| Best Guitarist of All time Posted: 1/6/2005 1:00:16 AM | Wow,to pick just one,is next to impossible. But,if I absolutely had to go with one,it'd be ANGUS YOUNG= "AC/DC".
Honorable mentions, would also go out to..........
ALEX LIFESON= "RUSH"
JERRY CANTRELL= "ALICE IN CHAINS",(SOLO).Definitely one of the best, and most underrated guitarists,in music today.

| Best Guitarist of All time Posted: 1/6/2005 2:14:09 AM | Thanks BadBoyRokker... I was wondering when one of the best ....ANGUS....was gonna be mentioned.... So lets see, rock comes from Blues...and not many do the rock blues better than Angus, say what you want to about smooth, sloppy, shredding, sweet, innovative or any catchy riffs...he's by far the best in my eyes(ears)...and he's alive and well and still rockin'...or as he likes to say, "Just plukin' me guitar" I posted some of my other favs. on the I Wanna Rock thread....

| Best Guitarist of All time Posted: 1/7/2005 12:54:57 AM | Good question. There are many influential players for each genre of music. It depends soley on the music that moves you. On the basis of technical prowess my votes are between Michael Angelo, Buckethead, Yngwie Malmsteen, Chet Atkins, and Roy Clark.
As far as "most influential," that is possibly another matter entirely.

| Best Guitarist of All time Posted: 1/8/2005 2:37:18 AM | i have been reading everyone's responses and i am very concerned to see that not one person mentioned a classical guitarist, and even if you don't like classical guitar music classical guitarists have just as much musical capacity as any other guitarist and is furthermore devoted to being diligiently precise.
the best guitarist in recorded history is Andres Segovia.
Hands down.
listen to his stuff and you'll realize he could do anything that anybody else could do, and he'd make it sound beautiful.

|
| Best Guitarist of All time Posted: 1/8/2005 10:37:41 PM | I'm glad to see Chet Atkins get a mention earlier. And I'm largely unfamiliar with Junior Brown's work - it hardly ever gets any airplay up here in Alberta. On the other hand, I find that Brad Paisley is the next big thing in country guitar pickin'. His work actually reminds me of Chet Atkins. | |

There is NO best, this is always a debate where it's contributors are mostly out to advocate their own tastes as consumers. There are relatively few who can recognize the myriad qualities in what makes a great "Guitarist". If you were to ask the worlds "great" guitarists who the "best of all time" was, I'm willing to bet most folks would never have heard his name.
I have been playing for over 36 years with no loyalty to any one style. (I do lean towards Jazz as it's the most challenging to play and listen to). If I had to pick one name out of the many great guitarists, I would pick one that belonged to the man that has taken the art and science of playing guitar further than any. He was killed in '83 and no player has yet to raise the bar higher, ........IMHO.
Lenny Breau -Jazz/Country/Classical/Rock n' Roll player
....I'm in good company
"He is one of the true geniuses of the guitar. I suppose he is a musician's musician. His knowledge of the instrument and the music is so vast, and I think that's what knocks people out about him. But he's such a tasty player too. I think if Chopin had played guitar, he would have sounded like Lenny Breau." -Chet Atkins
"the greatest guitar player in the world today." -Chet Atkins on Lenny Breau
"He dazzled me with his extraordinary guitar playing... I wish the world had the opportunity to experience his artistry." -George Benson on Lenny Breau
"Lenny Breau played more great stuff at one time than anybody on the planet... with feeling and tone. He was the best that ever lived, bar none." -Danny Gatton

| Best Guitarist of All time Posted: 1/23/2005 7:14:45 PM | | its jimi hendrix of course dident you know that in the 60s the likes of eric clapton, townsend and what not were all jealous of jimi hendrix they used to go watch him play at shows and there jaws were on the floor!! dosent that answer your question? and speaking of keith richards his idol is in fact jimi hendrix aswell, and brian may the guitarist for queen his idol was hendrix and these guys themselfs are the best in the buissness and they look upto hendrix, so its no question that jimi hendrix is the best guitarist of all time, all others came after hendrix and dispite how good they are none never made the impact the hendrix made in the guitar world so in that respect makes him the best, just listen to all along the watch tower {even bob dylan took his hat off to hendrix for turning his song into a masterpiece} also voddoo child, purple haze to name a few. | |
