thanks dc, i quit the day after Christmas, and after my whooops last week with just one smoke i know and remember well the ugly feeling yucky darkside!
too many damn nasty chemicals that i am finally DONE, through, fini, kaput, etc.
NO MORE SMOKIE for ME!!!
i smoked off and on for 24 years; thats more than HALF MY LIFE:
and i am an asthmatic; wtf wasn't i thinking?!

thanks, DC, 'n you keep on bein a good guy, too!

my boss
(a smoker whom i've worked for since 2002)
today said to me, "i don't know HOW you did it!"
i replied, "it no longer was a choice; i was just plain sick of it!"

Congrats UV, give it awhile, your tastebuds come back, as does your appetite ( not a great thing, but great to taste the food you are eating, lol ), you will feel alot better in the long run, you might be a bit fatigued in the beginning as the nicotine does not give you that rush, but you will eventually get away from it. Find something to occupy yourself with...gum....ju-jubes,,,gummi bears, whatever... Congrats

WhooooooHooooooooooooo, Ultra, DC!!!! I'm still with ya on being smoke free!!!! Good for you for joining a gym, DC!!! I've been feeling the need to get more exercise lately too even though my job gives me quite a workout, which I love about it!

I DO think quitting smoking is all about self-control and mind over matter. I'm eating everything in sight too. Kinda scary! But I'm stepping on the scale a lot to be sure I'm not ballooning. I gotta go scavenge for some munchies. BBL.

i just saw this:
Smokers more likely to quit if decision is spontaneous Thu Jan 26, 7:01 PM ET
LONDON (Reuters) - If you really want to give up smoking then do it.

Research by British scientists shows that smokers who decide to quit immediately, without making plans about how or when, are more likely to succeed.

"Contrary to what experts had previously believed the idea that you have to plan your quit attempts ahead of time isn't necessarily true," said Robert West, a professor of psychology at University College London.

West and his colleague Taj Sohal questioned 1,900 current and ex-smokers in England about their efforts to kick the habit. They discovered that nearly half of all attempts to quit were spontaneous.

Smokers who decided and stopped immediately were also 50 to 60 percent more likely to succeed.

West, who reported the research in the British Medical Journal on Friday, said the findings do not imply that planned attempts to quit are counterproductive.

But the results suggest the state of mind and motivation of the smoker is important for how successful the attempt to quit will be.

West urged smokers who have not managed to quit to keep trying. "The number of times you have tried to quit in the past isn't related to how likely you are to succeed in the future. It's another roll of the dice," he added.

what do YOU think?!

Uvox.... I think that's BS! At least for me personnally... I've only succeeded quitting smoking when I took the time to plan it out and psych myself before my quite date.

Still smoke free and LOVING IT!!! I take a walk at lunch everyday it's been about over a month and half now... about a mile each day. Just that little walk makes me feel awesome.

try working out, get the blood flowing,, ease the tensions,,
im one too talk here eh!
i still smoke ,, quit last january 1st for 2mnths and went back,, quit probably

5 times last year,, plan on it soon,, i know the patch worked for me in the past

but it becomes a mind over matter issue i think,, and when you can take on new

habbits to over ride the old ones ,,mentally strong is the answer i think,, so feed

yourself good thoughts and if you ever want moral support ,, this is a good place to come

for when i come back from my holidays next month,, im quitting too,,, and i could use some

moral support here too,, for at times its hard,, i find i usualy drive with one burning even if im

not smoking it ehhehehee,,, bad habbit ,,especially the price of them now,, theres a million reasons to quit,, and the bottom line is we know its freakin bad for you,,,,

i was thinking of taking a stroll down the cancer ward of a local hospital to put the fear of death back into me ,, for us smokers seem to forget the life we are loosing by smoking,,
truely only kidding ourselves to releave a litle tension,, what s that,, im going to get right back into working out and get and desire the high on life free,, anyway good luck stay strong.....

i quit the day after Christmas.
at first didn't really feel anything i'd describe as a craving;
but some defintite nervousness.
i've had a backslide (with a cig one night...)
felt blah the next day and also felt some real tiredness too.
i'd say i had about a week that i felt "grey" or a down; but that passed.
now i have returned to my teen habit of nailbiting;
and eating too much in spurts, but
found diverting my attention in any way, getting up & moving,
excercise and/or a big glass of water helps a lot.
my eyes don't tear; i don't hack,
not an asthma attack...
no real hacking or hacking anything up;
i was kinda disappointed;
why didn't anything come up n outta my lungs?!

i feel best about knowing i quit and feeling easier to breathe.
and everone else?

I had been quitting on and off for most of 2005.... it wasn't until this past November when I got to see my dad in the hospital.

He first gone in at the last week of September because he had fluid in his lungs (85 years old and he has emphazima). The antibiotics administered to him ended up killing the natural bacteria we all have in our large intestine, and he developped what called "c-defficile" virus.

It was at the beginning of November when I got to see him the day before they decided to "go in". I had never seen so sick nor so close to death..... and he made me promise to quit smoking.

Sure they say if your going to quit smoking to do it for yourself. Up before that point I was quitting and starting up again whenever I got bored. After that promise given at the hospital... I decided to stay smoke free entirely, forever.

My last smoke was Jan. 8. I've been smoke-free for just over 3 weeks now. I suppose I'm not out of the woods, but I feel quite sure I've conquered the habit. There are many reasons I think I'll never pick up a ciggy again, but one of the biggest is that I don't want to endure the torture of having to quit again. I used Nicorette gum for a couple weeks then didn't even bother with that any longer. I still have occasional cravings, but I just ignore them. I don't feel any different physically, but I do emotionally. Inside I'm pretty excited that 1. I stopped; and 2. I kept the promise to myself that I'd stop; and 3. I no longer have to buy ciggies. It was costly and inconvenient; and 4. My nonsmoking status expands my dating pool! My appetite HAS increased, but I'm watching the scale very closely and if I over eat one day, I try to compensate by cutting back the next. So far it is working but a little bit nerve racking.

Hope this helps and gives you a bit of insight, Little Lady. I think the first 1-2 weeks are the hardest, then you gain strength just because you were strong enough to resist smoking the first couple weeks. I believe that when you're really ready to stop, it's not all that hard. You just do it!

I quit December 17th so it's been 6 weeks.
I used the patch and the first four weeks were the toughest.
I gained 5 lb's but started walking 3 miles 3-4 times a week.
I feel confident that I won't start again because when I walk by smokers I think, "I'm so glad that's not me anymore."
I love having my time back again.
I hate having my time dictated by anything or anyone, smoking was a bad offender of my need for freedom.
I had a bad day yesterday and thought, "I would love a cigarette right now," but it was not serious enough to make me get in my car and go get one. Instead I did a meditation and woke up in a much better mood this morning.
I still say to myself and my children, "I don't smoke, I don't smoke." But then, I'm a dork!!!
Good wishes to you all and congrats to all those who have stopped!!!

I wish someone could give me a "magic bullet" to help me quit! I bought a box of the patches back in August, and said as soon as I walked in the front door from my vacation in September, the patches were going on! It's now almost February, and the box is unopened.

Shoulder & LL:

I know this is something that most of us, including me, struggle with, but I'm going to say it regardless:

First, I DO believe you have to be ready to quit smoking. Bye that I mean, you have to want to quit smoking more than you want to continue smoking. But moreover, when you are ready, you have to make a promise to yourself and commit to it. You have to respect yourself enough to keep that promise to yourself and not disappoint yourself—much like a good friend would not want to disappoint you or make false promises.

This time when I quit, that's what my success was based upon. I kept remembering all the times I'd broken promises to myself for many things like changing my eating habits and losing weight, exercising, ceasing smoking and on and on... and then I thought about how crappy it made me feel when yet again I lacked the self respect and self esteem to keep those promises to myself. I was determined this time with this promise not to disappoint myself!

It IS hard to resist the cravings the first week or two, but I knew in my heart that those cravings for me were only physical addiction cravings. I no longer really enjoyed smoking and knew that if I succumbed to my cravings I'd be disappointed in myself and not really enjoy all involved with smoking other than feeding the physical addiction.

One other thing, I may have said this before, not sure, but when I made that commitment to quit, I told everyone I work with (all are nonsmokers). I did not tell my family because I knew they could push my buttons about it and drive me insane, but it helped to tell my coworkers because I knew they were watching and pulling for me, and every day I came to work they asked me if I was still smoke-free. I would have felt like a big loser if I couldn't have conquored it in front of them. They truly were a nicely selected support system for me and put a bit of pressure on me but not too much.

I hope this helps in some small way.

Wheeww..it's toughest thing next to natural child birth. I purchased bags of tootsie roll pops. The white stick out of my mouth simulated smoking and I brushed my teeth afterward because of the sugar. It helped get through the hard times. I never liked smoking after brushing. I bathed alot and repainted the inside of my house. I was amazed at the nicotine on the walls. I "smoked" many red tootsie roll pops..every time I see them today I laugh. I thought the first week was equal to sticking needles under my fingernails...but it does go away and you'll find more energy.

Actually, nicotine is odorless and colorless!
What you saw on your walls is TAR(YUCK!)! Too bad that vomiting emoticon isn't on here! It would be quite appropriate!
