| Sports that make no sense Posted: 7/16/2006 2:58:24 PM | | It wasn't his logic - "Jim Rome defines a "sport" as an athletic contest that can be actively defended by another human, ie putting your body in the way of something, be it a ball, puck or other human". He's not Jim Rome. Start reading Pedro. And besides that, baseball uses a ball so therefore it WOULD be included in the description. You and I seem to be of different sides of almost every argument. The difference between us isn't always opinion, usually it's a matter of being open minded to other sports around the world. | |

Sailing isn't a sport. Sailing is a way to get somewhere. Riding the bus isn't a sport, why the f*** should sailing be a sport?

Several Aussie football players have come to the US to try and play American football. One or two have caught on(most notably Darrin Bennett of Melbourne). In the Nfl they are strictly kickers....no tackling, passing, catching...just kicking....why? Because they do not have the size speed or technical skill required. The violence with which these huge men hit one another is frightening. I have no doubt the men of Aussie football are tough, athletic competitors. But it is proven they are not tough enough for professional American football at the highest level.

Golf would be a sport......cricket would be a sport........poker and auto racing would not. They are competitions of a sort, but not sports.
No reference to the level of physical exertion required to be a sport, thus golf and bowling and, yes, even curling would qualify.
Um, you destroy your own arguement on this one. Your arguement is that there is no reference to the physical exertion required to be a sport, so lets try this.
Golf: Physical exertion-yes-Walking and swinging a club bowling: Physical Exertion-yes-walking and throwing a ball Curling: Physical Exertion-yes-walking, sliding, sweeping, and throwing a stone Auto Racing: Physical Exertion-yes-pushing foot on gas, controlling a half a ton of steel going at over 150 mph Poker: Physical Exertion-yes-moving chips and throwing card
Your right, there is no reference to the amount of physical exertion, so according to your arguemnent, these are also sports.

| Sports that make no sense Posted: 7/18/2006 6:34:14 AM | I think any physician would tell you that while walking can be considered a vigorous form of excercise, operating a foot pedal or pushing a pile of poker chips would not. Ever see an excercise machine designed to simulate pushing a pedal? Now perhaps the endurance necessary to drive a stock car 500 miles might qualify as physical exertion. That is worth some consideration. However I just have a problem w/ the car. Yes it is a tool much like a golf club or baseball bat. But those implements are directly powered by the user/athlete. Unless he is Fred Flintstone the racer does not power his vehicle himself. So while racing may require some athletic prowess to perform, the car still does all of the work. I stand by my original statement.
PS-If you seriously think pushing poker chips is physical exertion, you need to start excercising NOW!

| Sports that make no sense Posted: 7/18/2006 8:26:30 AM | | I think the point was that the defition of a sport says physical exertion, and says nothing about the level of physical exertion. That is what I was referring to. | |

| Sports that make no sense Posted: 7/18/2006 10:26:01 AM | styless,
i am a very open minded person, but do not blame me for not understanding american sports!
i DO respect all sports,HOWEVER,it really drives me mad hearing some people say that football is boring because of the low scoring (i have explained it a lot of times, even you did it too) that football players only dive (which is quite ridiculous and fake).
football boots have wooden/goma studs and the players do not wear padding so a player being kicked in the knee or any other part would be injured seriously.
i agree that sometimes dives are fake but most of them are not fake,if you got kicked in the knee or any other part suffering pain, your first reaction would be "diving" as when your finger gets hit by a hammer the first reaction is..........you know, lol
|
| Sports that make no sense Posted: 7/18/2006 10:44:28 AM | | I don't know where a lot of this is coming from. I don't blame you for not understanding American sports, but if you don't understand them then quite commenting on them like you do. I peronsally don't find football that boring. Much like watching baseball, it takes a trained eye to recognize the subtleties of the sport. My comments had absolutely nothing to do with diving or faking but moreso a reasoning as to why baseball would be included as a sport and the fact that you misquoted the previous individual as they were citing a source and not necessarily their own opinion. Please keep on topic Pedro. | |

| Sports that make no sense Posted: 8/2/2006 2:40:57 PM | Here is one….The sport of, betting on a sport, that you said makes no sense…..Now in “MY” opinion… Why would you bet on a sport that makes no $$$$$$ sense, and or (cents) $$$$$$ to you???? I feel that is just stupid ….But that is just “MY” opinion……
You all have a great day now....And keep smiling....

| Sports that make no sense Posted: 8/2/2006 5:46:15 PM | ^^^ I have to agree. I placed 500 bucks on a cricket match out of boredom india vs pakistan. Ridiculous game to bet on if you're a compulsive gambler!!! I thought it would be some four hour game.
I had to wait TWO days to see if I won.

Seriously, that must have been an exiting test match.. they normally last 5 days.
Pakistan are touring in England at the moment.. we just won the last test by some margin in 3 days which, after a summer of dodgy play is a big bonus for the Big Game this winter (the Ashes in Oz)...

| Sports that make no sense Posted: 8/2/2006 7:56:27 PM | 5 days? jesus I got lucky then. Yeah it was a in play "test match" whatever that is . ....never again. | |

I need to actually watch a game sometime I might get into it. I had no idea games would last that long. I kept picturing them just calling it a day and falling asleep on the field. (Being it was in a third world country)

| Sports that make no sense Posted: 8/5/2006 5:31:22 AM | Cricket is the real beautiful game, and the only one I am addicted to!
The only game which can last five days and still end in a draw... And still be rivetting to watch!

| Sports that make no sense Posted: 8/6/2006 7:11:21 AM | Yes, Soccer has to change the rules.
No scoring for entire games. Then a game with 0-1, wow, really exciting Go Team! Yeah!. In Soccer they basically run around for whatever time, I have never seen the point in watching a soccer game to the end.
Can't these guys score? Are they retards or something? I think they need to widen the net by about 50 feet to liven up the game.
In Hockey, the net is only a few feet and the pace is far better. Maybe if soccer made the field shorter it would speed things up and make it less of seeing if you can out endurance the competition. I see alot of rolling the ball back and forth and not enough striking.
I used to play soccer in B.C. on hard pack and gravel. Then it was fun because the stakes for going for it usually ended up with some roughing up on the hard pack.
Don't get me wrong, soccer is good exercise for the participants, but for me it's tedious spectator sport, not enough scoring. I'd rather watch World Cup Downhill and GS, ski racing that is.
|
| Sports that make no sense Posted: 8/6/2006 8:57:16 AM | Soccer/footall? NOT A PROPER SPORT????
No scoring for entire games makes it all that much more intense if you ask me.
Looking at something like basketball... thats not a sport... ITS A TURKEY SHOOT
Anything that makes the game harder to score points is right up there with downhill skiing for all I care. No margin for error and highly intense. One of the things I love about hockey. Screw up and ya lose. Just ask Daniel Alfredson. He knows, had to learn the hard way but he knows
