Diets too high in animal protein and low in vegetable protein: Meat and other high protein foods leave an acid residue in the blood that leads to bone dissolution. To neutralize this acid load, the body calls on its stores of calcium to provide basic calcium salts. Studies show that people with a high animal protein intake can develop a negative calcium balance, regardless of how much calcium is consumed. An important study demonstrated an increased bone loss and risk of hip fracture in those with a higher ratio of animal protein to vegetable protein. The researchers concluded that an increase in vegetable protein and a decrease in animal protein may decrease the risk of hip fractures in the elderly.1 The recommendations are clear: green vegetables, beans, nuts, and seeds should be the major source of protein. It is important to note that later in life (after age 70), it is crucial to pay more attention to protein intake. Whatever. Everyone is different. I live on meat...all types of it, mainly Salmon, Lean Red and Chicken , and salads. Not only has my body fat gone down but taking in 200 to 300 G of protein a day I am finally starting to build mass and look pretty good. So, for those of you who think meat is so bad, stick these "studies" where the sun does not shine and keep eating all the shitty carbs you think are healthy. I suppose the carb addicts diets work for some, but really, are they getting anywhere? All I see are the same people claiming to go to the gym all the time, and on a "diet" who still are friggen Manatees and look the same. We will all die of something. At least if the meat diet kills me I will look hot in a casket. See what I am saying?? We can find something wrong with any diet. I live a lifestyle. I eat until satisfied. I work out like a MoFo and I take care of my body. I still have a little ways to go, but the changes I have made have actually saved my life. More ways than one. When I frist started to eat this way after my 2nd accident , I lost 53 pounds of fat in about 46 days. So if some people would dicipline themselves and actually do something about it and try living on meat, perhaps they would see results. No, they keep eating processed low fat crap and probably do not break a sweat in the gym. I see it daily. I will NEVER live like that.

I have changed my diet somewhat where I am taking in more protein and almost no carbs at all. So far this week, my bodyfat went down 2% and lost 2 pounds, totaling 73 pounds. I did, however, have to lower the weight and bump up the reps. This shocked my body into burning more fat because I did hit a plateau. The carbs that I do take in are in the veggies and the net carbs that are in the shakes.

I take a fast digesting (whey) protein at least an hour or so before workouts and post workout. At night, I drink a slow digesting protein (casein) because your muscles become catabolic during sleep since you are, of course, not eating and it is in a fasting state. Other protein sources are from lean meats as well as red meat also (this in moderation). I am a person that hardly has an appetite, hard to believe since I was almost 200 pounds. It is hard to make myself eat 5-6 times a day but I do it but small portions. I have done this since I can remember, I just don't have the appetite to eat even small portions. But it did me a lot of good.

I would say that I take in 200 grams of protein, more or less, a day.

hi... our protein needs are far lower than recommended because they put in a large room for error... raw nuts and seeds will remain the best non animal source for protein ..cooked meat is actually a poor source of protein and it does weaken bones and cause heart issues/kidney issues etc if consumed in great quantities... a meat eater should make sure to get a lot of raw fruits and veggies for the amino acids that they are cooking away in their meat sources.. blessings for balance and health

Meat ages you and too much meat is hard on your kidneys. Body builders have a shorter life span than a healthy person. It is because they consume was too much protein. Eat your meat I could careless. I have lost 7 lbs in 3 days without physical exercise.
Eating 5 to 6 meals is the way to lose weight. I know a few people started eating asian food and they lost weight and they eat plenty of carbs :P

The title of the thread is misleading though. I was hoping to find out how "women protein" would help me lose weight.

How much "women protein" I need per day, how to properly prepare "women protein", where to find the best cuts of "women protein", and what not.

For those that go high protein, keep your water intake high. Normally, you should keep the water intake high anyways which will aid in fat loss and most importantly avoiding dehydration. If one is dramatically increasing their protein intake, chances are their carb intake will lower...in that case, water weight may also be lost as the body needs to store a few ounces of water to process carbs (cant remember the ratio at the moment of how much water is needed for every gram of carbs). So..stay hydrated and be healthy.

Protein is beyond necessary for muscle growth. Some of us who pound out weights and diet for months are looking for muscular results and you get it from animal protein. Sure, you have some stick figures who claim to be "vegan" or "vegetarian" bodybuilders. They still look hungry and starving to me. But I suppose it is better to see that than obese. I just cannot imagine trying to build muscle on NO meat. I work to hard in the gym to not have a lot of muscle. To each his or her own, I know. But still, people will NOT get the same results they do on animal protein. That alone is just common sense. I have seen a lot of those "before and after" deals for the so called vegans...not my cup of tea at all. Sorry!!! Animal protein and supplements build muscle...and keep us lean. Not a bunch of vegetables only and nasty soy carb ridden crap.There are a lot of skinny people who still have a high body fat percentage. The exercise is great...but it is mainly about the nutrition. And if you do not eat meat, gains will not be good at all.

I agree grains are not good..too acidic...but not as acidic as meat..

I am vegan, mostly raw vegan no grains!!

A cup of Quinoa or wild rice a few times a week, other than that RAW FOOD!!

I am not a SKINNY veg...although I know what you mean, I have seen many..

Building muscle is NOT about eating protein. hell, everyone would have bodies like body builders if it were....
instead, all the protein 'they' are eating is leading to early death...
Heart disease.
Colon Cancer
Stroke...
To many to list...

Building muscle is about POUNDING out the weights...
You can eat as much protein as you want...don't pick up a weight....no MUSCLE!

Not everyone would have great bodies or look like body builders ..there is a lot more involved to that look than simply eating.....the average person overeats and do not know how to limit fat intake while still eating protein. People who actually bodybuild or lift weights in conjunction with eating animal protein have a much different intake then the average person who probably over eats on portions, also adds MANY carbs of bread and bad starch with it, and who do not know gym dicipline.Plenty of people eat animal protein, they simply do not know what a portion size is or when and how to select the leaner stuff. No offense, to me you look way to skinny and not muscular...more like a runner maybe. And diet is definatly a factor in that. My heatlh is fine as well, I do get my liver and cholestorol (which has actully lowered) checked all the time. I am also built much stockier and have the endomorh thing going on. But to each his or her own. I just have personally found the vegan/vegetarian thing to be lacking in many areas...but some people dig it. I still beg to differ on eating protein leading people to death, but I have yet to find one vegan or vegetarian who never says that. They all have that tree hugging skinny mantality and are missing out on some tasty red meat. I will not even hang out with them. All the ones I have met say the exact same thing and have all these "lectures" about eating meat. I hvae had a few in public be down right rude and nut cases. Sure we all have our opinions but to confront someone in a restaraunt about what meat is doing to my body is stupid. I would not in person ever do that. In the forums, yes. because we are here to debate. Vegans and vegetarians act like basket cases most of the time. Not all, but most. Yeah so maybe they can run. If that is what they like, great. I still say free weights and looking muscular and eating better food is the way to live. We are all cut out for different things. I choose to look built, not starving.

Damn. No 'offense' to the tree huggers but I can't imagine myself eating anything without a piece of meat be it red, white, or burned. Sister Mess is right, people can get down right nasty and I guess those are the people who deprive their selves of the tasty proteins out there. I think I would go mad too if I lived on just nuts, berries, and leafy greens.

But for being a vegen for 18 years, you look like anyone else who does consume animal proteins and watches portion size but no exercise what so ever. Add some animals proteins besides soy proteins that you are consuming and lifting weights and your arms can get definition. Your arms look like they have no muscle tone.

An early death? Stay away from the department stores during a huge sale, don't consume alcohol, take a vacation to de-stress, and don't wear high heels unless you have experience walking in them.

Building muscle is about eating protein. Lifting weights causes trauma to the muscle. Proteins help to repair and build the muscle. That process all happens when we sleep.

Genetic makeup will ultimately be the final determination factor.

Um, I don't see any references to peer-reviewed journals, any reference to any source I'd call scientific.
