| The guitar player's [GEAR] thread Posted: 8/7/2008 11:44:12 AM | | ... had to make a tech suggestion with out a diagram so sort of guessed on your idea .why not reinforce the ebony with a metal fender type bridge. cut the ebony with a L so the bridge hole abut up to the ebony...so the strings run through the metal and the ebony, Glue the ebony to transfer the vibrations and screw the bridge into the ebony and the body | |

| The guitar player's [GEAR] thread Posted: 8/26/2008 6:59:38 AM | guitarman100 this is a good thread. You can never get enough feedback on this topic. Any suggestions on new strings for a mid sized 4 string bass? I use Blue Steel but would like to experiment. Been using them for 17 years. Not into lights or extra lights, any ideas on mediums ? (.040-.105) Sites? Prices? I like the strings but the tech is changing everyday. | |

| The guitar player's [GEAR] thread Posted: 8/28/2008 2:46:40 AM | | Mesa boogies rule!!!!and I want a crank amp really bad. I've always wanted to get my hands on a vintage fender strat. preferably between the years 1968 to 1972.Do you all know how much they are now? It's crazy.I own a strat with a jb humbucker in the neck pick up,it sounds pretty close to the brown sound.I also own alot more other strats that are stock.I own a cordaba,it's a student classacal guitar, sounds like a dreamI also own an ovation.i own a line 6 flex tone 2.I also have a wha wha pedal the jimy hendrix one. | |
|
| The guitar player's [GEAR] thread Posted: 8/28/2008 8:09:11 PM | I can't use the Blue Steels, or any other stainless steel string, the mids are really cold sounding and they all have real low lows and real high highs, no matter what brand they are.
I use nickel round wound either Ernie Ball or GHS Boomers .045 .065 .085 .105
Nickel rw has for me a balanced tone between lows and highs and they are definitely warmer sounding strings.
They get that "piano string" tone for me, and I play pretty hard with my right hand and I break them before they go dead so changing them often keeps a great tone on the bass.
The DRs are just too expensive, and I break them just as fast as EB or GHS.
Try Stringthis dot com or Juststrings dot com for online orders I use both of them.

| The guitar player's [GEAR] thread Posted: 8/28/2008 11:21:21 PM | | I got something else to say.I went to a really good music school and met some of the worlds best guitar players. It does not matter what gear you play on.Eddie Van Halen can still sound the same on a piece of shit amp and a crappy guitar, aside from the effects he use.same goes with Stevie ray Vaughen and the rest of them | |
|
| The guitar player's [GEAR] thread Posted: 8/29/2008 2:19:50 PM | true but good gear just makes it so much better, but then again the best delta blues slide tone I even had was from a 5.00 plywood no name guitar , that is an eception . | |

| The guitar player's [GEAR] thread Posted: 8/29/2008 3:44:09 PM | Nice kit there bud!!
I just got one of the hand made 1986 clones from Sligo amps built on a metro amps kit with Merc Mag trannies, it sounds great.
I am glad I didn't start with some POS reissue and then pay somebody to gut it and mod it, I would have ended up with $3k in it I am sure. I'm tickled with the tone, it's just like going back to 1970 and walking in a music store to plug up a 50w plexi, that was brand new then.
The cabinet I like most is a ri 1960ax with G12H heritage with the 55Hz cones. I tried that cab with the G12M 25w greenbacks, it sounded okay, but lacked bass and the highs were sharp and almost obnoxious. I swapped the heritage (ebayed, nicely used) into it and played it, big difference, but still didn't quite have it.
Plugged the variac in and set it with a meter to 10.94 VAC and let her hum for about 15 hours out in the shed. OH YEAH!! Now we talking!
You could hear the difference in the volume and low end that the cab was making inside the shed, halfway across the yard! Now this head and cabinet really compliment each other, it NAILS that exact tone you hear on so many classic tracks, I can't begin to name them all but early Skynyrd, Duane Allman, Zeppelin, all the good old stuff is right there...
It has incredible harmonics, and the dynamic response is super nice, it responds to every nuance of your right hand and fingers, it's the best Marshall I have ever plugged into, and I have played scads of them in 40yrs of picking.

hey dudes thanks for the great posts, you have cool gear

| The guitar player's [GEAR] thread Posted: 8/29/2008 8:59:24 PM | | if you still have the Green back G12M been running 2 with 2 of the H. the bottom and top end of the H mixes well with the midds of the M. My Cab of H's are great but they have a 100bd rating that makes them loud next to the M 97db, so I can crank my NMV head more with the M. Mixing gives me a bit of both | |
|
| The guitar player's [GEAR] thread Posted: 8/30/2008 9:04:40 AM | I would mix them but then which one do you mic? Mic both? Expensive and time consuming but yeah neither speaker does exactly what the other one does so one adds what the other misses.
Google for "break in celestion speakers" and you will find this msg board:
http://www.thegearpage.net/board/index.php
Also on the Weber site, there is a formula for calculating how much AC voltage to put to a speaker to break it in without blowing it up.
If you have old speakers, do NOT do this to them! This works by putting a 60Hz signal to the speaker and it just sits there and hums for as long as you leave it connected, it works the suspension and loosens up the cone so the tone is louder, has more bass, and is more dynamic than it was while the cones were stiff.
If you get a "Hellatone" speaker, this is ALL they do to them, to "age" them before they sell them. They don't use a variac, they play recorded sound through them at night after they leave the shop.

| The guitar player's [GEAR] thread Posted: 8/30/2008 3:58:42 PM | | well for live, find the one that sounds the best ...experiment, Id suggest the GB since it is a bit overpowered in the mix.at 97db vs 100db,...but use you ears. studio :what tone are you seeking also a big fan of ambient miking so get the mix of both | |

| The guitar player's [GEAR] thread Posted: 8/30/2008 7:21:23 PM | mightbeme04
thanks for the info,I have some 200 watt ev speakers from a boogie cabinet I might try that with....the speaker /volt calculator say to us 23 volts
that will be loud.but it might be a good thing to mellow that speaker out
|
| The guitar player's [GEAR] thread Posted: 8/30/2008 10:42:26 PM | 200w EV? They put the harsh voice coils in those when they build 'em. Can't uninstall it!
Ebay them and get something else.. I am going to auction a set of 25w greenbacks tomorrow sometime, the ones that I took out of the cabinet I upgraded to the Heritage 30w models.
Your ears will love you for it!
Your back will also love you for it! EVs weigh a TON!

| The guitar player's thread Posted: 9/17/2008 9:35:25 AM | | i too have an Ibanez artcore AG75-semi hollowbody electric, a Cheap Epiphone acoustic electric, and my baby= a 1966 Guild T-100 slimline hollowbody-all original=and a fender hot rod deluxe amp- which i love but it is very hard for me to carry. | |

| The guitar player's [GEAR] thread Posted: 9/20/2008 10:14:34 AM | | just a plain old 12 string acoustic - electric fender. Or a mid to top model martin 6 string acoustic. for electric i'd go with a telecaster or les paul custom. maybe a fender strat for clean sounding electric strumming ( i like the gauge of fender strats). As far as amps and pedals. Hiwatt amps and pedals I don't know about much cuz i haven't played electric in about 15 years | |
