I agree with all those who say DONT DO IT
What is sad, the people who DO know how bad it is an ddo feel bad about are so consumed by their selfish addiction they won't stop even if kids are around... see it all the time...

I have a friend who smokes, but when her son was born she started sticking her head out her patio door, or going right outside, she has never once smoked in the same house as her child! When she decided to move into her boyfriend's house, she implemented the rule no smoking in the house. He replyed with the fact that it was his house and he would smoke if he wanted to, she said that's fine we'll just move back out then! now everyone there goes outside to smoke! I was pretty proud of her!

It is my belief that existing CHILD ENDANGERMENT LAWS are ripe for enforcment with regard to smoking in the presence of a minor (up until age 18) due to sufficient scientific evidence relating to the health hazards of 2nd hand smoke.

So, I believe that it is only a matter of time before some parent gets handcuffed, booked, fingerprinted, their FELONY VIOLATOR mugshot taken, and the state agency performing the duties of a CHILD PROTECTIVE SERVICE takes all minor dependent children of the offender(s) into foster care because THERE IS A CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER to smoking in the presence of any third person; however, under existing statutues, only MINORS RECEIVE PROTECTED STATUS under the child endangerment laws.

I am sure there will be an outcry among the selfish of our society that parents have a right to smoke but I say their rights cease when another person's rights are also at stake.

I would support a law that requires FELONY VIOLATORS convicted of CHILD ENDANGERMENT to serve house arrest sentences, pay a fine that is equal to at least four times the annual expense of a two pack a day habit for a year, plus be required to undertake a court-ordered class on the health hazards of smoking and the clear and present danger of inhaling 2nd hand smoke, and serve a five year period of probation which includes as a component of probation, that the FELONY VIOLATOR cease smoking altogether while on probation.

Smokers used to ask if anyone would be offended before they lit up their smokes. Not anymore.

I also support state licenses to purchase and possess tobacco. The license would have an online verification bar code that could be swiped at the point of sale. If not "OKed" by return signal, the pending tobacco sale would be terminated and not delivered to the prospective purchaser. If the purchaser did not have a permit to purchase and possess, or if the purchaser's permit to purchase and possess tobacco products had been suspended or revoked by any court, there would be NO SALE.

Proceeds from the fees collected for the tobacco permits should go into a trust fund to be distributed to volunteer fire departments.

I suppose smokers have never seen the body of an infant burned to death in a home that burned because a smoker fell asleep while smoking.

I also believe that tossing a lit cigarette out of a moving car's window should be a fire code violation with moving violation points assessed against a smoker's driver's license.

So smoking around minors should not be debated as to whether it is right or not; it should be deliberated by a jury to assess how many years of confinment should be included in the sentencing package when FELONY VIOLATORS are convicted of CHILD ENDANGERMENT, who did there and then, at or near the time of the arrest, with malice aforethought, the Defendant charged in the indictment in the above entitled matter did willfully and feloniously introduce tobacco smoke into the atmosphere that a minor child under the age of eighteen years utilizes to breathe, in violation of the public laws of this state . . .

If that is your verdict, Madam Chairman of the Jury? So say you all?

Smoking around children is the most selfish, reckless, irresponsible act. This really bothers me when i see it. I actually believe it is abusive and should have some type of fine associated with. My neighbor packs her kids up in the car (including her infant child) and smokes with the window up. Disgusting. Both my children have asthma and I really have a beef with this issue.

I agree, I will not allow anyone to smoke around my daughter. Anyone (including my own mother) who is in my home for a visit that smokes is expected to do it outside. it is a non-negotiable rule. My child's health comes before anyone else's personal preferences.

I smoke and I quit the moment i found out I was pregnant and my son was still born with Chronic Brochial Asthma and this was not because I had smoked in the past but a gentic disorder in his dads family where noone smokes...however since I had my son I have never smoked around him or anyone who doesn't smoke. I live with my sister and she doesn't smoke so I have enough respect for her and the others in my life to go out side or chose not to have a smoke at all. Alot of the time I will go for days without one because I dont have the place or time to smoke and I am ok with that and yes people say well you could quit then however it is not that easy to do. But out of respect for my child, family and friends I think smokeing around children is wrong.

You should come here to see how almost everyone smokes day and night, through a very
humid kind of climate. They smoke a very bad tasting, bad smelling tobacco which they wrap
themselves and they smoke everywhere and almost the whole time. They don't care for
their babies or children at all. Most children caugh and caugh and they don't look healthy
at all.

Well, I'm going to be perfectly honest here. My son is 2 1/2. The first two years I did not smoke around him. Then I moved and on the airplane ride to where I live now, the airport in Atlanta had a smoking room. I was like "FINALLY! I get to smoke a cigarette after 13 hours of going without one." My son was in his stroller and I stood just right inside of the smoking room with my son in his stroller. After like 30 seconds...I started getting extreamly bothered and pushed his stroller just right outside of the entrance, but my hand was still on the handle of the stoller. People looked at me crazy when I had him in the room, then when I pushed him right outside of the entrance(not in the smoking room anymore)...I got even wierder looks. But nowadays....I do smoke around him sometimes. I'm not gonna lie to ya. But I do open windows or my door when I do...or I just do it in another room that he doesn't go in, with the door closed.

I'm sooo tired of hearing about 'the children'. Let's just put them in bubbles so they never have to experience reality. Oh wait, then they'd never grow up to be normal....who'd a thunk it?!

I smoke outside myself, and don't believe the crap that gets passed around about second hand smoke.... Imagine a smoker and a non-smoker who gets it second hand. Who has a greater concentration of smoke in their lungs? Duh, the smoker by about a million times. What does someone who is concerned about second hand smoke do when they're camping? I guess no campfires for them!

Second hand smoke is mostly hype- can't say that its NOT bad for you, but smoking IS a million times worse than second hand.

I don't smoke around my son, and have smoked outside for years, mostly because I don't like the way it yellows the walls, and makes the furniture and rooms smell....

How can you say second hand smoke is hype??
PLEASE! Think about it....all those cancer causing agents what disappear just because you inhale?? NOPE still there, and not any better for anyone else to breath in.

NO, IT ISN'T ABOUT THE KIDS! The kids of today are worthless slugs, generally speaking. They think the sun rises and sets for them. I've thought about it plenty!

ITs all in how your raised.
So if they take time to care about the kids they wont turn out self-centered when they get older!
Its about the kids!! Thats the point of this whole thread! Not to smoke around the kids! I feel smokers shouldnt smoke around non-smokers. They choose not to smoke so why should I harm them with my smoking??
Have a heart.

Hey, I don't smoke nor would I ever put kids in the care of people who do. My point is that I DO NOT believe it is a legal matter. People have the right to raise their own kids! Don't bother saying it's abuse. God, wish I was 25 again so I'd have all the answers.

but i have never smoked around my son or neices and nephews. i don't like smoking around other people kids either. it's not fair to them. what do you think?

Exactly!!! Its not fair and its selfish.I worked with kids for 17yrs and 1 thing I've seen is 4 major lifestyle mistakes of disrespect parents make are 1)having unmarried sex w/kids in the house. 2)smoking around kids 3)cursing to/around kids 4)drinking alcohol around kids or being drunk with their knowledge

@marathon - I appreciate your morals, really I do, however my former wife and I did have children out of wedlock AND THEN got married. However, there was an understanding that we were lifelong partners (well, I guess not so much).. So I can understand having CASUAL sex with numerous partners around your children.. not cool. As for drinking? I seldom drink.. My kids saw me tipsy two years ago and they thought I was funny.. So, not a miserable drunk am I..

Well, here's me.. Myx.. hi.. I smoke. I do not smoke in my house. I have a kid with athsma. I do not smoke in my car, same reason and more. Smoke is disgusting. I can't sleep in a smoked in house or a smoked in car.

@Myx.....I understand where you are comming from.I didn't use the term CASUAL sex because I and most likely you know of someone who seems to have a new "love" or "fiance" 1-3 times a year 1 of the most valuable lessons we can teach children is how to formulate solid healthy relationships.Kids learn more by observation/environment,if they see transient relationships how will they learn anything but disposable relationships(without outside help)? At least, we can make their journey to happiness easier not more difficult by setting good examples. My point is we make mistakes yes,but we must learn to do better...THAT is another great lesson for kids to pick up.At the end of the day parents often TALK of dying for their kids....but the simple action of not smoking around them? Not bringing people whom they are not reasonably sure they will spend their lives with into their beds(w/kids)?Not getting drunk/drinking in with kids around?Aren't those things alot easier to sacrafice than life?

I am NOT pointing a finger at you Myx,I understand where you're comming from,I believe you recongnize what I'm saying.I'm simply pointing out a few things in expounding on my previous post. These things have been shown to be true 1)children who come from families of smokers are much more likely to be come smokers themselves. 2)the same is true of alcohol
3)the same is true with those that come from "broken"(single parent) homes and most particular "transient lovers" 4)same is true for those who come from verbal abuse

I rarely smoke (2-4 a month). I bum one form my son's mom sometimes. I only smoke outside and am not worried about the second hand issue due to that. Now the other aspect.....my son will emulate what I do. Well, all I can say to that is there are going to be many things that "dad" can do that my son cannot and he better get used to that fact. There are many things many other (generally older) people can do, that he cannot. My parents smoked around me alot when I was young....that had nothing to due with me smoking a total of 4 or 5 years over the last 20. Infact it made me detest smoking for quite awhile.

One more thing....Quote:
"Main stream says second hand smoke is bad...."

If by "mainstream" you mean EVERY MEDICAL DOCTOR and EVERY STUDY EVER DONE ON THE SUBJECT, than you are right. It's not a theory or a study in progress whith no conclusive results....it is fact. It IS worse for the smoker because you get both the second hand and first hand smoke. But YOU do it by choice.

we hear this everywhere and i have got to say...no,we should'nt smoke around kids.i was a heavy smoker up untill january when i quit.i will admit i used to smoke around my kids and i hate myself for it.

yeah there is the issues of cancer but anyone can get it.its the other things, bad coughs, bad chests etc.whenever my children used to get a cough or a bad chest i used to say it was down to the weather,or whatever exuse i could come up with.sometimes it would have been but now i dont smoke i have noticed a improvement in there health.
im not gonna say im anti-smoking,cause im not.i just believe that if you do its best done away from kids.
