Hi, Just to let ya'll know I am deaf I lost my hearing when I was a baby , my parents didn't know what to do . so they sent me to speech therapy for years with hearing aids. I didn't know sign language. My parents wanted to me learn to talk so I can be in the hearing word. as I growing up I didn't know there was others deaf till I transffer to another school. I learn sign language and I love it, well went to college were there lots of deaf I tried to get to date some of them but they preffered to date hearing ( why ? I dunno) . I tried hearing but as I make the approach I think what may of made them nervous or something is my hearing aid I have on ... it just something that catch their attention and not feel to comfortable . I can talk really good just can't hear well. when I go out I alway feel left out cause where I am from there are not that many deaf population and sometime have hard time talking to women I sometime sense that hearing people don't really know how to react when comes to hearing disablities, some people just don't realize how smart deaf people are. we may not hear but we can see lots of things. well that all I can think of for now

As for my comment about experiencing music. I said I wished that deaf people could have the *option*of experiencing *like I do*. I know that they can enjoy music, I just don't know if it's as good for them as it is for me:)

Mindsky, and the deaf people that I know would say to you that they wish your senses would be as heightened as well as theirs are.

My friend "M" is one of the best drivers that I have ever seen. She sees trouble way before I do. She feels vibrations that I do not feel, she smells things much better than I do.

When we go dancing, she knows exactly what the beat of the music is, when it starts when it stops. She may not hear the words, so I sign them for her. Later after the song is over, she will tell me what a horrible song that is based upon the lyrics. Then we have a good laugh.

Huh? Oh...ok...yes, I actually think it could work out quite well, especially because I am a woman. I do believe a deaf man would probably have more tolerance with me...with my ramblings and all

Unless I somehow missed a post that this was in reference to...

Braille is for the blind, not the deaf!

Which reminds me of a remarkable person I had the pleasure of meeting at one of those "deaf function" thingies! This gentleman was deaf AND blind...was not born such. Yet he had learned coping skills that amaze me! He utilized ASL to communicate...lightly touching the speakers hands to "read" the signs! If the speaker did not know ASL, he would very lightly place a couple fingertips against the persons lips and "read" them that way! AMAZING!

To the poster who mentioned the heightened senses...I get teased about this often! I have such a keen sense of smell, that it actually saved a friend's house from burning down because I kept INSISTING I smelled something burning. At work...I have a colleague who has...errr...BO. I mentioned this to my superior and he blamed it on my "sensitive schnozz!" But NOW, others are finally noticing the lingering odor!

Would I want to date a deaf person ?
How unfair is that ? Why should I be the only one in the relationship who has to hear the whining ? Hell, she can just close her eyes when she doesn't want to "hear" mine anymore. No, that's just plain old unfair...in a relationship you're supposed to SHARE the misery !

Pulse...I sure hope this was humor!! LOL

Because most deaf DO NOT "turn a deaf ear" lol to communication since they despise when others do it to them! They are actually, in all irony, BETTER LISTENERS. :o)

Harley, you are right about that, deaf ppl are better listeners. My friend "M" use to love going to restaurants and then interpret for us couples fighting from across the room. Or she would tell us if men were talking about us, and exactly what they were saying.

It use to throw them off guard when they would approach us and ask to join us. We would then say ya... sure you can, but instead of you hitting on "M" she prefers your friend, and "L" likes your friend Mike, and you can sit there and listen because you wont be fukking any of us tonight.

That was always entertaining!!!!

take my advice: please do date a deaf person, even if you don't sign. they read lips well and are the absolute best company. i dated a deaf guy off and on for years. the only thing they can't do is call you. big deal. they are also better (not sure why) in bed. fyi. don't look at a person's handicap as a stumbling block; chances are they think the exact opposite.

^^^ yes he can, if he has TDD. If you dont have TDD, you can use a relay operator. It is their profession, and the calls are strictly confidential. They have to relay the conversation exactly word for word.

Remember, after done talking, just say SK. That means stop keying. When you are done the entire conversation, say SKSK. That means you are totally done with the conversation and time to hang up.

lmfao ackrite.... no, they are there just to relay the conversation between a hearing person and a deaf person who has a TDD machine.

Mind, you it can get very entertaining when the TDD operator says, I dont think I can say that. Then I say, yes you can, they are telling me, and I am telling them, you are just a medium.

LMAO Ackrite!

Wow, Gbg...I have never had a relay op (aka as CA's) tell me that they cannot say something! I've had some very slooooow typers who are not quite ready for relay, but keep in mind that relay used to be run strictly by volunteers. (Not anymore...look at your phone bill and you should see in most states, that relay is paid for by EVERYONE...small amount of like 12 cents per month...but still)

Yep...lessons of TTYing or Relaying...
GA = Go Ahead meaning you are done with what you are typing or saying
SK = Stop Keying at the end of the conversation...another words for "LATER, DUDE!"

And PLEASE people...don't tell a relay op, "Tell her....." because she will type EXACTLY that! LOL Talk like you are talking to the person direct!

Horror story on relay....I was dealing with friggin' cancer...bad enough alone, right? Well this was pre-CI so I would call my Doc's via relay, and one time the op typed in parentheses (they type ALL environmental sounds such as a keyboard, phone ringing, background talking, etc.) "I HATE these calls...she is such a pain in the azz!" Well I was FURIOUS...penned off a nasty letter to my Doc who had a major meeting with his staff on conduct and patient relations...and that person sure sucked up to my azz from then on out! LOL

wow Harley!!!! In Canada, we have a 1800. I have never had to pay additional charges for calling any of my deaf friends in Canada.

You are right, some relay operators type exactly word for word, so it is important that you speak exactly the same way as you would to anyone else you phone.

Harley, when I speak to "M" I treat her the exact same way I would any other of my friends. Once when we were having a conversation, I said "M" are you deaf, that isnt what I said at all. You werent listening to me again. The relay op, said I cant type that!!!! I said ya, you can, and you will. We are friends, and I am not pointing out the obvious to her. Sometimes she just doesnt hear me correctly. Usually "M" replies back with a smartassed comment. She cracks me up.

Odd to come across this thread just now as I am asking myself this question currently. I am corrosponding with woman from another dating site who it turns out is deaf. She is very articulate and we seem quite compatible on many levels, so I am thinking my answer is a definite yes, I would like to date her.

I haven't actually dated her yet though, so I really have no idea what sort of impact it will make. I am getting a few hints from the corrospondance, but I realize you never really understand a situation until you are in it.

Basically though, if the woman of my dreams turned out to be deaf, I don't think I would care.

This is a little off the topic of the last few threads, but it is a story related to being deaf. This happened to me about 12 years ago. I had a foster child, and I had her and my daughter in the back seat, (They wanted to sit together...so what if I looked like a taxi driver, right?), as we were going to take my foster child to her therapy appointment.

Anyway, I'm driving along, and the kids are screaming and yelling. I'm asking them to please be quiet...they kept at it, and I said "Listen! I can't hear what you are saying, so we will discuss this as soon as we get to the Therapists office!!!" About this time, as I'm getting to the freeway entrance, I look in my rear view mirror and see the flashing lights of a cop. I pull over, thinking he's going to go around me. Well, not only does he NOT go around me, but all of a sudden these cops, (7 vehicles in all), come from all directions, the vehicles pointing at me from all angles!!! I'm thinking, 'WTF'????

The cop makes me get out and go stand next to another cop while he searches my car. I turned to the cop next to me, and said, "What was I stopped for?" He said, "Speeding". I said, "Gee, I've never been searched, and had so many cops involved, just for speeding!!" He said, "Well, why wouldn't you stop?? He was trying to pull you over quite a ways back." I said, "Oh my God! I'm so sorry, I didn't hear the sirens", and lifted up my hair so he could see my hearing aids. He started laughing, and yelled to the other cops, "Hey, you guys! We don't need to stick around...She's DEAF!!!" They were all laughing, as they left me alone with the original cop, and he was MAD...his temples were throbbing, and his hand was shaking as he wrote my ticket!!!

I was a nervous wreck, but that isn't the end of the story.....this is the kicker!!! I got back in the car, and said to the kids, "Why didn't you TELL me that the cops were behind me with their sirens on?"
(Are you ready for this?)

They said "We were TRYING to, Mom, but you kept telling us to BE QUIET!!!!!"

@ Linguatic msg#97, signed interpretation of music performances is indeed beautiful. We learned to sign-sing to the song, "I Can See Clearly Now" and it was Awesome! I swear, one of these days, I'm going to re learn enough sign to be able to do that song again. It left a lasting impression on me.

@gbg msg#105, and Kat msg#109, My sense of smell is really keen too, and it's not always a GOOD thing! I'll smell a skunk in the neighborhood or on the road long before anyone with me is aware of it!

@gbg msg#112, I'm also pretty good at "eavesdropping" by lip reading. I would amaze my friends sometimes when I would tell them something someone across the room said. this doesn't happen very often, though. Usually someone gets in the way, or the person talking, turns their head in the middle of talking.

Oh, D!!!!!!!! I am ROFLMAO...which with bronchitis trying to surface, is soooo not good! **hack, cough, hack** LMAO That was hilarious...especially the end...I can envision it perfectly!!

We could turn this into an entire thread on Deafie Humor...but does it bore those who have "normal hearing?"

BTW...where is the OP?? LOL I think I scared her off!!

Some of the funniest things can occur, romantically speaking...causing mucho laughter in the bedroom, which I think is awesome! My guy and I were getting quite frisky when he knocked my CI off...so I just left it off cause it was...well, close to that moment where I just wanted no interruptions! ;o) Anyway...he is making some antics...I see his mouth moving...when he suddenly reaches down and grabs his discarded SOCKS and shoves them in my mouth! He said I was too loud and he was worried the kids would hear us...but me...I was oblivious to it since I did not realize how loud I was being! LOL We laughed our butts off about that one!

GBG...what's an "1800?" LOL

Re. eavesdropping by lipreading...
There used to be this restaurant called Max & Ermas that had telephones on each table, so you could call another table. It was a great place to flirt! Mom and I would go in and watch what the guys who were flirting/calling us, were saying about us from across the room! LOL

Yes HarleyKat , that was humour by the way.

Personally I'm not sure I care if somebody is deaf or not but the opportunity to date somebody who's deaf has never come up so really it's not on my radar.
