advance!

hey man yes I can help
try this out
Guitar>Distortion >Phaser(try phaser infront of the distortion and try it after)>Amp.

Then,in the loop:Amp>>10 band eq.>Noise Gate>Dig. Delay(alway place delays and reverbs after the gate so the gate does not cut the delay decay)>Amp

yo G-man....another harsh winter come and gone and I've noticed the frets on mine axe feel REALLY jagged...figured cuz the poor gal is all dried out...is it a good idea to have em filed? or just wait for the muggy summer air to run it's course?

hey man

you should file the frets now when they are sticking out the most, when it gets humid in the summer the neck will expand a bit...but it is no big deal. The main thing is to file them at the driest point in the year when the most shrinkage has happened

Hey guys.....I'm going to possibly open up a big can of worms here.... My neighbor is a musician and seems to think that the old guitar builders eg. Fender, Gibson ... still make the best guitars...I disagree, I think they lost their edge a long long time ago.... mind you some of it is personal taste, and custom shop guitars are probably good, but off the rack guitars are built cheap............ Comments ??

In my personal opinion, the old stand-by's have stuck with what works for them...which is cool and all; however, and again, this is just my opinion, I think companies like Ibanez,Jackson and Schecter (which I have) have totally kept up with current musical styles. That being said, I think one could still buy old school guitars and mod them to sound current!

On an aside, I have been buying and selling chorus pedals like there's no tomorrow, trying to find the ultimate chorus tone. This one is a Maxon CS-9 Pro Stereo Chorus...probably the best one yet in my quest for thick lush tone. It still seems to be lacking though and I'm like-W.T.F? Perhaps G-man or someone who has had this issue could help me out!? So,here's a rundown on my gear again: Schecter Omen 6 with a Dimebucker in the bridge/'59 in the neck into MXR Phase 90>Landmine Distortion>Peavey Triple XXX combo. In the loop: Maxon CS-9 Chorus>MXR 10 band eq>Electro-harmonix HumDebugger>Boss DD-3 Digital Delay>Amp.

Thoughts on this set-up? And,more specifically, are my high gain amp and pickup limiting my chorus pedal capabilities?

Thanks again for any and all help!

I don't think I've ever played a Fender or a Gibson that I've liked. Fenix Fender copies were far superiour, so good Fender closed them down via their lawyers in the 70's or something. I think they still make pianos but not sure. You still see them popping up on Ebay, with that wonderful birdseye pattern. Gordon Smith guitars are also amazing, still going today you will be glad to hear, handmade in the UK, they are quite Gibsonesque but play so amazing you won't believe it and sound a hundred times better. Simon & Patrick make wonderful acoustic guitars for a reasonable price. And yes you guessed it, I have a Fenix and a Simon & Patrick. Sold the Gordon Smith for a nice profit as I found it in a pawn shop and they had no idea of the real value.

Gear I have that is shamefully in storage right now -
Ibanez AD-80, original.
Ibanez SD-9, original.
WEM Dominator Mark III Amp, what a tone!
Sovtek Russian made phaser, built like a tank, sounds amazing.
WEM 16 track analog mixing desk.

Incase you have never heard of WEM check out Pink Floyd's Live at Pompei.

custom stuff is the best because it is tailored to you like a fine suit
the famous players are -getting paid to play a certain brand--it is called
'an endorsment deal'

also the signature models you see on the racks at the stores are not the guitars that the
famous players play-trust me on this one
eg.
clapton and beck have their personal guitars built by one certain custom shop builder
and they are reworked by their personal guitar tech

having so many pedals in your efx loop is a major tone suck...
think of it this way
your tube amp makes this lovely tube distortion--then we put it through 4/5 pedals and then back to the power amp...it is to much

you should be running a parrellel efx loop so it is 95% tube pre-amp goodness to the power amp and only 5% efx added on top.......this will sound more natural and the tone will 'breathe better'

try this

Schecter Omen 6 with a Dimebucker in the bridge/'59 in the neck into MXR Phase 90>Landmine Distortion>Maxon CS-9 Chorus>Peavey Triple XXX combo. In the loop: >(serial loop (100%through the pedal)
MXR 10 band eq(consider pulling the eq out of the loop and put it after the distortion pedal)
>Electro-harmonix HumDebugger>passive signal blender( I sell these)>
----- 95%signal -------------- -power amp
---- 5% signal toBoss DD-3 Digital Delay---to power amp

If it's a vintage bridge...look at Callaham...though it's probably not a be all and end all fix....from what I've heard and experienced myself....a million small tweaks is what's needed with a strat bridge....I know there were a few good points way back in this thread....

Hey G-Man.....What do I use to keep the oiled maple neck on my Wolfgang clean ? (and wont darken the finish)?.....the manual for the guitar mentions nothing regarding that....

Thanks !!

Also I think you're right that all the best players have their guitars custom tweaked ( or fully rodded so to speak)...Its got to be the attention to the small ( but critical) details that make a good guitar into a wicked guitar !!!.....your trade in the guitar business makes you a rare breed..... there arent many guys around doing it these days.....even beginner guitar players should get a deadly set up on their guitar ( or more) ........ I've seen beginner players playing crappy stuff that should be set up properly ( or thrown in the river) but they often dont know any better....Rock and Roll !!
