Actually the 10 commandments were created to eventually show man that he couldn't possibly follow them. However, thru Jesus, we can, because he followed the commandments perfectly.

oh barf. the idea that we are crappy sinners that are no good and can never do go was an idea introduced by the church in order to control the "flock" guilt is an amazing tool

The 10 commandments can also be seen the way I (and others, this is not an original thought but one that sure can make your life incredible) see them as :
THE 10 PROMISES

When we are honest with ourselves about what kind of people we want to be, and when we are living in harmony with the world, thanking God for all the goodness we are blessed with every day and when we are truly living the way our hearts want us to, GOD PROMISES us that
We shalt not covet our neighbours wife or things. We shalt feel no need to take the name of
God in vain. We shalt not kill, we shall not like, we shall honor God because he/she is the source of all life and love, etc, etc.
It's a pretty amazing interpretation.

Even though I am a Wiccan,
I do respect the one about coveting your
neighbor's Ass.
I think that it should extend to all domesticated animals
as well though.

I'm a bit passionate about the 10Cs. The Ten Commandments are the only part of the Bible God Himself wrote.

So says the bible. Personally, I believe Moses wrote them himself as a means of control.

I always had a problem with the 10th Commandment:

"Though shalt not covet."

Intelligently, why do you think that particular Commandment was implemented?

Something tells me it has a lot to do with keeping the classes divided. Basically, be thankful for your lot in life and don't wish you were rich like us -- for that's a sin. It all boils down to money and power.

The ten commandments from the muslim perspective:

1. Thou shalt not worship as God anyone but God (this includes the messenger Jesus, peace be upon him).

2. Thou shalt not worship idols (this includes crosses and images of humans or anything else; since an object can be inhabited by Satan making himself an unknown object of worship).

3. Thou shalt not invoke God's name other than to please God.

4. Thou shalt not break the Sabbath (muslims observe the Sabbath on Fridays).

5. Thou shalt not dishonor thy parents.

6. Thou shalt not kill.

7. Thou shalt not commit adultery (or other sexually immoral acts).

8. Thou shalt not steal.

9. Thou shalt not lie.

10. Thou shalt not covet what is not provided for you by God.

I really don't have a problem living my life by this very simple set of rules, since they are all of the "shalt not" variety. Injunctions NOT to do things are easy to follow. I'm not even close to perfect, and I can choose to follow the commandments and NOT do these things. Of course, if God commanded the breaking of one of these rules, God's command would take precedent; for example, God commands that we eat of the animals he has provided and allows us to eat, this requires killing them. There are way more than ten commandments, in both the Qur'an and the Old Testament (which the Qur'an follows). These are just basic common sense rules that anyone can easily follow, and represent the major sins against God.

The first commandment teaches us to focus on God with our thoughts and aspirations; the second forbids making anything more important than God; the third teaches us to respect God; the fourth dedicates to Him the seventh day of the week; the fifth teaches us to honor our parents and elders. The following four commandments admonish us to respect our neighbor's life, family, property and good reputation. Finally, the last commandment forbids envy and calls for purity of heart.

Just as we give our children boundaries and rules in order that life will go well for them, so did God give us these boundaries and rules in the 10 Commandments.

Jesus said, "If you love me, keep my Commandments." John 14:15

"Blessed are they that do His commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city." Revelation 22:14

"O that there were such an heart in them, that they would fear me, and keep all my commandments always, that it might be well with them, and with their children for ever!" Deuteronomy 5:29

"For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all." If you break even one commandment, you are guilty of breaking them all.
