^^^ MEOW there Coyote,....Speaking of BAD FORM??? seems you'll have to give a whipping with a wet noodle to many fishies as ancient threads are constantly being revived around here.
Must have something to do with the fact that the new threads are so trivial.
You managed to slam a group of people who have no control over choosing their condition either....... nice.

I don't think the poster suggested at all that he feels he is superior,... just perhaps he's actually a tad smarter since these days he has more available money in his pocket since it isn't going up in smoke on gas money.
SMRT cars are just that! I still want one but mine has to still come with the key on the back
Good points you made Bralda-him.

I've heard that they don't last as long as the more traditional cars we are used to, therefore an owner would have to buy another one sooner than if they were driving another model. So if you're buying one for environmental reasons you're not doing the environment any good - just the economy.

Also heard that the batteries wear out quickly and that they are made in an overseas country (somewhere in Asia) which sends the new batteries by air to the UK, which in turn sends it to your home town by air. So again you're not really doing the environment any favors - that one battery earns frequent flyer points before it even gets under the hood of your car.

^^^ mustabee Uncle Sam
didn't he kill the 200mile a gallon carburetor inventor???

Looks to me (tho I do like the Smart) like there is no end to ignorance. We are sold the expensive green machines and buy them at their outrageous cost cuz we are made feel guilty and /or we are too stupid to figure out that we'll hardly ever get our money back in gas saving, cuz a s soon as enough suckers have bought them the price goes up, SEE DIESEL

Lert's face it people, we are unfortunately stuck

Sure going green is terrific, I 'm all for it and I'm convinced we do have the technology to do it may not be perfect, but neither were the first cars LOL. Reality is it ain't happening as fast as it really should, isn't it?

I think they are cute... just not very practical for me.
I tease the kids all the time that I want a lil 2 seater, a sportscar and they shout back at me, 'Where would we sit?'

I would consider buying one for my daughters in a few years, for light commuting.
I would not feel safe on the highway with such a small car. Imagine a 18 wheeler driving alongside you and the car vibrating and not being able to hold its ground.
A mid-size car shakes, imagine a shoebox car.

I would consider an electric car or a hybrid that would be spacious enough for 4 of us and a medium to big size dog, we need legroom and to be comfortable for long trips.

^^^ rose you just gotta stop the "wholelotta shakin" with the 18wheeler guys
that's almost as bad as the cell phones while driving

actually the smart is fairly safe, certainly not built as a highway car, but I've seen plenty on the Autobahn and driven one there, cruising around 120, they seemed just fine, but certainly not a sports racer

3,500 euro's
110kph!

it runs on compressed air, it took ten years to design by a formula 1 race car designer.

Some people have referred to the Smart being like an enclosed motorcycle,

and others have commented on the effect of slamming into a Crown Vic, or anything larger,

and I realized,

with the INSTANT DECELERATION, trapped in something that has almost NO VELOCITY,

HELMETS should be MANDATORY !

Sure, the friggin thing might not CRUSH in an accident, but your brain would be JELLO.

PS... The Test Crash Dummies don't have brains, and neither do their crash mannequins.

Bad form Dude

Resurecting a 5 year old thread so you can wax poetic about your toy car is sad...

Not as sad as you epilepsy helmet , but close

I am glad that you can afford to fill your car with gas and that it makes you feel somehow morally superior to everyone else.

Good for you I am glad that yourself could find something to belive in

Don Quixote

I don't know about you, but this was a thread about Smart cars and I guess I just am a little over zealous about mine. SORRRRY! for searching for an existing thread and not creating a redundant one. :P
And think you for the comment about my helmet. I take it you missed my mountain bike in the background? It's the law up here to where them....and yellow is the most visible color so I avoid getting hit by them pesky SUV's

I do enjoy not having to fill the air with needlessly waited fuel fumes thank you very much.

How long will a car last? Until it rusts out? until you have to replace a major part? Until you crash it? The body is plastic and steel, and it has very few parts. And they have a 4.5 out of 5 star crash rating.
Smart cars are made out of recycled materials and are themselves mostly recyclable. See link.

Weird as the EV model is not even available on the EU market, let alone the NA market, I wonder where you got your info?
Yes batteries only last about 5 to 10 years, but most now can at least in part be recycled and or reprocessed.
And just so you know, my car was not flown here, it came on a ship and I paid about $1200 in shipping/pdi and I'm sure they had at least 40 in that container ...hahah

You may want to have your car checked, as it's not supposed to vibrate when you drive it!!
I have no problems driving mine on big roads with big trucks around. The same with my 93 Kawasaki Ninja. it's half the weight of my car and it's just fine on the road.
It's the dam wind that you have to worry about, and it's not that bad.

The Smart and EV's are not meant for everyone! They are meant for the working guy/girl with no kids or a household with 2 cars. It was meant for the person that drives the same rout day in, day out, back and fourth into work and back for years on end.
It is for the many people that sit in traffic for hours going about 5kph. Do you really drive more than 50km to work one way?
If it wont work for you, then don't buy it, but those of us that CAN and will use it, should have the opportunity and choice to do so.

We have a Smart here on display that rear ended a Honda Civic that was stalled on the Trans Canada and the Smart hit it doing about 90kph, The driver of the Smart was unhurt and assisted emeargency crews when they arrived, as well, the Smart car was barely damaged compared to the Civic. If you are in Victoria, feel free to stop by Three Point Motors at 2546 Government Street.

Two people going to work with briefcases eh? Do you take a 500lb cow with you when you go to work? I can fit plenty in a Smart, I had 264 cans of pop 3 boxes of candy bars and 160 bags of 50g chips *Costco run for a friend* I can email you pic's upon request. I also had 5 full desktop computer systems in there at one time. And I once drove with 20 extra large pizzas in just the back alone and still had the plenty of room left. Sorry only have pic's of the costo run.

This is a nice, yet over the edge shopping trip, worth a look though http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NkjZtfgqC2w&feature=related

Oh and don't drive any non electric car indoors! I'm sure that was a closed course and it was a professional driver...haha

If you need more room you can get one of these http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cI9NKZXXJeM

My friend Steve sat in it once and he's 6'3" and he had plenty of room. I'm 6' and I love it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TeHeFmCNSPY Ok that’s a stretch but it's bigger than you think.

as ancient threads are constantly being revived around here.

That would be because it is Verboten to dare to start a thread if anybody in the history of humans has ever started another thread on the same topic.

To the topic: smart cars are so cute! I have to resist patting them on the roof every time I see them. I'd buy one in a flash but my dear little Civic shows no sign of giving up its sturdy little Honda heart so maybe I'll buy the fourth or fifth generation Smart car in a decade or so.

I don't really want to even comment on that last post by artismylife....but I'm board.

They already come stock with a turbo and its all been done. One even drag raced a Ferrari and won.

Granted this is just a smart car body and the rest is all custom and after market.

Not to mention all this is the opposite of what smart stands for and is rather sad.

I have had my share of flaming for redundant postings here and on other forums now I just search and post.

I was going to buy one last year when I was car shopping; I test drove one and they run real nice but the lack of storage really bothered me. And yea, while it is costing me $50 to fill up my Matrix, I am able to move things or pile people into the back. Just last week I bought a portable dishwasher; wouldn't have been able to get it into the Smart if I had had one.

I think they're only great for people who have a car but want something cheap on fuel for back and forth to work.

I would never buy one! Would you?

NOPE, Never, not in a million years, they maybe small, and they maybe real easy on gas, but, how safe are they actually, unless the car is built around a roll cage, which I highly doubt, because, what manufacture wants to spend that kind of money to build a car, of that size.

Further more, building a car that size around a roll cage, would push the price up even more, which would increase the sales cost of the vehicle.

So, the manufcture wants t build that kind of car at the least cost, and building it, so that it barely meet safety specs.

So, all in all, it may withstand the crash of another similar sized vehicle, but, there are all kinds of vehicles out on the reoad, including semi-trailer trucks.

Can you imagine the damage that the semi-trailer truck would do to a car that size, as well as kill the passenger(s) in a head on collision. It would hardly do any damage to the semi-trailer, but the Smart Car would be a write-off, unlest Iky-Biky has their way, of rebulding a written off vehicle, and selling it to un-suspecting customers like they have been doing for such a long time, that has just been publisized lately.

However, back on topic, would I buy a Smart Car?

NEVER, to small, not worth risking my life to drive, and not as comfortable, and safe riding as my 4,000 pound plus DAK.

So, therefore if the manufactures are going to make a car that small, as the Smart Car, then they should ONLY be licensed for in town use, ONLY, and definately not out on the highway.

Get them out on the highway, and they can become a death trap.

Any car, truck, or motorcycle is only as safe as the driver. I doubt your 4,000+ truck would stand up to a semi, you are toast either way.

Also Smart cars ARE built around roll cage technology, and stand up well for there size. Now when people talk about safety, they say "when I get into an accident" do you drive down the road looking for accidents?

This car was made to drive from home to work and around the city and not have the disadvantages of a scooter in the winter or on the short freeways. It is an awesome little car and if you don't like it, fine, but at lease read up on it or drive it before bashing it.

Oh and it does have storage space, here is a link to the pic I talked about earlier http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c378/Bralda-him/SSPX0058.jpg Smart car 1 Costco 0

Back in early 2007 it cost me $18 to fill up, now it's $27 but I still get about 400km to a tank, so I'm not complaining.

I doubt your 4,000+ truck would stand up to a semi, you are toast either way.

Maybe not, however, given the size, weight, and build of the truck, at least I would have a better chance of at least, withstanding a crash better then a Smart Car would.

Further mre, it would take a lot more to crumble, my 4,000 pound plus truck, then it would ake to crumble a what, maybe 1,500 pound Smart Car.

NO, I will still take my DAK, over a Smart Car, ANYTIME, and ANYDAY, even if it means having at least the remotest chance of survivng, I will STILL take may DAK.
