In fact, if it hadn't been for the existence of that canadian spelling bee, I would never have used the word myself.
Toss on the other hand is a much more commonly used word.. as in "That american football.. it's a load of toss.. you switch it over to the darts please love." | |

Posted: 6/13/2006 5:45:28 PM | First of all, I'd like to thank all those previous for NOT mentioning bowling, that said, I guess someone will have an opinion. It is another sport you can do while having a smoke and a beer as someone else earlier was looking for other options to curling (add darts and golf to that list)
It's just nice to see some sports where the better you do, the more you make. They should do that with all sports, especially ones where players are way overpaid for what they do.
....and they need to take poker and the spelling bees off the sports channels, as much as I love watching poker, and seeing little kids cry over words that most of us will never hear again in our lifetime, they just are not sports. | |

I beg to differ.I came to America, but I will never stop watching the Soccer World Cup.I remember watching it ever since I was old enough to play with "dolls".
I know of many other immigrants who are fanatical about Football(soccer).

Wouldn't want our sports to cause you to do anything active like walking, would we? Listen up people........just because YOU do not understand a sport, that does not mean the activity is not a sport.
the definition of sport:
"Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.
A particular form of this activity.
An activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively.
An active pastime; recreation."
Golf would be a sport......cricket would be a sport........poker and auto racing would not. They are competitions of a sort, but not sports.
No reference to the level of physical exertion required to be a sport, thus golf and bowling and, yes, even curling would qualify. | |

how, why, and are you kiddin me..... i like to fish ,, but uh. anything you would normally do to feed yourself, NOT A SPORT.... 
recreational fishing maybe... but catching the biggest fish in a competition is a matter of which damn fish was the hungriest. and yes I enjoy fishing ----
So it's the "sport" in front of it that makes no sense to me..

Msg 57 Hey Timid just incase you read this even though you have left us now i used to be a talented soccer player untill a health problem cut my career short but i still think golf makes no sense to me and i still dont know what a birdie,boggie or eagle means!

I've played both football and rugby and preferred football because 1)I'm not a fast runner and 2)I felt football took more skill (throwing and catching). I have a tremendous amount of respect for rugby players though. And Aussie players are just nuts...couldn't pay me enough to play against them. LOL | |

every sport is good for at least a few people, and it makes them happy :) | |

Posted: 7/16/2006 11:03:22 AM | Jim Rome defines a "sport" as an athletic contest that can be actively defended by another human, ie putting your body in the way of something, be it a ball, puck or other human. Clearly. Bowling, chess, pinball, billiards, poker, skeet, curling, do not qualify. They are games, skills requiring hand/eye coordination, maybe just memory. And golf - any activity in which a severely overweight drunk senior and a 13 year old girl can compete professionally is NOT a sport! | |
