Back pain? I have had 5 back operations...........Due to injury...I was on pain killers for quite sometime..It really all depends on what type of problem you have....I myself had shattered vertabrates, rods, pins, wires, screws , tissue grafting, stem cell cages installed..

It took me a few days over three years to recover all the way..you have to keep your stomach muscles tight...keep them or get them in shape, also if you are over weight drop it...
Your body can get use to pain..also do a lot of stretching..Daily..

I have had 5 operations

Ok I decided to post here instead of starting a new thread.

I have had a bad back for at least 20 years from lifting something
ugh!!!

I have artheritis in back, neck, shoulders... also a pinched nerve
in my neck that won't go away. My thumb has no filling from this.

I fell this am about 4hrs ago I took a mustle relaxant but it's not
doing a thing for me.

Anyone have some ideas of what might help besides ice and a bit
of heat I did that already to lol

Help Please

You can buy easily in the uk or on the net. BUT to be honest I found after a while they didn't help much. Meditation is great and can really help you raise your pain thresh hold.
Pain killers make you constipated which only makes back pain worse. Gentle stretches ect can help but don't over do them. The most immportand thing is to learn to love yourself as you are now and not let the mind fight with the body. After looking at a hospitals dirty ceiling for 2 1/2 years I finally thought I got 2 choices either get up and at it or kill youself. Guess which one I chose? :-) BUT when things get really really bad a spliff hits the spot.

I saw a "Naturalpath" 5 times for my back pain. The first few hours after the sessions it was ok, but then the pain came back. Seeing a Physiotherapist now and also taking some pain killers. Had chronic back pains since childhood and they seem to get worse when I am down or depressed

Losing weight can help if you are overweight. Also, I agree about the stretching. What worked wonders for me was that gym exercise where you pull down some weights while sitting.

Back problems arent always curable, though some treatments do help. I pulled my Spinal Erector last summer, a tear, and while im better now, I still get slight pains sometimes. Im also a little gunshy about deadlifting heavy, I dont like to go over 500lbs anymore. Just a mental barrier.

Get checked out by a doctor, and maybe try a massage therapist or chiro. Weight training can help to, though dont overdo it with a bad back.

After 15 years of it,I've learned to live with it and work around it.Wasn't gonna add much to this until I saw the thread again after getting up with a particularly stiff low back (can they transplant stiffness now?I can think of another area of the body where "stiffness" would be better served).I've done acupuncture,biofeedback,meditation,medication,herbal/natural/holistic/homeopathic and chiropractic treatments and surgery.I've just learned to carry around a tube of Biofreeze in my gym bag.A big part of it is mental.Don't let it catch up with you.Focus more on what you CAN do rather then what you can't.Work to strengthen the areas that support the back, abs and legs.Keeping cardio in good shape is key too, keep the blood flow up.

Depends on the injury. I thoroughly ripped a lat muscle in an accident many years ago. I was always careful about lifting, especially deads, until a little over a year ago, when I got overconfidant and once again, ripped it (third time). I've got scar tissue that doesn't allow proper muscle action and its tied directly to a nerve node that also is damaged when the muscle tears. I think the normal action of this muscle is now impaired and its a weak spot. I'm more than gunshy about pushing my limit - and its not a mental barrier. I'll rip it again, if I'm not careful.

Maybe if I was very careful, I could inch past my personal best, but like you, power lifting isn't my central interest. I simply use lifts in my training. The risk of additional injury to this muscle and nerve center isn't worth the minimal gains in performance.

BEST stuff ever !!!... you`ll have to get a prescriription for this stuff..and it costs about $60.00 for a tube of 30gm ,... but you only use a dab at a time... So you may consider a smaller tube !!!!.... Its called "Lidocaine / prilocaine 5% " common name is EMLA ....The dentist use it on kids before giving a needle.. but its only used on the skin surface ,,,Not internal !!....
I have used it numerous times, and all the proessional athletes use it ...arm joints if playing tennis... etc... When I spread a area , its a good idea to cover it with a thin plastic ,...like the bag you get to put veggies in,,,or sarran wrap... this way it extends the life of the medication....
Take care .... John

Ooooooo!!! My doctor gave me a prescription for the same thing, except it's in a pad form. I just stick it on my lower back and it instantly kills the pain.

If you don't have much money or insurance you can try Thermacare? I use the ones for the neck on my lower back and they help a lot.

I am a nationally certified and Florida state licensed massage therapist that specializes in deep tissue / myofacial release modalities of massage therapy.
MA-0026875 / Florida license

As I have not put my hands on you nor have I seen any x-rays, I can only offer my opinion.

I have to agree with the posters who stress that you continue to see your health care provider. I would be very careful about taking the drugs, though muscle relaxers should help ... it just won't fix. Some things that I believe will help you deal with the back pain. Always work within your comfort level and focus on your breath while getting any type of therapy.

Don't recall if you've mentioned seeing a massage therapist but would recommend you doing so ... ask for neuromuscular therapy and / or rolfing ... ask the therapist too focus on the psoas, glutes (butt muscles), hamstrings and abdominals. This is your core and working these areas should bring you some relief. May not cure your pain but should help you deal with it more effectively. The psoas work will probably be very uncomfortable but, when I do that for my clients suffering from back pain, it usually is the greatest release and allows my work on other areas to have more benefit ... this is specialized work so ask the therapist if they are qualified and experienced in performing this type of deep massage. Until you resolve core issues, you are probably only going to get short term fixes, if that.

Get yourself some tennis balls ... I like to use six ... put them on the floor or, if you can't get down on the floor, you can lean against a wall and then drop them down so that they are between your back and the wall ... 3 & 3 lined up and parallel to each other and on either side of the spine for the low back ... 3 in a diamond for each butt cheek ... and then sit / lie on them ... move your body up and down / side to side so that the tennis balls will dig deep into the muscle tissue and break up adhesion / stimulate blood flow too those areas that need attention. It is a cheap massage therapist at your beck and call. I tell all of my clients to keep tennis balls handy ... and too use them daily. Do not work past your comfort level.

Stretch ... and, if able, do some type of excercises to strengthen your core abdominal muscles ... even if it's holding those muscles tight for 20 - 30 seconds and then releasing ... similar to Keigels. I wouldn't recommend full sit -ups but maybe some slight crunches ... there are good web sites that will show you appropriate stretches for your problem

If you can afford it, my highest recommendation is too go and buy yourself an INVERSION TABLE ... use it daily ... you don't have to hang all the way upside down to get benefit from using this ... I find it is MOST helpful in helping my clients manage their back pain and, by using the inversion table, you are also affecting other processes.

Also, if you haven't tried it yet, I suggest acupuncture ... it may sound kooky to some but I swear by it ... it may take more than one session but I have seen amazing results when acupuncture is used with other modalities.

Wanted to add one more thing ... if you are able, I would suggest going to a podiatrist ... foot doc ... and perhaps having your feet looked at ... inserts could really help you with your low back issues ... most people have one leg that is slightly longer than the other and that causes your entire pelvis area to shift ... insoles can help to balance this and bring your pelvis back into alignment ...

Good luck ... pain sucks a** ... waving my healing hands in your direction.

Can you wave them in my direction as well?

Woke up this morning with a major back ache... never had it before... so, I figured that I will try to see a doc early next week if it does not stop till then... but, what do I do now?

I took some Ibuprofen and applied Ice/Hot cream... anything else that I can get over the counter till I see the doc?

Damn it. I am not liking this...

I suffered two years of chronic back pain due to a cracked disc. I tried everything there was to try including accupuncture, chiropractic adjustments, painkillers (prescription and over-the-counter), ointments, liniments, physical therapy, massage, ice packs, heat patches -- you name it! Some gave temporary relief and some gave no relief at all.

I had two cortisone injections in my spine. When they failed to take care of the problem, my doctor began talking to me about surgery. He told me flat out that the results of back surgery aren't always so good and that he wanted me to give yoga or pilates a try before he operated.

I began a yoga practice and began feeling relief after the first few sessions. After one year of regular practice, I was completely free of pain. It's going on seven years now, and I'm still pain free. Yoga is a healing exercise that focuses on the spine. "A healthy spine means a healthy life," is what my teachers say. It's true!

I'd also like to recommend a book: "Healing Back Pain Naturally" by Dr. John Sarno. It was also very helpful in my recovery. It's a classic among back books and can be found at most bookstores or online.

Yoga really works your back, and it sounds a bit like that's what you need.

^^^^ Was just going to post that yoga has made a huge difference in my life. I've been practicing yoga once a week, sometimes twice a week for the past year, and it's made a huge difference in strengthening my back and core and increasing my flexibility. It might help you too.
