Here are the stats according to the National Center for Health Statisics: I have checked the ones that effect firefighters with higher risk than some.

Number of deaths for leading causes of death

Heart disease: 652,486 *** ( alot of heart related illness on top of this.)
Cancer: 553,888 *** ( several different kinds of cancers because of exposure to certain substances)
Stroke (cerebrovascular diseases): 150,074 *** ( stress of job )
Chronic lower respiratory diseases: 121,987 ***(Among other respiratory illnesses aggravated by smoke, debri and unknown substances and exposure causes.)
Accidents (unintentional injuries): 112,012 *** ( Burns, falls, collapses in structure fires, ect)
Diabetes: 73,138
Alzheimer's disease: 65,965
Influenza/Pneumonia: 59,664 ***( smoke exposure and other substances)
Nephritis, nephrotic syndrome, and nephrosis: 42,480
Septicemia: 33,373*** ( this can and does happen when injuries turn infectious, which in the case of burns..it sets in fast.)
I hope this clears up maybe what everyone thought was not true.

ok... i do dislike cops to a certain extent...
here's a scenario... im speeding to work or off work to pick up my kid from school hence my shift was just done... they catch me... and no i got no warning but a slap with 250 bucks ticket ... shit... so there goes that day's wage...

I mean i do understand they they are supposed to keep some order but personally... getting drugs off streets would be more usefull than catching a single mom speeding from work to pick up her kid..

I do respect them and admire the work they do... I just believe that letting go with a warning would be nice as well ... 3 times stopped all three times tickets... wtf....

I wonder what it's be like to date, marry a fireman? They go out the door, and heart in throat, you have to stand there... wonder if your gonna see them tonight at the dinner table?
Also, the hours must be irratic? From what I've seen on tv, they form a 'family' at their stations. So, whose their real family? The station or the one at home. I guess both. Having two families is cool. I bet all the wives know each other? And now with the 'firegurls' (jeannie lol) do we see husbands like like Mr Mom?

Well Ima it goes something like this: When I go out the door I think of them too..my son is a cadet at the place where I work ,so the deal between us is....we hug and say we love eachother whenever we are to go on a truck. So he leaves the house with me when the tone goes off. My other kids know the routine..and its much the same..be safe and I love you. I have their pictures inside my helmet. They are always first in my family order. WE make it a point to eat dinner together always..sometimes breakfast as well. The hours are irratic , so you live life to its fullest at each moment you find. Its quality time, quantity when you can. My fire family is much the same..I am there for them and they for me..you have to trust who is watching your back in an incident where lives are at stake. Both of my families are very dear to me..and the capacity to love and maintain all family is amazing even to me. We all cherish our families, look out for eachothers families, and respect eachother..its incredible...I am a single mom so I don't have a hubby at home to be mr mom so I do it all myself. I do have wonderful people in my life like tonight that will pick up my daughter from work when I am called for a fire run or a medical emergency. I consider myself very blessed..always in a state of learning , living, loving and giving. Sometimes life IS better than on TV...

I have the utmost respect for firefighters. I mean what a cool job... you help people. Period. They are actually there at the time of the incident to help, and don't show up sometime after the fact to "clean up".

The one firefighter that I knew was a great guy, a great hsuband to his wife, and a great father to his kids. And his kids were great too... the kind of kids you want your own children to hang out with.

My feelings about police on the otherhand are mixed. I can't say that I've ever had a bad experience with police... unless you count the fact that there is never a cop around when you need one.

The cops that I have known personally have been alright guys, to me, but they do have an elitist attitude that always rubbed me the wrong way and that attitude did nothing to reinforce their encouragement to join the force myself.

I figure that most people will appreciate firefighters, but not cops, mostly because of the nature of the professions. As I said above, firefighters help people. Cops however are required to "manage" people.

I'm a Volunteer Firefighter, that's all we have in my town. I'm a Corrections Officer as well. Firefighters always seem to be the "Angel" and Cops the "Devil". All in all cops deserve the respect for their training and help to the community as well. As stated above the rookie cops can be hardasses and a little gung-ho, but it almost seems that way with any job that has ranks. The older, wiser, and more time you have on a job tends to relax a person a bit. I've been ticketed over stupid stuff like tinted windows and loud exhaust but it's my own fault since I know it was illegal to tint my windows over a certain percentage and have an exhaust system over a certain decible(sp.). Have to look at it this way you give some people an inch and others take a mile. Honestly mutual respect will get you farther in the long run. It's also cool being a firefighter as far as the things you learn in training and helping. Both things are great occupations and volunteer work but you do see your share of sad and violent things which a person outside of them wouldn't see.

Amen Diamond....a few bad eggs can spoil the whole crate...and the attitudes towards them. I have met some really awesome law enforcement people in my area. My brother in law was a cop in New York and New Mexico...I loved his stories of walking the beats of Rye NY...We are all human and refine the ego as time goes on in any occupation...the ones that don't..it catches up with them soon enough...Be safe out there my brother of flame, may the angels watch your back...I am a paid on call Firefighter...remember 343!

Having been a volunteer firefighter for a few years and having worked as a security officer in a very busy hospital I've heard the varying comments of police officers, firefighters, and paramedics regarding each other. I wouldn't say that there is a "feud" so to speak. Keep in mind when the emergency crews are at the same calls it's generally for emergency occasions, so time is critical. Sometimes we get in each others ways which can make doing what needs to be done difficult or end up wasting a lot of time. Sometimes there will be a pile of police cars parked directly in front of a burning house that the firefighters need to get to, sometimes the firefighterscan tick cops off because some have occassionally been known to miss-use the green lights. Often the three will bicker about laziness amongst the other sides because there can be long periods of down time. In the end, there is a great deal of respect for each other. It's like any other job, there's always someone who has a gripe about something.

Now, that's my perspective from what I've seen and experinced first hand where I live. I would guess and say it's common in most places unless there's parks and parking lots full of axe wielding firefighters combating police offers with there batons, asps, and pepper spray?

As for the original question as to why police officers recieve less respect? It's their job to enforce the law, which means handing out traffic tickets, stopping groups of drunk kids etc.. Firefighters and paramedics for the mostpart don't have those sort of responsibilities, unless you don't have a smoke detector or are burning without a permit.

People tend to remember the negative things more so than the positive things.

Tell that to someone who has lost a friend or family member that could still be alive if the driver of the vehicle wasn't speeding. Did you honestly expect a warning on the 2nd and 3rd stop?

Most police officers don't like handing them out but they have to or they'd lose their jobs. Most of the ones I know would much prefer cleaning the streets of drug dealers and other undesirables.

I've had a few tickets myself from the police for outdated vehicle registration and other minor things. It sucked, I have many more important places that I need to put my money but I made the choice and got caught. I just learned from my mistakes the first time.

Jeanie,

I couldn't have said that better myself... I'm a single Mom too. Stay safe my sister.

** Understanding the family of the fire service**
The family is extended even beyond your own department. Jeanie and I could travel anywhere and stay at any firehouse or the home of a fellow firefighter no questions asked. Its just the way it works. Doors are always open to each other.

What kind of 'mate' does a fireman/woman want? Do they even wish for a wife/husband? Or are they into being bachlors. I wonder, if they are the types who want a LTR, or do they mess around on their SO's.
I have the feeling they are family types. I don't wish to bash officers, but I've heard their divorce rates are very high. What about firemen/woman.

I ask, because I had a chance to datge a fire chief, and I chickened out. Why? I didn't know what to expect.

We have alot of different types in our house..most are married happily, the single guys have a girl or they are gents when dating. I think only a few are rowdy and they are young yet..full of spirit. Pretty natural and timely for their age. I don't know of anyone in our house that messes around as there is great respect among eachother as well as our family members. Date the fire guy...hes probably a fine man with alot of heart. He would have to be to run a fire house and be what we strive to be everyday. We are all family types, will little rowdy brothers, sisters, kids, moms and dads...its awesome.

you attempted to. Oh, I am a retired Cop.

The main difference between cops and firefighters is that firefighters don't go on ego/power trips, they do not abuse some people that they come in contact with, they do not get offered or accept bribes from organized criminals, and they do not seem to lose focus of the "what & why" of their jobs.

I do generally respect the police and some of what they go through, but that is one occupation where "the bad ones really make it bad for the good ones".

Also, when choosing to be a firefighter, you are likely thinking of saving lives and "excitement". I don't think many newer cops are thinking ENTIRELY of saving lives when they sign up...

Our younger newbies have the ego going and the adrenaline...but as time goes on they refine it..temper it because there is no "I" in teamwork. We do our job as a team...its part of the growth process of a probie..they learn real quick its serious business..and either choose to stay in it for the long haul or move on. Its a great lesson in learning to embrace your limitations early in your career...most firefighters have it in their blood to be one..its amazing to hear how all of us got there...

Imagine the horrors that cops and firefighters must see on a daily basis. Child abuse, rape, domestic violence, death, murder, arson!!! If you get pulled over, its probably because you deserved to. I've been pulled over about 10 times in my life. I've only ever gotten 1 ticket. I always respected law enforcement/firefighters. Don't bash them, because the second you need them, they will be there for you. They are human, and put their pants on the same way you and I do. They risk their lives to make ours safer.

Actually, statistic shows that most of the people like and respect cops. And I know there are ***holess, and I've met them too. But you should also look from their point of view. Imagine that you had to deal with all the crap that cops have to deal on the daily bases, and what if today you had something happened to you that is worse than usual, and at the end of the shift you have some wise guy complaining to you that you did something that offended him, aren't you going to snap? I go to college of criminal justice, I've taken Police Science, and I know what cups go through, and they do try to hire only those that can control their anger, but thing happen. And in the end you have to admire them because they are the ones who will protect your sorry ass, even if they have to put their life on the line, even though they might know that you hate them.
