The Nail and Kneecap on Quinpool rd has really good food and the prices are great for the quantities that you get. Kind of an English style pub/restaurant. And the atmosphere is great if you want to just sit out on the patio or inside and have a drink with some good music in the background and really friendly staff. I work across from it so I go there for lunch quite a bit

Around the sydney/ northside area in cape breton there is boston pizza, pizza delight, don cherry's, junggle jim's, joe's warehouse and the bonnie prince which are all sports bars. They all have really good food, try the chicken parmesan at the bonnie and wings at don cherry's. Don cherry's and boston pizza are on the high pricey side, the other ones are slightly lower.

If your are looking for non-sports bars there is the italian vilage, smittys and cantone restrunt, bras dor view, jane's and lobster pound.

I was in Parrsboro for a weekend this Fall, and we ate at the Glooscap Restaurant. The food and the service was great.

Good Places to eat, and good places to take a date

There were a couple of places I didn't see mentioned that are just fabulous and a few, I think, misdescribed.

If you just want to "meet" someone over lunch as opposed to a date then there are tons of places. Just pick almost any diner and lunch restaurant downtown. Meeting outside by the library is always nice. I suppose my specialty is in dates (pre-arrangement with the possibility for love – OK, I'm not defining love here).

Janes on the common is uncommonly good for the price. You can get a meal for probably about $5 less than you would at someplace comparable downtown. The place seems to especially appeal to women given that I have gone in there some nights and been the only man in a nearly packed place. I really don't think there is any way to go wrong with a meal there.

Chives was mentioned a few time. It has its charms and if you get a table in the bank vault it could be exceptionally romantic. I wouldn't put it on par with Da Maurizio's by any stretch (but its better than the mediocre stuff Seven has been putting out). It might be comparable to a place with better food and a somewhat friendlier decor, Sweet Basil. This, again, is a restaurant that is very popular with women.

While I'm on Lower Water Street, O'Carroll's wasn't mentioned. While it does not have the "snugs" of The Old Triangle it has amazing food. You can either go in the very expensive and fancy resstaurant which is comparable to The Five Fishermen or in the pub. The great thing about it is that you can order the food either way to a certain extent. My favorite is to go to the pub for fish and chips (probably in the top 5 in the province behind Murphy's in Truro and competitive with Phil's on Quinpool - better than Purcell's Cove). After the meal you can order from the expensive restaurant's dessert menu that has everything you would expect.

Da Maurizio's and Il Mercato were both mentioned but people really need to try out Piccolo Mondo. The Ravioli there should be a controlled substance (all large pastas there are hand made) and the Tiramisu is excellent. They used to have an amazing Manicotti made with game hen but they had to switch to chicken.

On italian, Thomasino's is nice inexpensive place in the South End but they only have one pizza, The Ambrosia (you have to try it) that is competitive with Salvatore's in the hydrostone. That place has some of the best pizza in North America. I believe that it is the only place in Halifax, along with Da Maurizio's that makes the where to eat in Canada list every year. And, it is the lowest priced place on the list. Salvatore's has Sal's meatball hero, which is a sandwich I can only describe as something you would never eat on a date and never share with anyone. It is amazingly good and probably worth about 2000 calories.

There are a few other very good places, Deco, and Fid come to mind. Fid has probably the best chef in the city and can make you anything. Its a unique dining experience and not too expensive if you don't drink wine. The wine list can break you for the month though.

At the highest end you have Bish and Da Maurizio's. They are both great but not really worth the extra money over Deco or Piccolo Mondo (which in some ways is better).

Best wings, form my wing loving friends, Bearly's (best ribs too)
Best traditinoal bacon & egg breakfast, Spartan (that's the one across form the Oxford, not Ardmore, its down the street)
Best pizza - Salvatores
Best sandwich - Salvatores meatball here (close second might be the world's best club sandwich at the Italian Marker on Young)
Best veggies at a non veg place - Shoe Shop - Backstage - Diamonds

One final comment. It helps to know how to order. Even at the best places you can wind up with something boring or something you don't like. You need to know how to convince the server to say something other than "everything's good". That usually means everything is mediocre. Find out what people come back for again and again or what they absolutely rave about afterward. Most server's don't realize they are in NS and that the way of complaining is not coming back. So, they cannot tell what is bad.

I think it depends what kind of mood you want to set. The keg is good for long talks, and kind of a light mood. I like your fathers moustache also, it's good for a laid back relaxing feel, very casual. But I have to be honest, I like it when a guy plans ahead, and picks one out himself, gets reservations and all that jazz. I find it a pain in the ass when it's "wherever you want", "no, wherever you want, I dont' care". you get no where and it's good when a man takes charge once in awhile!!

The Cellar Bar and Grill is a great place, cozy atmosphere and wonderful food. I agree with thatblondegirl, it's nice when a MAN can make the decisions, but he must be considerate and find out what she doesn't like or have alergies.

I've got to say the Vines for a nice casual off-the-beaten-track type place. Great food, wine, and excellent service. In my books, it is worth the 20 minute drive from Halifax.

i have to say, halifax has lots of good places but you think picking up a good place is just good enough?

i always start my date with meeting over coffee ( timothy/second cup / starbucks). its pretty open place, helps to feel comfortable. after having coffee i throw surprise #1, lets go somewhere else and i endup for sushi @ Minato ( which i already figured out from conversation with coffee what she likes)

Minato is cheap but authentic restaurant for one of the best sushi in town. its a pleasant surprise for your date and later you can endup at FireSide, so far i would rate it #1 first date bar. looks classy, comfy still in budget. within a small budget you can give your date a best dating experience. and keep changing places keep her guessing whats next, whats next, ? lol, so later if you take her home, she wont be shocked. :)

1. Sat./Sun. brunch at Henry House in Halifax
2. Neighbour's Pub in Dartmouth (best wings)
3. Fireside in Halifax (make sure you have a martini)
4. Celtic Corner in Datmouth
5. Jamieson's in Cole Harbour (Ploughma's lunch)
6. The restaurant in Peggy's Cove (fish chowder and gingerbread)
7. Opa's Greek Restaurant in Halifax (anything on menu)
8. Fran's Chinese Restaurant in Dartmouth, below "new" bridge
9. Niche in Halifax (everything on menu is great!)
10. Old Triangle in Halifax - get the sweet potato fries and one of the many beers on tap; yum!

Sandra (Post 41) - is there a place in Canada one can get 'roo? I found it uncommon even in Australia (where it is, preposterously, mostly used for dog food) except in areas with high aboriginal populations (the Woolie's in Port Augusta was the only super in which I found roo filet and roo mince on a consistent basis). I absolutely love it - kind of a cross between pork and veal in consistency with just a bit of game to it (not as much as deer or moose). Lean, tender, low in fat and cholesterol, but not stringy or dry or tough as are many lean meats.

I've looked high and low for it here to no avail - there is one place in New England which has it but it's too much a PITA to get it across the border.

Help?

Also - for anyone into such things - ostrich and emu is also lovely for the same reasons. There used to be someone selling roasts and mince (ground or burger in our lexicon) in the Brewery Market but it seems no longer. Camel - same story, although I really don't think I'll find that here at all...........

I have to try a martini at the Fireside next time I'm not driving - for my dime, Ryan Duffy's still has the best in the city (double GG, medium dry, three olives thank you). Someone mentioned the Vines, I found it variable. I like doing brunch and heartily endorse Jane's as a prior poster did. There are no reservations but the line moves quickly, the coffee is bottomless and nobody gives you the bum's rush - and the food is superb. I like it especially as you can linger or cut it short depending on how the conversation is going (I generally catch up with friends there so others' mileage on a dating front may differ).

Il Mercato in Halifax is kind of the same story, although it can be noisy.

If you have an ethnic bent, the Ethiopian place on Quinpool is very good, very authentic. Be aware that dishes are communal and scooped up with your hands with the spongy bread, so it might not be an optimum first date.

Opa seems OK but a tad Canadianized.

I find chains and pizza/pasta joints a bit cheesy for a getting-to-know-you. Maybe for a tenth date but it seems a bit chintzy to me.

Guess this will be a last post for me but HTH.

I just tried Rocco's in Dartmouth - so good. The atmosphere is not what I'd call romantic, but the food more than makes up for it.

Da Maurizio in Halifax, Ducky's and Mackaskill's in the Dartmouth Ferry Terminal are also very good. They are expensive, but well worth a relaxing evening for a dinner date. The food at all three is great and the atmosphere is awesome.
