| Sports that make no sense Posted: 6/3/2006 9:49:14 AM | if you know any sport then it DOES make sense for you.
HOWEVER i know nothing about baseball and american "football" so these sports make no sense to me (if i knew them, surely they would make sense)

| Sports that make no sense Posted: 6/3/2006 6:53:51 PM | Soccer is 100% action? When's the last time you watched Italy play....?
Regarding figure skating, it is certainly true that the judging is done in a somewhat, umh, byzantine fashion, but I can guarantee you that after practicing backwards crossovers or chassees for an hour, any soccer player (or other athlete) would be on their knees begging for mercy and crying for their mommy. Never mind the jumping......
What makes absolutely 0 sense to me at this point is that poker is apparently considered a 'sport' right now.... Poker????????????

Football is THE best sport around.. no doubt about it and I'm coming from a place where you have cricket and rugby to compete with it.
American football is more like a computer game. The coach manipulates human robots to perform tricks in the hope of getting a touchdown.. so from that perspective it is fun. But as a spectator sport it's akin to watching people play solitaire on the internet.
I like baseball 'cause there are some good films out there showing it (re: Major League - NOT field of dreams - yuk!!)
Basketball is a bit random for my liking.
BUT .. Ice Hockey IS cool. Those guys are not pussies by any standards.. Where else can you find a sport where beating the s h i t out of an opponent is part of the game!! I'd like to see more of that on TV!!

| Sports that make no sense Posted: 6/3/2006 9:26:00 PM | | Actually, anyone here watch MXC (Most Extreme Challenge - or something of that nature)? Now, those are "sports" that make absolutely no sense WHATSOEVER!! Give you one example. A large paper mache boulder rolls down a hill and the contestant runs down this path, hoping to outrun this boulder or risk getting rolled over!!! It's funny as hell to watch though! | |

Soccer It takes 90mins to play a 90min game with a 15min halftime. Only game with 100% action, 100% of the time.
Although I cannot remember the exact details, there was a study done and the ball is only in play for something like 50 minutes during a match on average. It is the equivalent of a 60 minute game played over two hours as they do not stop the clock.

GOLF. just can't see any sport in hitting a little ball as far as you can: and then you try to find it again.
golf is the hardest and greatest sport to play. takes lots out of you to play it. takes a strong, creative, positive person to do well at it

| Horse racing !! Posted: 6/4/2006 6:04:57 PM | | Horses, and Wagering, NOW HERE is a sport that makes no sense. Yes i am a horse player, The likely hood that u will ever turn a profit from betting on horse Racing is ludacris, YET everyday there is millions bet on this sport of kings, There is racing forms sold, there is handicapping guides, there is people selling books on the subject, there is HOT TIPS, BUT someone forgot to inform the horse about this. Example prekness, Barboro, Anything can happen, And usually does. A horse just today won at belmont, The only problem HE had no rider on him when he crossed the finish line. | |

1. Rugby. Why not just put on some pads and call it "football"?
Well.. Rugby is ALREADY called football... Rugby Football. It was in fact the first sport to use the moniker, a few years before Association Football* and many decades before gridiron / american football took on the name
*(soccer as it soon became known - I don't know why there is a snobbery amongst the english by insisting that soccer always be known as football - it has been called soccer in the UK for years - so americans and canadians are certainly not in the wrong if they use the term)

| Horse racing !! Posted: 6/4/2006 9:12:09 PM | american televised sports, especially american Football.......is a game that has been crafted and fashioned to suit the needs of ADVERTIZERS and SPONSORS.......more than any other game, it is a sport that is comprised of continuous intermissions and gaps such that commercialism becomes paramount........this is why it takes 3 hours to play a 1 hour game!!!
So, when you watch a Football game you are watching about 2 hours of commercials that is interrupted by 1 hour's worth of intervaled play!

| Horse racing !! Posted: 6/5/2006 6:25:11 AM | nice call sum1reel....I read somewhere that in one of the games in the SuperBowl (Championship game) that of the 60 minutes of actual playing the actual play was only about 15 minutes. Sure you have to get the plays called, and line up, but each play lasts only 6-20 seconds and then they rest for another 45 seconds while the time is still running.
As for Sport that doesn't make any sense...Cricket, any sport that lasts 3 days couldn't they change it up so that the game is over in 1 day

They did. It's called one day cricket - which runs alongside the 5-day test system.
Cricket is an amazing game - but if you don't know about it, then there is no way I am going to be able to describe it to you.
More people play cricket in India alone than the global numbers for Gridion, Baseball and Ice Hockey combined..

| Sport's That Make No Sense Posted: 6/5/2006 7:01:17 AM | Dodgeball what's that all about,i managed to see a few min's of so called action on cable t.v and what a heap of sh it,if i had a 2 year daughter im sure she could throw the balls harder, they should be throwing metal balls at each other then it might just be worth watching...:) | |

| Sports that make no sense Posted: 6/5/2006 7:06:22 AM | Golf!! What the devil is going on there? Eagles, birdies, bogies etc
For a start there is far to much walking involved for my liking and the constant shouts of in the hole leave me disturbed!
If i had to walk around 18 holes carrying a bag of clubs i would be so exhausted i wouldnt be able to get up for 3 days.
PS I quite like a game of Crazy golf though!

That would liven things up a bit... "We'll be rrrrrrriiiiiiiiiiggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhtttttttttt back after these messages from our sponsors"

| Sports that make no sense Posted: 6/5/2006 8:25:41 AM | | ALthough I'm an avid poker player, I still can't believe they call it a sport. HOw 'bout this for the absolute WORST sport and one that defies explanation in it's name alone. Singles synchronized Swimming!! How can something be synchronized when only one person is doing it?!!!!! | |
|
| Sports that make no sense Posted: 6/5/2006 8:29:13 AM | How about the "Scripts Spelling Bee" that was being covered on ESPN....now that is going too far. Next thing you know they'll be calling the SATs a sport and they'll start broadcasting the top High School students writing their exams.
I'm with you on the synchronized swimming where there is only one person...however I love that they added the synchronized diving...now that is pretty cool

UK TV could do with a bit more buzz, so send us over some televisual honey and let us sup from the bee ourselves! It's got to be more fun than caber tossing (which is sometimes shown)

You can't knock spelling bees.
WTF...you can if they are trying to pass it off as a sport. Now put in on an educational channel or something but a Sports Channel...
Caber toss is more of a sport then some nerdy kid who's spelling words that probably 90% of people will never use in their life time
