Ed Bickert!! Hey! He played at my parents' wedding, in 1950! (Apparently my Dad shortchanged the band by 5 bucks, too!)

| Best Guitarist of All time Posted: 12/8/2005 11:33:04 PM | Wow I must say that I am shocked at the answers here. The lack of jazz, classical, and non-mainstream guitarists is really dissapointing I'm sorry to say. I will add a few names here, in no particular order:
Classical: David Russell, Paul Galbraith, Stephan Schmidt, David Tannenbaum, Pepe Romero, John Williams, Julian Bream, Andres Segovia... this list can go on forever but try listening to a few of these. Paul Galbraith will burn practically any electric/pop guitarist into the ground. Jazz: WES MONTGOMERY!!! honestly he was probably the best [jazz] guitarist of the 20th century, and its even more mind boggling when you realize this guy was self taught. He wasn't great because of his technical prowess, (which is amazing, piano players have a difficult time playing his music nevermind guitarists, and even today no guitarist EVER has been able to chord solo like he could) it is because of the sensitivity and subtlety he was able to play with. Not to mention his fabulous compositions and arrangments.
Putting a guitarist like Melmsteen(spelling yeah yeah) seems a little bit shallow. Yes he can play blindingly fast, but he has bad tone and his phrasing kinda stinks I'm sorry but it does. The harmonic minor scale get REALLY boring after a while too.
Try listening to some flamenco if you like the harmonic minor sound. Most of the great players can improvise as fast as Yngvie (who very obviously sits in his basement practicing his ridiculous solos 8 hours a day) and do so with better tone and phrasing as well as being able to improvise through modulations (this is when the key center changes).
I am not knocking any names specifically put here, but open your ears to new music and you shall be greatly rewarded!!!

| Best Guitarist of All time Posted: 12/9/2005 12:00:30 AM | I recently discovered Lenny Breau...
Everyone who hears his stuff for the first time always asks: "that's just him in the studio right?" This guy can do things that I didn't think were possible on guitar....
The BEST? who knows...but he blows me away that's for sure...

Try post #237
Not much classical, but to me it's mostly rote and regurgitation....... (jk)

He's one of the most imitated, I would put a few above him for chord soloing though, not in the least of which: Lenny Breau

just cause i have seen lack of mention of such players as adrian belew
On that note...has ANYONE given an honourable mention to ROBERT FRIPP? Belew's counterpart in one of the best bands ever...King Crimson!
From what I've read, I'm pretty sure Belew is a well rounded guitarist, I seem to recall reading a quote that went something like this:
"few people would believe that I can finger pick like Chet Atkins"
sure it's self-proclaimed, but still worth mentioning.....
BELEW & FRIPP, BELEW & FRIPP, BELEW & FRIPP!
.....there, made up for the lack of mentions for two of the most innovative guitarists EVER!
