| The guitar player's thread Posted: 6/6/2008 11:21:47 PM | | Yeah, you may be right. I don't mind that the pickups are expensive...this is just something I intend to do for fun and am in no hurry for it. As for the bass, yeah I may not go with a bargain bin axe, I just didn't want to invest in something that already had cool pickups (like a G & L) and then take the hatchet to it. Maybe a Fender Jazz copy or sumpin'. | |

| The guitar player's thread Posted: 6/7/2008 4:58:32 PM | So,I bought a Marshall 1936 Vintage 2X12 cabinet (head to come later). On my Peavey Triple XXX combo it has a 16 ohm external speaker outlet and my cab has an 8 ohm mono input and a 16 ohm stereo input. I know I have to plug into the stereo input, except there's two. Will it still work? I don't want to turn on my amp and risk blowing my amp or speakers or something.
Guitarman? Late? Anyone? | |

you can go in the stereo input on the marshall cabinet ...that will only power one of the speakers in the marshall.....on the back of the marshall cab there is 2 ---16 ohm inputs (left / right)......you will power one of them
you could also disconnect your peavey xxx speakers ....and take the speaker out feed straight to the marshall cabinet.......that will work nice if you can have an 8 ohm output from the peavey xxx | |

Thanks for the advice as always! Any idea where I can find a Rivera Knucklehead? I tried the Mecca (Avenue Guitars) but no luck. They do have some Engl's (which I'm considering) and a Marshall TSL 60 head...I really want a Rivera though! | |

| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 6/23/2008 12:31:16 PM | I guess the best advice I can offer on getting an amp is: -bring your own guitar--try lots of amps -make sure it sounds good AND 'feels good'' -a good amp will make guitar play easier and more fun -getting a tone should be easy -i.e. you should be able to just plug in with a cord and get a great tone if you have to put an eq in the effects loop to 'chased down a skanky sounding mid frequency' then you should find a different amp - make sure the controls are layed out in an easy to understand method (mesa boogie triaxis and mark IV-----lose marks on this criteria) -make sure the gain structure is right for your style,do not realy on needing a pedal to get the grind you are looking for
-spend a little more money than you thought --speakers are a HUGE part of the tone equation-make this an equal part of your search -understand the sound difference between 1x12,2x12,4x12----open back closed back
-DO NOT really on 'you tube' demos of amps-try them for real -only spend money on tube amps........period digital modellers are fun toys but like computers they never hold their resale value and are generally not very satisfying after awhile-kinda like diet coke -do you need only 3 good sounds or do you need presets and advanced switching?
recommendations as of june 2008 -I have not played may amps in the stores lately,I did try 3 mesa combos -lonestar-nice but not enough gain -Mark IV nice mid,but not easy to navigate
-stiletto---I like this one, nice variety of tones, lots of gain if you want it.it is better voiced than my peavey 6505II-the stiletto does better 'in between tones' I suggest Trying a mesa boogie Stiletto at your local store with your guitar--- than compare it to other amps .....if you find an amp you like better, you will have done good
p.s -the new VHT sig x is supposed to be woth trying

| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 6/24/2008 11:19:25 AM | Awsome thread guys,
I play Ibanez, through JCM 900 4/12 1960a cabinet. I have an amercian tele also. Effects Boss GT8.
Need more Ibanez guitars (one for each tunning), i play only Ibanez. Fell on the Tele by chance, i'm not a big Fender fan, got too used to the Wizard neck.
Gibsons and PRS are too damn expensive... :(

| The guitar player's [GEAR] thread Posted: 6/29/2008 11:47:50 PM | I have a 76' gibson explorer that I bought used when I was 17.Its a great guitar, but its a bit heavy and doesn't stay in tune very well. The high "E" string sticks and breaks often because of the sharp angle it has to go around to the machine heads. I use a pencil to lube it,works quite well. I also have a strat copy, and another guitar that I made in high school woodwork class. Its a copy of the Vulcan that Buck Dharma (Blue Oyster Cult) played in the late 70's.
I have a 100 watt Marshall JMP super lead and a 412 celetion cab.For effects, I use a digitech GNX3.Its a very versatile rig, the only issues I have with it are, its hard to change programming quickly(I always forget the proper sequence to save the new settings) and the tube amp really exaggerates the distortion. It works better on my old solid state bass amp.
I would really like to try a Mesa Boogie head.I've heard they're a very versatile amp. Most likely, the green stripe one from the early 90's, or the dual rectifier.
I enjoyed reading all the posts about gear, keep on rockin' | |

| The guitar player's [GEAR] thread Posted: 6/29/2008 11:53:00 PM | I also have no clue how to plug straight into an amp and get metal sound. There is nothing i've tried or own that's hard enough.
Amps: Fender Twin Reverb 1969 (no kiddin', I know it's not metal, but just sounds sweet) Traynor YCV 80 Line 6 Spider II ( the solid state just doesn't cut it... but I don't really know how to tune it , suggestions?) and random garbage Fiddles: Newer Gibson Flying V 2003 Gibson Les Paul Standard Cherryburst 1970's Gibson Explorer 1980's Gibson Explorer with EMG 81s Late 90's Fender Stratocaster American Late 90's Jackson V or whatever that is called... in pieces. I have EMG KFKs to put in, not done yet. Other guitars, nothing worth mentioning, except for the Guild JF30 Jumbo. But that's acoustic.
So, anyone familiar with the line 6 or how to input the knobs on a Boss Metal Zone to the Traynor or the Twin Reverb?
I don't want to start buying racks and hardcore gear! I don't have enough studio room for all this!!!
LOL.. Guitar is addictive! | |

hey man , RE: dbx compressor rack I have the dbx 1066 it is great for bass I have not tried it for guitar yet If you are using it for guitar --you want to put it first right after the guitar,it is good for sustain solos, country ,clean police sus guitar chords putting a compressor after a high gain pre amp of distortion is a no no it will amplify the noise ps -cool that you bought the allen and heath-mine is made in England-it is pretty solid
42 4 u 100 watt Marshall JMP super lead is a killer head my advice is to not use the digitech.... it is all digital stay analog it is designed to go into a clean amp like a power amp or bass head
suggested rig for tonal nirvana:
guitar----analog distortion pedal/overdrive----100 watt Marshall JMP super lead --->
----->90% dry pre ampsignal back - -efx loop out to radial efx loop mix pedal -- ---->10% ---to delay/reverb-->efx return
justinincredible669 my advice is to trade the traynor and line 6 on a mesa boogie stiletto -in the long run this is the best choice --trying to get good metal tones with the metal zone and an open back 'blues amp' like the fender or traynor ,is only a bandaid solution (been there done that) keep the Fender twin for blues and clean | |

| The guitar player's [GEAR] thread Posted: 6/30/2008 5:57:47 AM | Guitars: B.C.Rich Warlock 1985 - Seymour Duncan Invader in Bridge, Home Made in Neck. The home made can be set to only pick up with the top 3 nodes or the bottom 3, the Seymour Duncan can reverse phase and tone via switch. Home Made Explorer using Mahogony - My pride and joy, took a month to carve it out, EMG85 in Neck, EMG60 in bridge, each are on their own battery with switches to cut power from the battery. With the power cut it sounds good for muddy blues, power on and it's wicked clean and doesn't loose identity during distortion. $60 Walmart Acoustic, I stuck several mic heads inside and wired them to a port to allow recording with it. Also flattened a lot of the frets to dirty up the tone a bit.
Amp: Mesa Boogie - Added an extra mini-tube to warm up the sound a bit more.
Speakers: Vintage 35 4x12 - Added noise filter circuits to each speaker, and a home made reverb coil which can be switched on and off via a single button pedal.
Pedals: Digitech GNX3 Digitech RP200 Line 6 Digital Amp-Simulator Line 6 Guitar Port (to allow me to use their SDK to create entirely new effects) Danelectro Fab Tone Cry Baby Wah, Zakk Wylde eddition Home Made pedal using a CD laser and mirrors inside a pringle can to generate very interesting effects, modulation on the laser and position of the mirrors allow for variations.
For cords I only buy Monster Cable these days, they provide a very low noise sound and are kinda difficult to break the internal wires.
I lined all of the electric guitar's cavities with tin foil to prevent monitors and fluorescent lights from interfering with the sound.
I use way to many picks, have 12 small boxes with different sized picks, and a big box with random sizes tossed in. Mostly though I just use a Tortex .86 mm.
For strings I only use Dean Markley Nicklesteel, they may rust faster than most, but the sound is absolutely incredible, they are also more flexible at higher gauges.
Not currently in a band, but I am very serious about my music and the sounds I come up with, crazy part is the whole rig, minus the GNX3 was put together very cheap. | |

| The guitar player's [GEAR] thread Posted: 6/30/2008 12:48:58 PM | Hey!
New to the thread :)
I'm thinking of setting up a small home studio - any suggestions? Ideally it would all be as portable as possible, but I'd like iTunes-ready quality 'for cheap' lol (so maybe that will have to mean not-so-portable lol)
I'm a singer/songwriter with just a classical & acoustic guitar (Ibanez AE18PK)... (& a synth)
Any suggestions? (for a mic for female vocals &/or guitar mic, & other gear-?)
(Sorry if this has been discussed before, didn't manage to wade through all 99 pages :) but would appreciate a link in this case :)) | |

yes I have a 16:2 mixwizard --first generation, made in England I don't use the onboard efx (there is a cool editing program you can download from their site) mine has 6 efx loops which I sometimes run efx on--reverbs,old rack delays and flangers. | |

| The guitar player's [GEAR] thread Posted: 7/15/2008 3:58:19 PM | Yo G-man,
So my bro-in-law and I are trying our hands at building a bass body...and I had a wild idea for the bridge....not sure if it'll work but may be worth a try...
I figured I'd buy some graph tech saddles and put them through a nice thick slab of ebony...granted the string tension might be too much for a piece of wood...but I figure if we route out the body...sink the slab about a 1/4" and screw it down right through the top it would probably be pretty solid.....
Though I thought of something that might defeat the idea all together....grounding....would it be enough to glue a thin strip of metal to the underside of the slab? or do the strings themselves need to touch metal in order for proper grounding? | |
|
| The guitar player's [GEAR] thread Posted: 7/16/2008 12:24:00 AM | yes that can work you can make that type of saddle,it is like an acoustic bridge the strings need to touch the ground, so have the ground wire attach to the tailpiece were the strings are secured to the body | |

| The guitar player's [GEAR] thread Posted: 7/17/2008 3:18:08 PM | | The guitar in my pic is a Hondo guitar. It has amazing tone. I also have an Epiphone SG, and a Les Paul copy. I'm trying to find a better and louder amp right now. My 15 watt Peavy just isn't cutting it. I love the Diditech multi effects pedal I have. | |

| The guitar player's [GEAR] thread Posted: 8/6/2008 11:04:36 PM | Hey all. Nice thread, I had to dig back to see if my old posts were here.
:)
I play a buncha Ibanez guitars, mainly RG550's. Couple marshall amps, played in bands for years, have a full on PA setup, and a Tascam 2488 that I really should use more than I do.
Great thread!!!
