For those of you that don't want to read it, here is the finale of a really long eulogy for the Flames.
Thus, it isn't with sadness, but with hope that we, the friends of the Calgary Flames, look into the future. We remain confident in Daryl Sutter's sunny disposition and indisputable financial acumen, and we know that many great deeds still lie before us as the Flames once again confirm the answer to that ancient and vital question: what is the difference between the Flames and a training bra?
A training bra, of course, has two cups.

| Go Calgary Flames we are Fans Posted: 5/23/2009 7:32:51 PM | | Figured some heads would roll after the disappointing playoff performance. Hopefully whoever comes in next will figure out how to have a 2 year plan to get somewhere so that there isn't this deja vu of getting out of the playoffs so darn early... | |
|
| Go Calgary Flames we are Fans Posted: 5/23/2009 9:10:20 PM | I'm only surprised because I figured they would wait until Brent Sutter was available from New Jersey. He has one year left on his contract. Maybe they have already arranged for something with Lamoriello... first-round draft pick for a coach?
But certainly Keenan could not get the job done. On paper, that team should have won the Northwest hands down. The post-trade deadline collapse was something the likes of which is rarely seen. The Flames had what... a 14-point lead March 1? You had to know SOMETHNG was going to happen... ESPECIALLY once Calgary GM Darryl Sutter announced, after they lost to Chicago, that there would be no major changes on the team. He's a terrible liar
|
| Go Calgary Flames we are Fans Posted: 5/24/2009 6:43:18 AM | Just be greatful the team didn't give him a fairer chance to prove himself, like perhaps a decade of failure. (hey, it's the Alberta way!) | |
|
| Go Calgary Flames we are Fans Posted: 5/24/2009 11:42:22 AM | I think the biggest difference between Calgary and Edmonton is that the Flames are much closer to being a contender just by finding the right coach. Here's hoping they don't

| Go Calgary Flames we are Fans Posted: 8/12/2009 8:45:57 PM | Any thoughts on Fleury's comeback attempt? Hate to ttot my own horn (OK no I don't) but that story was first broken here, by me, in MARCH!! (See post 1692) I'm thinking the Phoenix "angle" may get some press in about a week's time... unless Gretzky gets dumped as coach. | |
|
| Go Calgary Flames we are Fans Posted: 8/12/2009 9:53:19 PM | Well, one's an innie and one's an outie. Big difference.
Future hopes is far more attractive news than shattered dreams.
Heck, Gretz's failure'll likely still make the news here'n there one day.

| Go Calgary Flames we are Fans Posted: 9/18/2009 12:09:20 AM | So...who pissed in Dion's Corn Flakes? Geez man, it's only September. Maybe he's still thinking about the "sloppy seconds" comment.

| Go Calgary Flames we are Fans Posted: 9/18/2009 8:53:45 AM | He's jkust trying to play his way off the trading block Gotta say though... wow... what a hit | |
|
| Go Calgary Flames we are Fans Posted: 9/18/2009 11:37:36 AM | Yeah, no doubt.
Watched the hit a couple of times and, yes, it's "legal" but was it necessary? Kid had his head down trying to poke the puck past the defender that was already covering him. Dion came across the ice and closed the gap and then *WHAM! * he launches his entire body into him. Hope the kids ok.
|
| Go Calgary Flames we are Fans Posted: 9/18/2009 3:49:09 PM | I'll take a hit like that over a "drop the gloves at centre ice, remove your helmets, adjust your elbow pads, duke it out and then tap each other on the back at the end of it" fight any day.
On that note, the only thing not necessary about that fight was the melee after.
I'll tell you one thing... no more Islanders tried cutting across the blueline with their heads down that game. Mission accomplished for Phaneuf.
I've never liked the guy... but I'd love to have someone who can hit like that on the Oilers.

| Go Calgary Flames we are Fans Posted: 9/20/2009 2:10:06 PM | | Do the flames play the Rangers this year? If so...where?? THAT... will be a true test of what kind of player Phaneuf really is... | |
|
| Go Calgary Flames we are Fans Posted: 9/20/2009 2:22:27 PM | Does anyone know if Okposo is still seeing fish in the ice?
Incase anyone missed the license plate of the Mack Truck that hit him it read:
OTHTHRT
What a hit! Who cares if it is preseason! Everyone has to work for their spot on a roster. Dion had an off year last year by comparison to his previous years. Most jumped on him and called him a wash up!
Dion will be back this year, better than ever. Sutter coached him when he played for the Rebels and knows what he is capable of (on ice homicide) and will ensure that Dion will regain his old form.
This year will be a good year for the Flames. Preseason means nothing to this team. I have a feeling that they will finish in the top 5 for defensive teams this year and improve on the record they had last year.
This will be a very hard working team this year, should be fun.

Care to clarify that comment metaldog? What do the Rangers have that would test Phaneuf any more than any other team?

Here I will clarify that, he is refering to the comment made by avery last year I think it was that implied phaneuf's girl friend is his dumped ex! so yeah I like to see how phaneuf reacts next time he plays against him!
|
| Go Calgary Flames we are Fans Posted: 9/21/2009 9:41:41 AM | thanks... I'd forgotten about all that. Well, let me predict exactly how that will play out: Phaneuf will challenge Avery, Avery will wait until Phaneuf drops his gloves, then he'll skate away and Phaneuf will take an unsportsmanlike penalty. Either that or Phaneuf will get a hold of Avery, try throwing one punch and Avery will turtle like the coward he is. Whichever way it plays out, we will be able to watch it all unfold on national TV. It's the late game on Hockey Night in Canada, November 7. | |
|
| Go Calgary Flames we are Fans Posted: 9/25/2009 8:25:34 PM | | Huh! I kinda thought Fleury looked hungry and worth taking a chance on. (all things considered especially) Bye Theo | |
|
| Go Calgary Flames we are Fans Posted: 9/26/2009 11:48:52 AM | | I will be sure to watch the game on Nov. 7. It will be a biggie. Avery has been a'turtle' in the past, but, given the circumstances and how he got kicked off of Dallas for his immature remarks... and how the Rangers gave him yet another chance... I don't think he has any option but to fight. Phaneuf...well... it's a no brainer. His whole character is on the line. If they fight..and he wins...his play will be like his rookie year, if not better. On the other hand...if he fights and loses... he will take a big step backwards... It will be an interesting game. I wonder how the media will drum it up as the day approaches. I know they are licking their chops... | |
|
| Go Calgary Flames we are Fans Posted: 9/28/2009 2:42:44 PM | Theo's press conference today did not make a lot of sense. He said he will not pursue a spot on another team, because ... "I could not sign with another team," he said. "I retire a Calgary Flame." Uhhh... actually, Theo... no you don't. You weren't under contract with the Calgary Flames. That said, not that he has declared he won't seek employment elsewhere, I would be shocked if the Flames don't sign him to a one-game contract, for the home and season-opener Oct. 1 vs. Vancouver, so that he actually DOES retire as a Calgary Flame. It would be the classy thing for the organization to do. | |
|
| Go Calgary Flames we are Fans Posted: 9/29/2009 6:36:36 AM | Do I really see another Leaf fan? I agree with rbg-it would be a class act-will have to wait and see! Another McT fan here-dare I admit it! Should be an interesting season! | |
|
| Go Calgary Flames we are Fans Posted: 10/1/2009 1:49:12 PM | Tonight's game shold be a tough one!! Vancouver and Calgary have almost, I say almost, the same type of rivalry as with our northern counterparts!!
As for Theo, he got his press coverage, and the fact that he got to try out as a free agent in the Calgary system does in fact by the rules of the game make it so he retires as a Flame, in his mind and a few others, tho it may not be the legal aspect. The Flames signing him for 1 game and release him, would never happen, especially with both Sutters at the helm.
Theo showed he could still play, and if the dollar value was there he could sign with another team, but at his age unlikely, he was never a Gordie H, Bobby H just one of those little h*llion's that was always a thorn in someones side

he was never a Gordie H, Bobby H Maybe not, but as much as he used to drive me nuts sometimes, it was awfully impressive how much heart had somehow been shoe-horned into such a small package. He earned my respect, grudgingly.
|
| Go Calgary Flames we are Fans Posted: 10/1/2009 6:40:16 PM | | I read that they will retire his number sometime soon, and that there are still options open within the Flames' organization. | |
