hey man

you should file the frets now when they are sticking out the most, when it gets humid in the summer the neck will expand a bit...but it is no big deal. The main thing is to file them at the driest point in the year when the most shrinkage has happened

Hey guys.....I'm going to possibly open up a big can of worms here.... My neighbor is a musician and seems to think that the old guitar builders eg. Fender, Gibson ... still make the best guitars...I disagree, I think they lost their edge a long long time ago.... mind you some of it is personal taste, and custom shop guitars are probably good, but off the rack guitars are built cheap............ Comments ??

In my personal opinion, the old stand-by's have stuck with what works for them...which is cool and all; however, and again, this is just my opinion, I think companies like Ibanez,Jackson and Schecter (which I have) have totally kept up with current musical styles. That being said, I think one could still buy old school guitars and mod them to sound current!

On an aside, I have been buying and selling chorus pedals like there's no tomorrow, trying to find the ultimate chorus tone. This one is a Maxon CS-9 Pro Stereo Chorus...probably the best one yet in my quest for thick lush tone. It still seems to be lacking though and I'm like-W.T.F? Perhaps G-man or someone who has had this issue could help me out!? So,here's a rundown on my gear again: Schecter Omen 6 with a Dimebucker in the bridge/'59 in the neck into MXR Phase 90>Landmine Distortion>Peavey Triple XXX combo. In the loop: Maxon CS-9 Chorus>MXR 10 band eq>Electro-harmonix HumDebugger>Boss DD-3 Digital Delay>Amp.

Thoughts on this set-up? And,more specifically, are my high gain amp and pickup limiting my chorus pedal capabilities?

Thanks again for any and all help!

I don't think I've ever played a Fender or a Gibson that I've liked. Fenix Fender copies were far superiour, so good Fender closed them down via their lawyers in the 70's or something. I think they still make pianos but not sure. You still see them popping up on Ebay, with that wonderful birdseye pattern. Gordon Smith guitars are also amazing, still going today you will be glad to hear, handmade in the UK, they are quite Gibsonesque but play so amazing you won't believe it and sound a hundred times better. Simon & Patrick make wonderful acoustic guitars for a reasonable price. And yes you guessed it, I have a Fenix and a Simon & Patrick. Sold the Gordon Smith for a nice profit as I found it in a pawn shop and they had no idea of the real value.

Gear I have that is shamefully in storage right now -
Ibanez AD-80, original.
Ibanez SD-9, original.
WEM Dominator Mark III Amp, what a tone!
Sovtek Russian made phaser, built like a tank, sounds amazing.
WEM 16 track analog mixing desk.

Incase you have never heard of WEM check out Pink Floyd's Live at Pompei.

custom stuff is the best because it is tailored to you like a fine suit
the famous players are -getting paid to play a certain brand--it is called
'an endorsment deal'

also the signature models you see on the racks at the stores are not the guitars that the
famous players play-trust me on this one
eg.
clapton and beck have their personal guitars built by one certain custom shop builder
and they are reworked by their personal guitar tech

having so many pedals in your efx loop is a major tone suck...
think of it this way
your tube amp makes this lovely tube distortion--then we put it through 4/5 pedals and then back to the power amp...it is to much

you should be running a parrellel efx loop so it is 95% tube pre-amp goodness to the power amp and only 5% efx added on top.......this will sound more natural and the tone will 'breathe better'

try this

Schecter Omen 6 with a Dimebucker in the bridge/'59 in the neck into MXR Phase 90>Landmine Distortion>Maxon CS-9 Chorus>Peavey Triple XXX combo. In the loop: >(serial loop (100%through the pedal)
MXR 10 band eq(consider pulling the eq out of the loop and put it after the distortion pedal)
>Electro-harmonix HumDebugger>passive signal blender( I sell these)>
----- 95%signal -------------- -power amp
---- 5% signal toBoss DD-3 Digital Delay---to power amp

If it's a vintage bridge...look at Callaham...though it's probably not a be all and end all fix....from what I've heard and experienced myself....a million small tweaks is what's needed with a strat bridge....I know there were a few good points way back in this thread....

Hey G-Man.....What do I use to keep the oiled maple neck on my Wolfgang clean ? (and wont darken the finish)?.....the manual for the guitar mentions nothing regarding that....

Thanks !!

Also I think you're right that all the best players have their guitars custom tweaked ( or fully rodded so to speak)...Its got to be the attention to the small ( but critical) details that make a good guitar into a wicked guitar !!!.....your trade in the guitar business makes you a rare breed..... there arent many guys around doing it these days.....even beginner guitar players should get a deadly set up on their guitar ( or more) ........ I've seen beginner players playing crappy stuff that should be set up properly ( or thrown in the river) but they often dont know any better....Rock and Roll !!

ouateonetoo

you could try cleaning the neck with "Murphy's soap'
It may work,I have never tried it

I usually leave the grime on the neck -I call it 'road miles'

I light rub with 0000 steel wool can help clean off the 'dead skin lumpy bumpies'

I just bought a Marshall JVM 410H and a 1960Lead Cab. Wow... I've never been so happy in my life! The versatility is amazing, from the cleanest clean tone Marshall has ever produced to the heaviest distortion. And I really like the emulated line out. I have it run into a firewire device and my band records live as we jam, AND IT SOUNDS AWESOME! I highly recommend this beauty.

Amp:Fender Deluxe Reverb 1974 silvertop-freakin beutiful
recently picked up a Digitech RP 350 has a lot of options-replications of 30 effects pedals , replications of classic amps and stacks-some of the stuff sounds plastic but if you learn how to tweak it sounds good , some of the replications are fantastic the FUZZFACE is amazing and wahs are cool....

I've gone from once having loads of guitars, pedals and amps to now owning two classical guitars and ten fingers.

I was hiding my poor playing behind effects and it forced me to improve by ditching all the electrical gear.

Kramer Focus 6000 superstrat - I think it's an 1987 or 88 model. Totally overhauled and rewired with new pots and pickups.

Peavey TransFex Pro 212s combo amp. - Loud, lots of headroom, gives me every sound I need for doing covers with the band I play in.

Yamaha DG-Stomp - my back-up that goes into the PA if my amp fails, also serves as a MIDI footswitcher for changing my presets on the Peavey amp.

Yo on that...I'm not huge into pedals...and my favorite pups are the ones that let the acoustics of the instrument shine through....vintage all the way...I can stand them fancy basses with active pups that just sound like a damn keyboard.....

Finding a distortion pedal that actually sounds good is a f*ckin' chore....

Well, I've had a lot of guitars over the years, but 2 of the the ones I have now are my faves: Acoustic: Fender DG31 black cut-away w/ fishman pickups
Electric: Epiphone Les Paul Custom (black w/ gold pickups)

Didn't feel like lugging around a big heavy amp either, so I picked up a Roland Micro-Cube w/effects. Been very impressed with it.

I also have an Ibanez GRS-200 Roadster Series bass (black) which really does a nice job. It's got this "boom" function on it for those really meaty bass sounds for certain songs, but also has a really nice high end sound for songs that require that. I just record everything direct into Cubase via a Behringer UB1002FX mini-mixer. For acoustic/vocals I use an AKG c1000s condenser.

I hear ya' too !!....... I still love electric guitar but have found that the better my playing skills get , the less stuff I want between my guitar and amp, all I have now is an Ibanez analog delay and an MXR phase 90 into a Marshall JCM 800...after that its all up to me... I've found that "working out" on a steel string acoustic , where you have to work for every note, is a great benefit to strengthen my playing skills....theres all kinds of cool flat picking stuff out there from bluegrass to gypsy jazz etc...
