read an interview with Clapton where he said he mixed Duane completely OUT of the thing at first... and then he was overcome with guilt and did the right thing. I guess he felt Duane blew him away or something... Funny how people perceive their own playing...

He also felt after Duane died that he was an indirect cause of both him and Jimi dying... he had a terrible guilt trip about it and that had something to do with the drug thing he fell into.

Delaney and Bonnie toured with Blind Faith in 1969. I saw them at the oakland coliseum arena. Blind Faith sounded great, but had no chemistry. Clapton and Winwood had played together before as "willie caboose and the trainmen" when they were VERY young. I think Winwood was like 13 or 14 or something. They did "I want to Know" and something else. It was a single.
I think Eric gets very emotional in his playing; at least he did in those days, and winwood just plays... keeps even tempo, pretty much self-contained and just plays within himself.... it showed that night on stage. It was like they were miles apart...but as I said: it SOUNDED great!

Here's a tasty bit of Clapton trivia that years later seems really funny / strange.

When Clapton 1st began singing he did so only because no one in the band could and he was so ashamed of his own vocal abilities he sang with his back to the audience !

It's definitely Cream, but he was kick-ass in John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers...as well as the Yardbirds.

Clapton playing was the coolest to me with Cream. Tales of Great Uslyless, and White Room were great songs when I heard them at 15 years old, and bought a guitar because of those songs. After these years I play those songs, so I remember why I picked up the guitar. Clapton made me grab the guitar because of the feel he puts into playing, and yardbirds too with the speeding up the tempos of old rthym and blues songs.

How can you pick a favorite? The guy has really had a tremendous body of work over the years. I love it all. I saw him in March. He had a couple of other guitar players in the band who were both good in their own right, but when Clapton took over the lead guitar, he showed who the master still is!

Clapton has definately been the man over the years. He hasn't exactly had a smooth road. An interesting biography has been written on his life. He had over a seven year heroin addiction that he overcame. He has survived the changes in music fads over the years. He also dealt with his son's death. The man keeps on wailing away with great songs and riffs. Slow Hand has an awesome box set collection that I had to own. I prefer his old stuff that is still played all the time. He puts on an awesome concert with style no doubt about it.

My first exposure to Eric Clapton was when he was with Cream. Gotta go with that as my favourite.

in a white room........

Really, this was the guy that Jimi revered. Who am I to disagree with HIM???

Cheers, Raven

Cream!

For those of you who don't know it, Bell Bottom Blues was written with George Harrison. Eric and George were like best friends, which is how Clapton ended up being lovers with Patti Harrison (Wonderful Tonight was written about Patti)

I actually dig Clapton's blues albums the most. (Betcha didn't think I knew how to rock n roll, I got the boogie woogie right down to my very soul)

I love the "Rainbow Concert"! Clapton, Townsead,Windwood, Wood, Gretch, Did I miss anyone? What a show! Clapton is on FIRE in his first show in two or more years. Right from the first note of "Layla", Clapton shows that he's still in control in a way few players can ever dream to play a guitar.

I'm with the Derek and the Dominoes crowd. I think it is the best, purest work Clapton ever did. Possibly because he was suffering mightly from what was then unrequited love for Patti. I can listen to it and still get unbelievable thrills from it.

He's done a lot of good, but never uniformly great, musical work since then.

Frankly, while I've enjoyed some of his recent recordings, I think he's lost a lot of the creative juice of his youth. He's playing and singing a lot of straight-on blues, but without much imagination.

In case any fans out there doubt my allegiance/love for Clapton, given my criticism of his later work, I'll tell you this: my son is named after him. So there!

Band - Derek and the Dominoes but his own songs as a solo artist have made an everlasting impression on me. Journeyman is still one of my all time favorite discs.

Latest word on Clapton is that he's working on new music with Robbie Robertson. That could be interesting if it is ever released.

This is kinda odd but the North Korean gov't has invited Clapton to play a show in their country. It would be a first for a western rock star. Maybe the "Dear Leader" is a fan. It might happen in 2009.

Derek and the Dominoes. What an incredible band! They were Exhibit A for sex, drugs, and rock and roll at it’s most intense! Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs is perhaps the greatest rock album ever. It was driven by breathtaking passion fueled by the unrequited love for a Beatle’s wife… a cornucopia of drug usage… blues-rock played with white boy R&B funkiness... a cameo appearance (but monster influence) from Duane Allman… and eventual death by drug abuse (Carl Radle), heroin addiction followed by alcoholism (E.C.), and murder/insanity/life in prison (Jim Gordon). All of this anchored by a rock superstar who had already attained legendary status by his mid-20's, yet sought anonymity because the music was more important to him than the trappings of stardom. That album took 2 years to top the charts since nobody knew who Derek was. By then, the band fractured part way through the recording of it's second album due to the byproducts of heavy drug usage (infighting, paranoia, and debilitation).

How do you top that?

His late 80’s touring bands were great (even though Phil Collins is a better drummer than a record producer), as were his recent touring bands (Derek Trucks, Abe Laboriel Jr., Chris Stainton, Abe Laboriel Jr., Willie Weeks, etc.).

Clapton is God.

Mayhall to 461 ocean Blvd. ..Eric is interesting great visonay or just ok, never reall warmed to D&D, his tone onthat album is brittle. To me after 74 he did nothing of interest, just another fat cat in a armani who lost his soul

The natural thought here is to say Cream, obviously. But I'll admit- I still very much favor his 1989 "Journeyman" album as one of his very best!
