Hello dear,

I went cold turkey when i was 17 and havent smoked since. I just found it foul and bad and thats why I stopped. I imagine though its rough for you. I think one of best things I can suggest is to keep as active as physically possible during your withdrawal..ride a bike, do some walking and hiking in a natural area. Take up a yoga course. and make sure to eat well and drinks lots of orange juice and make sure to get all your vitamins preferably from natural sources. I like making vegetable soup with beans, tomato sauce, fresh tomatoes, garlic olive oil, onion, green or red pepper, italian seasoning. I think eating a little chocolate every day would be fine, as well as some nuts and fish and soy proteins. Drink lots of water. Spend time with friends and family. Do some volunteer work.
read "As a Man Thinketh" by James Allen. its at www.asamanthinketh.net. Read "Metaphysical Meditations" by Paramahansa Yogananda or any other spiritual book or scripture. Plant a Garden! May God Bless you abundantly!!!!!!

Hi MyDogAteMyWittyame... great to see you're hanging in there and that the taste and smell buds are coming back... I noticed that too about the bad breath....and thought it was just me. even my own breath tastes bad sometimes so i keep a stock of sugar free gum in my drawer... Im not drinking half as much coffee anymore either... doesnt taste as good as it used to... im definately eating and sleeping better. cant believe ive come so far this time and i dont have any inclination on smoking anymore... i dont really think of them anymore now... its almost as if Im forgetting about them.
But because i was tempted the last time I went out, im going to avoid that for a while... i didnt really go out a whole lot anyway so i wont miss it too much... gonna hit the shops this weekend and buy some new things, to mark the 1-month mark...

Just wanted to thank everyone for the help with quitting smoking - especially Jasper and Pablo, and Pablo's unnamed friend... but everybody who participated here as well. For those of you still thinking about quitting and who have already quit, or those who just need to try again, best of luck to you...

I think it took, I'm really an ex-smoker now... So pretty much done with the forums...

I've also found the woman I was looking for here... she's everything I was hoping to find in a woman. It's early yet, but we're exclusive while we see what this grows into. Soooo, I'm done with the dating side of POF too...

I'm about to go kamikaze my profile - so don't know if this message will survive that or not, guessing maybe not and that I'm just typing into a black hole here... But this is one great black hole to type into...

I am taking with me some new friends... and in return, I've brought in several new POF'ers as well by recommending this site to them. Hope all of you get the great outcome that I found here...

Thanks for everything POF and all you who pass through here...

PS. I don't even have a dog...

I spent a lot of time sleeping. A security blanket thing, I guess. Sleep in. Afternoon naps. Go to bed early. Gets you through the first few days.
And my oral-fixation replacement: Fisherman's Friends cough drops. Kind of a natural licorice taste. Don't be afraid to spit it out before its gone. I'd bite off quaters. Gives a nice blood-rush like nicotine does. And makes every thing you eat taste shittty, like smoking does.

good luck to MyDateAteMY.... nice to hear things have worked out so well. Might be a bit early yet to be saying that the smoking habbit has been conquered... Im gonna give it 3 months before I start saying that. even though i feel great and no longer even think of smoking, i still get the urges at times and know that i have to stay focussed.
we'll miss you but all the best.
im on 1 month today.... gonna buy some presents at the weekend for myself.... some new clothes maybe.

I dont know if this will help you but it did help me. I quit 10 yrs ago and never picked it up again. I quit cold turkey and found that if i did not drink coffee and pop that helped to diminish the desire for a smoke. Like most people a cig and coffee go hand in hand. I would drink hot chocolate instead and then juice instead of pop. And as crazy as it may sound i pretty much didnt talk on the phone for like a month. I knew if i got on the phone with friends i would want to smoke! Try to drop some of your habits temporarily until you feel secure enough that you wont smoke. Gum, candy, whatever you like. I ate lots of pickles,
and olives!!! I wish you well ,

Its also fun to be impulsive, with people who know you're trying to quit. When I'd get a strong urge while hanging out with friends or co-workers, Id say, "Be right back!" and go for a run around the block, sometimes in riding boots. Not that I'm a runner. I'd come back limping but the nic-fit was gone. Everyone one would laugh cause they'd know what I did and why.

remember your commitment....I think thats the biggest downfall.....not being really commited to it...everyone has different strategies...do a mental thing as well....

Remeber you are a nonsmoker....try thinking aobut saying that to those when they offer you a cigarette...MOre mental than physical...the physicall part doesnt last long...its the mental addiction thats hard.

Stillinlimbo~ love that advice! Will certainly try it....

I am on day 6 myself...and finding it extremely tough at the moment. Quit cold turkey on Monday morning...just woke up with the desire to a non smoker and it went relatively well all week. Ate tons (literally!) of celery to replace the craving...and kept busy and hung out with non smokers (my work colleagues were extrmely supportive).

But now its the w-e....GrrrRrrrrrrrRRrrrrrr~ and I am sooooOOOOooo craving one RIGHT NOW!

As you say...it is more mental than physical...I think I've gone past the physical addiction now...but mentally...aie...I am SOOOO in NEED!

WATER... simplybefree.... drink tons of it!!! Yeah sure you'll be running to the washroom quite a lot, but the water will help you flush out the nicoteen still in your system, plus it will help you curb the urge to eat more.

Hang in there girl...!!! Keep thinking about the positive reasons why you want to be smoke free. I am sure they outweigh the reasons to continue smoking.

Hold on, Simply!!! You can do it. You ARE stronger than the cravings and the cravings pass!! Don't forget, you are NOW a NONSMOKER! And don't forget how disappointed you'll be with yourself after making it 7 days without ciggies! Do you really wanna go through this all over again? Hell no! So be strong and go do something to distract yourself.

In support,
Pet Goop

Yes, just think of all the money you'll save. I quit on Dec. 15 2005 and have saved 7 packs a week, at least, for 21 weeks. I think I was paying $3.85 a pack so my savings are (drum roll please) at least, $565.95. Wow, I just saved myself a heck of a nice weekend getaway!!!

So glad to see you're still going strong pegoop!!!

I love being a non-smoker!!!

Grace Unto You And Peace,

When you visit a cold climate you wear clothes in a special way. That way is called

layering: one layer upon another. Why? Because when you go into warmer climates, you

can remove those layers which make you too too warm.

So it is with addictions, especially with smoking. You know nicotine, by itself, is a good

drug in moderation. It helps the heart. But when it is administered with smoke by

inhalation, it is cruddy.

Put these two facts together and....you have insights. The first insight is that you layer

your recovery from cigarette addiction with as many tools of recovery as possible:

Education: what classes and/or books on the culture of cigarette smoking are available

to you in your area? Substitution: what persons, places and things can you substitute

for the triggers which shoot off your addiction? What formal support groups can you join

at low cost or no cost [Nicotine Anonymous] to center yourself in safe territory?

When you don't reach your goal with your first effort, then you study the ways employed

in that try and improve on them to give you the edge. After all, you are dealing with a

chemical change in the brain which alters the neural-anatomy: the actual structure of

the flesh of the brain [it is really more fat than flesh]. Trying to stop the process let

alone reverse it is very very difficult. No wonder people don't get it right the first time.

Apercu! Apercu! "Grasp" as many of the recovery tools as possible. Utilize them at

depth. Chum [become friends with non-smokers with whom you can take "techniques"]

around.

You are not weak! You are not stupid! You are, in the words of the Vedes: worthy of

being greeted, "Namaste!" [I greet God in you!].

Agape, kiitos, shalom ja Xie Xie,

Don as "Tauno"

I would like to thank whoever it was that posted the whyquit website information. I spent ALOT of time reading the different articles about smoking and nicotine the bodies reaction to different things.

I quit smoking on Jan 1st, kinda, for 4 miserable months I put on patch after patch, and chewed gum after peice of gum. Even got to a point where I cheated every single weekend...... I had almost given up on the whole idea of quitting and just smoking until I read that website.

Tomorrow I will be 100% nicotine free for 2 weeks, and I have never felt better. My advice for those who want to quit, don't drag yoursleves through withdrawl using the gum or patch or whatever for weeks/months, just go cold turkey, its sucks for the first few days, but so worth just getting it OVER WITH. I mean i still get urges, but i can now control them as they are now only in my head, vs having a physical withdrawl.

Again, thank you.

Keep real busy do anything but nothing,it will get better and your body will reward you but it takes time and that time that it takes will be well worth the price.I mean years of your life, you are in control of your own destiny .So time to suck it up and take control.....

go for a jog when u get the urge, it is a good way to stimulate your cardiovascular system naturally. that is why u feel the way u do when u quit smoking. your body is used to the stimulating effects of nicotine. just jog and eat right. two weeks later you will be withdrawl free! (for the most part) the important thing is to continue moving in a direction that benefits a healthier life style. one day at a time. good luck!
