| Best Guitarist of All time Posted: 12/10/2005 10:17:35 AM | Hey Dreams, Greg Lake on accoustic guitar is great(remember E.L.P is a trio) so Greg plays a mean guitar as well..Songs like "From the Beginning", C'est La Vie just to name a couple of song he plays..Also his work with King Crimson first album...guitar was also good there..of course shadowed by Fripp but non the less, acoustics were great from Lake... Actually,it was by accident that he had to play bass with Elp because he was taught classical guitar in college... My two cents... | |

| Best Guitarist of All time Posted: 12/10/2005 11:16:17 AM | @stevex...no offence Dude but this tread his about prog rock wich means a mix of Classical/Baroque blended with Rock...there is a ton of good classical musicians outhere but not all of them could mix the two styles together and delivered...We are talking of two different worlds ,here...I do agree with you on one thing: Malmsteen is a good neck player but after the frills...not as creative then others i've seen....
My 2 cents... | |

| Best Guitarist of All time Posted: 12/11/2005 1:24:37 AM | Yup I think I need to mention Buckethead....he's definately off the hook....
"Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains" is so very refreshing when it comes to rock in this day and age....Buckethead is a MASTER.....
|
| Best Guitarist of All time Posted: 12/11/2005 9:00:47 AM | buckethead makes my pants feel all warm and fuzzy when i see him go off...
his only downfall is the over use of electronic noises.... but, I can look past it to hear some of that bizzaro shredding =)

| Best Guitarist of All time Posted: 12/11/2005 8:58:31 PM | quote Ulrich Roth (now going as Uli Jon Roth) Former Scorpions guitarist. Also had his own band called Electric Sun. Hendrix disciple, invented a guitar with added frets called the "Sun Guitar". He nows composes and plays classical pieces. The Scorpions we all know today are nothing compared to the Scorpions of the 70's when Ulrich was in the band. His creativity is limitless. Just listen to his music from various stages in his career.
You are right ,I almost forgot, wow actually someone that remembers them. Most people only knew the scorps after they came out with Rock you like a hurricane ,but the band at that point was a shadow of what they were with Roth .
I think one of their best albums was i think their first it was called "fly to the rainbow" The guitar tremelo work was crazy in "speedy's comin"

| Best Guitarist of All time Posted: 12/12/2005 6:21:43 AM | I played with a lot of the guys mentioned here from the 80's (in support & with them) bands & to be honest none of them should be classed as greats.
Excellent players I'd say
Satriani django Jimmi Hendrix alan holdsworth
But head & shoulders above all of these is Carl Verheyen.

Reply Ive been playing guitars for ever and have disected many solos and would agree with you on your choice in all except Satriani,he is over rated. Oh yeah let me add someone else to the list. Steve Via

| Best Guitarist of All time Posted: 12/12/2005 3:14:44 PM | OK the more I listen to Vai the more I become convinced. But he's not got past his teacher yet.
Still neither are a patch on carl Verhayen.

| Best Guitarist of All time Posted: 12/13/2005 2:35:27 AM | I think for each person, the "Best Guitarist of All Time" Award should go to the person who actually inspired you to pick up a guitar and attempt to play a riff.....
....even if it's a guitar GOD or the regular "working joe" at your local music store, who takes the time to show you a quick way to do tablature or a tricky riff.
Any guitarist who inspires a kid to learn how to play and express himself, is worth their weight in gold. (We need more guitar players than video game addicts in this world.)
God bless the creative individual soul and the positive inspiration they give to listeners.
(I love just about everyone's music mentioned!)

Reply I only have had 3 albums by the scorps
Fly to the rainbow[great album] Live at tokyo[crappy disapointing album] And the one I cant remember the name but it had "Well burn the sky" on it[pretty good album]

| Best Guitarist of All time Posted: 12/14/2005 5:23:12 AM | Nope Satriani taught vai.
carl verheyen is acknowledged as the top session player in america. He's appeared on countless albums as guest player. He tours with robben Ford, supertramp, and his own group with Cliff Hugo on bass (Ray Charles band). You won't watch TV tonight without hearing something with him in it.
a quick google will bring up his website with all the details etc you could want.

| Best Guitarist of All time Posted: 12/14/2005 7:57:38 AM | Yeah I remember Satriani was one of Vias teachers which seems a bit puzzling ,since Via is so much better. I guess its just the natural talent that Via has. Unless Satriani has some secrete kiler solo hidden and is waiting for the right time to unleash it on the world ,lol I have never heard anything by him that really impressed me. | |
|
| Best Guitarist of All time Posted: 12/14/2005 8:03:48 AM | Quote and I gotta say that Hammett is 100% over rated
Reply I have to agree big time. since we ae talking about Satriani ,Hammett has done some stuff with Satriani ,and Satriani is the better of the two no doubt.
Hammett does these solos and I think.. were the hell are you going ,it makes no sence . Metallica's singers guitar solos make more sence to me.
