| Best Guitarist of All time Posted: 1/23/2005 7:23:52 PM | Meh. Hendrix was really sloppy live, from what I've seen/heard.
As to the thread title, it depends. Are we going on all out chops (ability to play a Gm Ionian scale in 16/9), ability to "play to a song" (I.E. Guitarmanship that isn't neccessarily technically superior, but just always seems to fit what song is being played), Mastery in one's field, "shredding" ability, Innovation or what?
Chops: John Petrucci Playing to a song: Lennon, Clapton, etc. Mastery in one's field: Stevie Ray Vaughn Shredding Ability: Probably Malmsteem Innovation: Townsend (yay for Powerchords!), Iommi (yay for drop tuning!), etc.

| Best Guitarist of All time Posted: 1/24/2005 10:41:32 PM | Shawn Lane (1963 - 2003)
It's reported that when Billy Gibbons heard Shawn play a flurry of notes onstage at a club, Billy fell off a barstool. At a NAMM convention, Ibanez had their top players (Vai, Satriani, Gilbert, Friedman, Beach, Lane and some others) jamming to "Goin' Down". When Shawn took his turn, there were dropped jaws and anguished looks onstage, because Shawn was showing just how high he could have set the marker.
The recordings that he did with Jonas Hellborg & Jeff Sipe (Personae, Time Is The Enemy, & Temporal Analogues of Paradise) are friggin' incredible metal/jazz fusion jams.

| Best Guitarist of All time Posted: 1/25/2005 12:06:27 AM | Mick Taylor, early 70's Stones. Some sweet soloing. Check out "Time Waits For No One", Can't You Hear Me Knocking? and "Moonlight Mile" Beautiful stuff.
Will always listen to Jimmy Page, Steve Howe, Brian May.
Runners up: Tony Iommni, Zack Wlydde (or something like that)

| Best Guitarist of All time Posted: 2/8/2005 7:25:01 PM | Alex Skolnick used to play lead gtr in Testament, but switched genres to jazz guitar. He fronts a trio and has a CD out called "Goodbye To Romance", that has rock songs done in jazz trio format. I've heard what he did with War Pigs, and it's quite tasty. Other covers are Detroit Rock City, No One Like You, Still Loving You, Dream On, Pinball Wizard and Goodbye To Romance. BTW, you spelled the name right.
My top 10 at the moment: Shawn Lane John McLaughlin Carlos Santana B. B. King Albert King Stevie Ray Vaughan George Harrison Eric Clapton Chet Atkins Steve Vai

| Best Guitarist of All time Posted: 2/8/2005 10:08:32 PM | | George Harrison! That was his name! Thank you George for Distortion!!! Skolnick was awesome in Testament. I was young, but I loved it! Return to Serenity - still good today. Chet was a cool guitarist, different style than my favs, but no doubt, he was good. What do you think of SRV's prodigy, Kenny Wayne Sheppard? | |

| Best Guitarist of All time Posted: 2/10/2005 3:01:44 PM | | Admittedly, I’ve only skimmed this forum. But has NO ONE mentioned Trey Anastasio? This can not stand! | |

| Best Guitarist of All time Posted: 2/10/2005 5:10:43 PM | This is an impossible question due to the variety of styles. A shredder like Jason Becker could play chord-melody like Joe Pass, for example.
Right now, I really enjoy Eric Johnson. He never plays a bad note. He can shred when he wants to. His style is similar to that of the late Shawn Lane, whom others have mentioned, but I dig EJ's tunes more. He was also incredibly modest and polite when I met him last month. So EJ gets my vote, though I recognize the impossibility of the question.
Petrucci is up there, as are Joe Pass, Dimebag Darrell, Pat Metheny, Brent Mason, and Van Halen. Depends on the style and the mood you're looking for.

| Best Guitarist of All time Posted: 2/10/2005 5:11:26 PM | | Becker could NOT have played chord melody like Pass. That's what i meant. ;) | |

| Best Guitarist of All time Posted: 2/14/2005 7:45:01 AM | i kinda like Nunu Bettencourt (sp?)
i think the grand prize winner here would have to go to JIMI PAGE without a doubt... i don't know many people who can master "Bron yaur stomp" which is also one of my all time favorites.

| Best Guitarist of All time Posted: 2/14/2005 8:12:01 AM | There are so many very talented guitarists out there from Zakk Wylde, Hendrix, Dave Mathews, Eddy VanHalen, Jak E. Lee to name a few!! But there is by no means a guitarist like Randy Rhoads!! He was a genious and it is too bad that he was taken from us so early in his life. Look at what he accomplished in his short life and just think of how much he could've done if he was still here today! Just listen to the guitar solo on Suicide Solution or for that matter, try to play "DEE", the little tune he made for his mom Delores. It is very hard to play!!!
Randy Rhoads Rules!!!!!!!!

| Best Guitarist of All time Posted: 2/14/2005 7:17:49 PM | | Having slept with my guitar for 36 years here it is. In any order SRV, Clapton, Les Paul, Danny Gatton, Jeff Beck. Honorable mentions to Bonnie Raitt, Duane Allman, Chet Atkins. You have to be a musician to appreciate Gatton. His protege and friend Tom Principato is really hot live although his studio work is lukewarm. | |

| Best Guitarist of All time Posted: 2/20/2005 7:01:29 PM | | How bout Stanley Jordan? Not someone I sit around and listen to, but I’m not aware of ANYONE who can play the way he does. | |
|
| Best Guitarist of All time Posted: 2/20/2005 8:52:11 PM | There are a few,
......he IS good, .....but when he left the path of his unorthodox style, ....he became one of many.
|
| Best Guitarist of All time Posted: 2/20/2005 10:07:07 PM | | I haven’t really followed him, but I’ve got a few CD’s and seen a few videos. Simply blew me away. Does he not do the two-hand tap stuff anymore? Are there others who do the lead over rhythm tapping stuff he does? I don’t know about anyone else. | |
