Interesting linguatic the way you stereotype...... I have had my tat since I was 13 ..... I am an older woman and when I got my tat I was neither a biker or a prostitute... was I conformist back then not hardly........ As far as being old and having tats and it not being okay... I would be lying if I said I hadn't questioned it over the years at times but I have to say even if I am an "old Lady" I still get very complimentary comments when I am at the beach ... If you want to see it anyone let me know lol...... By the way if you were to see me at work or on the streets those who catagorize a tattooed person would not pick me out as a person with a tat .... it surprises most when they see it...... I say do what you feel no matter if it is to ink or not to ink but don't judge those in either direction...(smile) to all

Remember those weird clothes that were the fashion for women in the 80s? Leggings, spandex, shoulder pads. And how women had all that high hair? Guess what? It was a FAD. You can always redo your hair and buy a new wardrobe. With tats, your stuck with them. They won't be the fad forever.

Bike man, wrong yet again. Tattoo's can be removed with laser. With that being said..not everyone would be able to afford it. Fad? Hmmm..I wonder if they thought it was a fad 2,000 years ago? If you don't like em, don't get one and don't date someone who has one pretty simple (just as I could never date anyone in bike shorts YIKES!).

Bike man, wrong yet again.
wow what am i wrong about? that you can't get rid of them? of course you can...at a price. a good investment might be in companies that invent a cheap tattoo removal technique when the fad finally wears out. they are a fad. when i was in my 20s, hardly anyone had tats, certainly very few women. tats are a fad in the sense that there is a way higher percentage of people today with them, compared to the any other era, including 2000 years ago.

never said i liked or disliked them, just that i recognized the fad, and i'm certainly not recommending that people start wearing bike shorts everywhere. stay on the thread topic. personally i can date women with tats--it's hard to find a woman today who isn't inked, and ink-free skin on a lady is not a dating requirement for me.

"You are stuck with them" written in your above statement. Actually, 2,000 years ago the Nubians tattoo'd, the Pazyryk, the Egyptians most of Eastern Europe, Africa, Asia and the Mori (to name just a few). I will stay on subject as you never know when the TOPIC THREAD police will rear their ugly head (s).

Well, the laser-removed tattoos certainly don't leave your skin looking like it did before and what would be the purpose of removing them if a person feels they should get them in the first place, unless it was a "fad" or poor decision?

I find it interesting that the poster asked for opinions and now that some people give them they get blasted for it.

I, personally, have dated women with some smaller tatoos and though I am not a big fan it does not change how I feel about about them. I generally didn't know until we were into the relationship further when they were "revealed". If I see a large visible tatoo right from the start it is generally a distraction and turn-off to me. Just a preference. I think a women's skin is sensual and beautiful and a tatoo destroys that flow and beauty to me. I will stress...to me. Obviously others think they are great.

I have seen some women with tattoos that looked unattractive, and some who looks sexy big time. To each their own. I have nothing against tattoos at all.
I once met a woman who had music notes up her arm, it looked sexy on her. I also knew a woman who was sexy in my eyes until she got tattoos. Lots of times it depends on where they are as well.
I see this petite woman everyday at work, and she has tattoos up both arms, but she looks so sexy in my eyes. Where as some say the tattoos make her look awful.
Most times though women with tattoos like to date guys who have them as well.

"You are stuck with them" written in your above statement.
look you are GENERALLY stuck with them. what do you think the tattoo removal percentage is? i bet it's low.

the Nubians tattoo'd, the Pazyryk, the Egyptians most of Eastern Europe, Africa, Asia and the Mori
my ancestry is western european. show me your source that indicates great numbers of eastern europeans have historically received tattoos. this is a quote from wikipedia:
Tattooing was widespread among Polynesian peoples, and among certain tribal groups in the Philippines, Borneo, Africa, North America, South America, Mesoamerica, Europe, Japan, Cambodia and China.
i'm not a member of a tribal group.

now not everything on wikipedia is accurate, but i'm going to do quick research, i'll go to wikipedia. here's another wikipedia quote:
Lower back tattoos, or tramp stamps, are more common among young women.
here's another gem i learned from wikipedia:
Complete removal, however, is often not possible, and the expense and pain of removing them typically will be greater than the expense and pain of applying them...Tattoo removal is most commonly performed using lasers that react with the ink in the tattoo, and break it down. The broken-down ink is then absorbed by the body, mimicking the natural fading that time or sun exposure would create. This technique often requires many repeated visits to remove even a small tattoo, and may result in permanent scarring.

we could go on further with this...what do you all want to learn about tattoos and tattoo removal?

Not to beat a dead horse, it took me 43 years before my first tatoo and I love the two I now have. I think tatoo's can be beautiful, especially on the small of the back! If you want one - get one. It is even better if you get something that has some meaning in your life.

I'm with Bikeman on this one....
to each his own....but people should relize that after a few years.those wonderful colors and pictures eventually turn to a grey unrecognizable blatch of skin....
The way i see it....there will be a ton of old saggy ladies in the old folks homes..with a grey blatch of skin on their backs....arms....legs.
Humm.how attractive.
Let me kiss your back.....ewwww...what's this grey thing

I love my tattoo! It's small and it means something to me(it's my astro sign). I think that any girl that wants one should get one. Just becareful who is doing it and make sure it's something that will never change. I would do it over again in a flash.

I've got absolutely no problem with a tattoo or two. But you see lots of young people getting them all over--clearly a fad. Saying a tramp stamp has significant meaning seems completely unfathomable. YOU CAN'T EVER SEE THE DAMN THING, how is THAT significant??

I'm not a guy but figured I'd reply due to the fact that I do have a tattoo. Mine did hurt yes (of course it did) however I am quite feminine. I have mine located across my lower back and for those who see it I get nothing but compliments. We are not back in the days where only sailors and bikers have tats. If it is done tastefully like a piece of art I think its rather attractive and sexy.

i'm sure you get those comments from people who surely want to get physical with you. most other people either don't give two sh!ts, or keep their negative comment to themselves, they were raised proper by their mommas! (if you ain't got something nice to say, don't say anything at all) look lots of guys today like tattoos, they're the current fad, those with lots and lots of tats don't have anything to worry about TODAY.

To put it another way, you normally don't walk up to a person you don't know and criticize their hair, wardrobe, tatoos, whatever. So, people who are attracted to a certain thing are more apt to approach you and compliment. It doesn't necessarily mean the majority of the people or minority feel that way. It just means the individual feels that way.

Lower back tattoos, or tramp stamps, are more common among young women.

They did a thing on maxwell show that was a really big study on female tattoos. The most common was back shoulder tattoo. Tramp stamp was like 3rd (I have no idea why girls get those). The other ones were I believe around the belly button, all the way around the arm and on leg. I think tattoo on the butt was like 6th they were making fun of that one

With the girls outfits that get those tattoos they are highly visible quite often

For the record -

I hate the term "tramp stamp" - not every female who has a tattoo in the small of her back is a tramp. In fact - some of us got them there LONG before it was a "fashionable" place.

So umm yeah - if you haven't figured it - I have a tattoo in the small of my back. It is my own design and incredibly significant to me. I don't think placement takes away from significance. I chose to have mine in the small of my back because it was the least likely place for "others" to see it. I've had my tattoo for 18 years. It has been altered once and recolored twice.

Those who "know" me know I have it... those that don't know me ..have no clue and would never guess. I don't think there is any way to determine who has, or doesn't have, tattoos... and I don't think it is a fad.

My oldest son was sure he'd get his first tattoo as soon as he turned 18 - he spent 4 years in the Army with 2 combat tours and not a mark on him. My youngest never said a word about getting a tattoo until the day he came home with one on his arm (just days after his 18th birthday).

Just my 2 cents -

undercoverblonde...msg12...I'm with you...those who don't like tats or any other feature of a amn/woman that they meet....no need to be insulting....just keep swimming. I am for the most part pretty conservative....but found something that had a significant meaning to me....I had it tattooed on the back of my neck....1st tat after 40...then after much thought I got a tiny, tiny diamond nose stud. I am also an account exec for a Fortune 500 company and have been for years. The tat is not visible most of the time...my hair covers it....But I have not had any negative remarks about either....

I have always found it interesting how when a guy is checking out a woman's tattoo on her lower back, she thinks he is a pig looking at her butt. I recall quite a few times a woman gave me a dirty look when she "caught " me looking at it, and I said 'What? I am just trying to see what your tattoo is" and her reply "Ya I bet you are"
makes me laugh. Why get one, wear a short top, low rise jeans so it is visible or partially visible and not like it when a guy is looking at it? Never could get that.

Personally I think your comment about after twenty years....she looks pretty run-down is pretty ignorant. For your information I am well over 20 years, and have at present 10 tats and I love every one of them. If you don't like them, that is your opinion and you are entitled to it. But to generalize and say that after twenty you would not recommend it, I'm sure there are some 20 year olds that don't look so hot with tats too...

Just a brief lesson on Tattoos in Europe;

“The South Pacific forever changed the modern West when early explorers and sailors absorbed this part of the culture of Polynesia and bought tattooed natives and their own tattoos back with them. Of course Europe was not a stranger to the early use of tattoos, although they had faded from memory by the time of these sea adventurers. Constantine I, the first Roman emperor to profess Christianity, had banned tattooing of the face in the early 4th century because it could be interpreted as a defilement of God’s image. Banning in Northern Europe occurred at the Council of Calcuth (Northumberland) in C.E. 787, and undoubtedly tattoos were discouraged in many small ways throughtout the growing Christian world in an effort to discourage superstition and paganism.”

“The Roman historian Herodian described observations [in] the 1st century of the animal body markings… of the Celts…
…The people of northern Britain were called ‘Picts’ after the display of just such images. They were even described by Julius Caesar in 55 B.C.E. in his description of the Gallic Wars. The Danes, Norse, Saxons, Gauls, and Teutons all had traditions of tattooing that focused on family and tribal symbols. Nor was tattooing unknown in other ancient cultures on the European continent. In the Mediterranean region it was practiced in Greece (adopted from the Persians) and Rome (adopted from the Greeks).”

Excerpts from The Tattoo Encyclopedia (Terisa Green)

Of particular interest, in response to your query, Bikeman

my ancestry is western european. show me your source that indicates great numbers of eastern europeans have historically received tattoos.

Did you note:

The Danes, Norse, Saxons, Gauls, and Teutons all had traditions of tattooing that focused on family and tribal symbols.

By their very nature, most members of said family and/or tribe would logically bear such tattoos, no?

Numerous mummies found in Siberia suggest tattoos were worn by women also.

Certainly records prove Polynesian woman did historically.

So tattoos on women in this age is nothing new, and certainly nothing to be put off by, at least IMHO.
