| Class action against Yahoo Personals and Match.com for fraud Posted: 11/20/2005 6:15:32 PM | well one way people are getting away with not paying for the dating service , on american singles , they sneak there e-mail addresss in there description of theemselfs, so and so at the smiley face or running man, get the hint and as far as match .com , i get e-mail about them telling to check out who has viewed your profile all the time , not yahoo. it is fun really , people fall for those , like not telling you who sent you a e-mail ,unless your a paying member , that happens on american singles , but you know that happens all the time , always worry about it . thanks pof , your the greatest | |

| Class action against Yahoo Personals and Match.com for fraud Posted: 11/20/2005 6:40:21 PM | | You can get past the fee by simply choosing a name for your profile that is identical to the name for your instant messenger profile (not the case for me and this site). About a third of the women on those sites (that are legitimate) use the same name for their profile that they do for their aim or yahoo messenger service. | |

| Class action against Yahoo Personals and Match.com for fraud Posted: 11/20/2005 7:21:54 PM | I remember after signing up for a few of these sites (particularly Match .com, though I never paid), getting e-mails from "women" that "viewed" my profile. I immediately knew it was fake since the address was a almost always a hotmail account. They'd typically say "Hi, I saw your profile on such and such .com and thought you were interesting. I'd like to get to know you better. I don't check my e-mail on such and such .com too often, but you can get in touch with me by going to my personal website at xxxxxx .com/xxxxxx. My personal e-mail address, which I check everyday, is on the fourth page."
Curious, I actually checked one of those the first time and would get taken to this site that seemingly looked like a personal page with all these pictures of a "girl". At the end of the first page was a link to a second page which proceeded to a third page. At the end of that third page the "girl" would say something like "I have some more 'special' pictures that I'd like to show you, but current regulations prohibit me from showing those. On the next page you can get my personal e-mail and I'll send you my 'special' pictures." And there you'd get the link to the fourth page. And on that page, instead of an e-mail address, you'd get a page asking you to sign up for an adult verification service or some such.
I also remember the days when these "women" proliferated the IM services and would start out saying they lived in the area and did a search and your name came up or some such and they'd talk to you and you'd respond and then suddenly, out of nowhere, they want you to visit their "special" website.
Lol, the thing is, on the e-mail thing, I actually responded to the e-mail and blessed the people out and told them to never, EVER again send me an e-mail like the one they had just sent. Needless to say I get yet another e-mail the next day so I replied and literally cussed them out. Never again did these "women" bother me.

| Class action against Yahoo Personals and Match.com for fraud Posted: 11/20/2005 7:26:37 PM | I proved to Lavalaugh that they salted their lists - you can find dozens of identical profiles (pictures, descriptions, everything) under different names in different states. When I called them on it, they tried to say it was other people fraudulently joining the site with 'robots' and the like ... BS.
I had sent them over 23 profile names that were the same 4 posts. No doubt, Lava salts the lists.
I'm surprised to hear that about yahell tho, as frankly every time I've been on there I have great talks with gals and eventually meet up with a few. Unfortunately, their $$$ is way to high and I drop out prety quickly.
This site is an enigma - while I appreciate that there is no 'charge' foi joining, look at all the advertising dollars that are potential here, it's the same game. POF, please don't fall into that trap ...

| Class action against Yahoo Personals and Match.com for fraud Posted: 11/20/2005 7:59:52 PM | Hey Guys and Gals, sure sounds a little 'fishy' with yahoo and match personal sites, but I would like you all to know that not ALL pay sites are bad. I have had great experiences with Lavalife.com for many years too, way back when it was called web personals, I know this site is no scam because I still communicate with people I have contacted after sending smiles, or visa versa, through my MSN hotmail, and the past two relationships I have had, were 3 years and 2 years, both met from lavalife, and paid for credits to contact each other... POF is a great website, but I feel the big difference between a paysite like Lavalife and POF is that on these paysites when someone contacts you they are really interested, hence using their money, not just a quick 'hey whats up' emails from people you would never be interested in or make contact first, basically incompatible. There are always going to be instances when you 'smile' or 'wink' back and forth, and after sending an email or two, you (or the other) feels there just isnt that much in common or not interested anymore, that doesnt mean there is a scam going on. I honestly feel these lawsuits will go no where, I agree sucks to be 'playing' with people's feelings, but honestly ask your self this question, have you ever been contacted by someone you were really not interested in and send a courtesy email back saying hi, and than just left it alone....? Or on the other hand contacted someone you jsut thought 'wow this woman (guy) is amazing' and than the dissapointment when they dont reply....? Thats just the name of the game folks! Bottom line is I dont know if these people filing these calss action lawsuits, are just broken hearted, or if there really is some 'fishy' business going on with fake 'winks' ect, even if there was though, its the customers choice to buy the credits and respond back, own free will! Oh and finally, dont be hating ALL paysites! Lavalife kicks butt! Even with a great site like POF I still purchase credits on Lavalife and contact/ chat with people, call me stupid, but look for yourself, and see the difference! J | |

| Class action against Yahoo Personals and Match.com for fraud Posted: 11/20/2005 8:07:52 PM | This comes as no suprise to me. There are other sites who have been doing this for a long time just ask me if you would like to know the names. I have filled out some pretty "vauge" bios on them just to have a look around. No one in there right mind would reply to something like that, but the e-mails and winks just rolled in you cant help but laugh. Now if only that was the case on the legit sites Hmmmmmmmm Be wary my friends,if it seems to good to be true,,,,,,,,,THAN IT IS !!! | |

| Class action against Yahoo Personals and Match.com for fraud Posted: 11/20/2005 8:32:15 PM | I once was a paying member to both of the sites at issue, And as well I received winks, or members interested in you, notices. I quit both of those sites quite a while back, because the matches that they sent to me on a regular basis, were far from anything that I considered a match for me. the news of the lawsuit does not suprise me in the least. I have just recently found POF, and I would like to say that I think that POF is an above average site! Warren | |

| Class action against Yahoo Personals and Match.com for fraud Posted: 11/20/2005 8:32:18 PM | "Yahoo news...reporting a Yahoo lawsuit? Can you say biased reporting? They pin Match.com to the wall though."
That's a good example of why it's a bad idea to get all of your news from one source like Yahoo. And I have no doubt that there are many people who use it as their primary news source. I like news collector sites like Fark.com Slashdot.org and news.google.com when I don't open CBC. All of them have talked about this lawsuit though, and they're making almost as big a deal out of it as the Sony Rootkit Spyware scam that they aren't covering much because their reporters don't understand how big a betrayal it is.

| Class action against Yahoo Personals and Match.com for fraud Posted: 11/20/2005 8:51:35 PM | | I believe the statements by the admin. I had something similar happen to me on another dating site. I filled out a free profile and within hours was bombarded with winks from ladies. I joined and didn't get another over a two week period. I then contacted the dating site and asked them if they were doing that (sending out fake winks just to get people to sign up). The site didn't admit to doing this, but promptly returned my money and deleted my profile. SO BEWARE when joining because of alot of attention from a particular site. It might just be the dating site themselves. | |

| Class action against Yahoo Personals and Match.com for fraud Posted: 11/20/2005 9:13:08 PM | I have had ad 's On 20-25 sites for the last 6-7 months now and 9 out of 10 of them give you that fake, false hope stuff! It was match.com. they would keep sending me letters that I can't read unless I join ,but It shows me what they say and there fine pictures. It turns out, that the girls work for match.com. And they Live in texas, I'm In pa. And there in there early 20's and I'm In my 40's. you know that don't happen unless there looking for a sugar daddy, or a meal ticket! Most won't give us the time of day in there 20's. So anyway I hope they do have to pay up! Where do I sign my name for my Cut $$ ??? there soliciting me ,us and everyone for $$$$$. I am very happy to have this site also. The hell with the rest. I used a name beachlover69 on yahoo and they wouldn't post my ad. they Said the user name was profone or vulgar!! give me a break! | No wonder... Posted: 11/20/2005 10:05:55 PM | I've not had the experiance many of you had with Match or Yahoo, but I've been on both systems. I canceled my Match account today (deleted my photo first), and I'm currently not a paid sub to Yahoo.
But I was on Match a week, had a decent picture up, a very friendly profile, and not a single wink, email..nothing. I find this very very suspicious. I usually get inundated the first couple of weeks.
I've had luck with Yahoo in the past, but the system seems to have gone downhill in the last year or 2.
As for True, I've never been tempted to use them. I'm a member of Myspace, which, along with LJ, I use to keep in touch with friends. Myspace is a free system that is like a blog, a photo station and a personals site all rolled into one. I was using it just to store photos and email a couple of friends before I realized it had some personals functionality. Around this time, I also noticed the top banner ads for True. They were all highly sexual, very suggestive, and the pictures of the women were so damn fake it was scary. It will be interesting to see if MySpace keeps up their ads with True. MySpace started as a place for bands to advertise, and the admin is a down to earth guy with a heart. They also advertise a personal site geared towards teens...now THAT is really scary.

| Class action against Yahoo Personals and Match.com for fraud Posted: 11/20/2005 10:09:52 PM | That is completely horrifying..... considering the fact that it really makes you wonder about buisness' nowadays.... I'm just glad that I'm a member here where I know that the people sending me mail aren't perfect enough to make me think that the admin and hosts are sending me false mail (not that it would benefit them anyway, because I'm too broke to pay anything) but.... I do know this: I feel so bad about those people that are being conned out of their money thinking it is getting them some sort of future happiness in the mix... I feel plenty bad enough when someone mails me and then stops for no reason, but when you find out that the "hottie with a great personality" turns out to be the same guy you're paying to get you the one and only, that must just be a shocker. I hope those companies pay for their crimes against us humans. thank you and goodnight.

| Class action against Yahoo Personals and Match.com for fraud Posted: 11/20/2005 10:29:12 PM | I was reading this over on Slashdot http://yro.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/11/20/1820202 Along with the usual trash and idiotic comments you do find some gems. The big difference between PoF and the $$$ matchmaking sites is the forums. Here we can look at people who are participating and rate them on a large number of factors such as political stance, common interests, their ability to be erudite in a print format and not just on looks and an short blurb on their profile.
I've been lucky in that without even trying to contact members of the opposite sex on this site to have met several interesting people online who appear genuine and are interesting, fully rounded individuals. I've also met quite few people of both sexes who, if I were living in their locale would qualify as good 'drinking buddies'-the sort you would go out with so you could discuss "polytiks, bullshipping and oder topiks wif"
Bottom line from the article is that only matchmaking sites that are registered in the US are fairgame for this action. I predict that we'll see a rush by a large number of sites to change their business address to Greater Lower Slobinia or whatever the name of that country is that Dogbert made use of for fulfillment and websupport.

| Class action against Yahoo Personals and Match.com for fraud Posted: 11/20/2005 10:42:37 PM | | I have also suspected Yahoo personals of sending out fake winks. I think every so often they have a drive to increase membership and that is when you receive a few fake winks to get you to sign up for $$$. Then after you signup and try to respond to those winks, you receive no response. Just when your subscription is ready to expire, you receive more winks to get you to re-subscribe. Anyway that is my experience and although I couldn't prove it for sure that is what I suspected they were doing. In my experience the best dates I have had have been off of the free sites like POF. | |

| Class action against Yahoo Personals and Match.com for fraud Posted: 11/20/2005 10:44:24 PM | | Well I'm surprised more people havn't been sued - I'm a web developer myself, and I'd say 90% of the dating sites out there use some form of these tactics - Hey but I use these sites as well (ie POF), but have proven some of the noted ones fake as well.. so many actually STOCK their sites with profiles - new sites even COME with "free profiles" so they can have a good startup and look more full - Have to admit that is the biggest hurdle for any dating site is to get going..(I know this personally) Anyways other sites do more than have fake accounts, they have their employees (as mentioned) farm replies from users to get them to join... some even send messages after your Trial ends telling you you have mail - only to find out its from them if you actually pay to read it (some don't even tell you who the mail is from til you pay)... while some of the biggest sites out there go as far as fake accounts with very complex auto responders/bots - some even chat!... all fake... It's the old "Eliza" program all grown up (for those of you that don't remember the old computer science - this would reply to your questions with answers deemed correct to your question"... With typos, and delays, etc, just like a real person.. so don't get suckered in. Sure as you have read, sure some people have good luck on these sites because sure their are real people too, just as there are fake people here on POF as well - at least we dont have to pay for them and most of us can spot them with common sense. So just use which sites you like, and keep eyes open, and dont be afraid to write people and ask questions. | |

....90% of the dating sites out there use some form of these tactics If you check out Yahoo profiles for those fitting specific interests, especially relationship or sexual ones, you will turn up dozens that are bogus and only aimed to suck you into sites such as somespamsite etc.
Many of them are so poorly prepared that they're easy to spot. Female profiles in the Gay Male groups, males in the Lesbian groups, etc., and a huge amount have the ID's generated by computer, with things like a00000 as the first few characters, etc., so that they will appear in the top of the listing. Of course, Yahoo is not interested in removing them, even though they are often against Yahoo policy.
None of this is very surprising though. All these tactics are transparent as they can be, and are only trawling for the lonely, sex-starved etc. to take the bait and sign up.
Anyone who's genuinely looking for specific others simply needs to be careful. And the amount of care isn't particularly much. Once you think it seems you're about to be bitten, forever shy.

| Class action against Yahoo Personals and Match.com for fraud Posted: 11/20/2005 11:13:09 PM | | my message now says "somespamsite" etc. What I actually typed was something else, but it was changed from the unabbreviated version of "a.f.f.", which adults might use to find friends. Wonder if it will be changed in this message? | |

| Class action against Yahoo Personals and Match.com for fraud Posted: 11/21/2005 12:29:46 AM | By arlie1969 :
I was on match .com for six months and wrote over two hundred messages and not one date or an actual written response, ...
Same experience here (but only up to 170 messages written). I've also sent about 400 winks over 6 months to people that I had not followed up with messages. In all that time, I got back only 30 replies of any kind (including the simple "not interested" reply to a wink). Due to overlap, that's about 500 people contacted (an average of 3/day) and about 2,400 profiles read.
However, my experience in RECEIVING winks and messages seems quite different from everyone else on match. In six months, I have received only 5 winks (two were in reply to winks I initiated), and ZERO messages. So, if there are fake winks/flirts/icebreakers and fake messages going on, I haven't seen them. However, no actual dates. My profile there is quite different from the one here; different photos too. I wonder why I'm NOT seeing the problem of fake stuff that everyone else is seeing. However, still no actual dates.
Before signing up for match, I had asked a cousin who is about 20 for her opinion of online dating. She told me that two of her friends met their s.o.'s there (and one couple is now married). Therefore, I thought "what the heck; it worked for them."
I have seen them on another pay site (previously mentioned under the forum thread mentioned in message #1 of this thread) - and still continue to get an average of 4 messages and 2 winks per day there - on "realsexdates." That's the site where the owner, Mark Whrel, had been previously sued by AOL for being a spammer. Too bad those of us who are now here (I'm not the only person from there who is here) didn't know that before we got suckered over there.
As for the free sites, I'm glad that this one has very few problems. "Craigslist," also free, has a spammer problem (spammers posting ads to their websites). Having multiple dating sites also seems counterproductive. This is one area that should be monopolized.
No one has mentioned this, but remember the 6 episode TV show on ABC called "hooking up?" I now wonder if that was a ploy by the dating sites mentioned in the title credits....
