I've tried Brief Encounters, and while their meetings were real, their 6 minute speed dating was real, the three times I tried them, I was sure at least 10 of the women expressed interest for further contact. We were not supposed to give any contact info on our 6 minute interview, and were supposed to wait for them find us saying we were interested in the same people who said they were interested in me. Net result, sixty 6 minute dating events later (over the course of 3 speed dating nights), and 80% of whom I thought were interesting, and none of them selected me. I challenged them in an e-mail and all they said was they are sorry. Last time I'm hoodwinked by speed dating. While I don't have the legal backing to try it, and the desire to face anyone in small claims court, chalk this up as another questionable tactic. Whether their service really works, well I don't know. But when Pros in the City talks about a 4 minute speed dating, I wonder how they can think 4 minutes is enough if 6 doesn't work?

What really gets me is how many sites say free signup, only to later turn around and tell you that you have to pay to contact someone. Honestly, that is lower than low.

Thank you Plenty of Fish for remaining free. Even though I haven't found anyone yet, I'm not going to give up.

Yep there are a lot of websites that say they are free. Then when you sign up you will get a lot of "winks" from nonexisting girls. And then you pay, and try to make contact with them, they either never even heard of you let alone wink at you, or they are just nonexistent computer simulated girls. I have heard of this, and seen it personally as well. It's pretty sad to be hones. Among all the "free" dating sites it was pretty hard to find POF, but I'm glad I did.

Cartographer,

I went through the same thing with speed dating. I was hoodwinked, and had the same crazy thing. All that time spent, with not one match during the course of several attempts at speed dating. Never again. Those events are just not worth the time or the money wasted. It's another scam to take advantage of single people and their desire to find love.

Cheers,

Well I would tend to agree that there is a lot of fraud going on with the pay sites. Ive been hearing about it for the last couple of years and on one site I received an email from the same gorgeous looking woman ...twice.... from two different cities... lol Now my question is how does POF remain free? I am guessing that its from charging at the door for their singles events in the cities. I live in a small rural community and they havent done anything around here. If they did I would go.... If I actually get hooked up with someone that Ive met on this site.... I would gladly make a donation...

Oh, Michael, nice way to try to lower someone's self esteem today!! That was mean and uncalled for.

Speed dating is another scam targeted against single people who would like to meet someone special. These scammers tell everyone there's been no match, and just take people's money.

Buyer Beware!!

Thanks y'all! Despite the fact I'm really glad I read this forum, now I feel really stupid!

Anyway, I thought it was my imagination, but you're right, as soon as I quit match.com, all of a sudden I received LOTS, & LOTS, & LOTS of winks, and emails, etc., etc., etc.

So, now at least I don't have to take all of this so personally!

Yahoo was really good until they got greedy.

I met a number of nice men in my area, and was really happy with the service, until they started the paid service, and it went downhill quickly.

As long as it was free, the people using it were mostly quite sincere, as far as I could tell. Once they started selling subscriptions, the real people gave it up, and the scammers and spammers took over. It's too bad.

I hope pof manages to stay free, not just because it doesn't cost me, but because they will do a lot better at maintaining integrity by not selling accounts.

I also remember actually meeting people on Yahoo Personals back when it was free. I met some good folks on there.

Another set of services one should be wary of are the FriendFinder sites. There are some real folks there, but I suspect that many of the ads are dummies. Likewise, in their chat areas there appears to be a lot of traffic but almost no one responds to anything you write. They also have a thing of listing an ad placed on one site on one of the other sites. I placed an ad on FriendFinder and started getting cupid matches from 2 other sites in their group. Likewise a Mexican-American friend found her FriendFinder profile reposted on the Hispanic version of the site.

For what its worth, theres nothing wrong with charging what the market will bear, we as consumers have to refuse to pay it... sadly the desire to find someone far out - wieghs the desire to pay 10.00 instead of 30.00..... though I agree that kind of cut throat lassiez - faire capitalism was largely broken in the early mid 20th century, there are still good examples around (read: Halliburton et. al.) .................................................................................................................

None the less, I think its less likely to get ripped off by an established outfit with an established reputation to protect than many of the fly by night date outfits. I too have been scammed.

Incident
I paid for a subscription but after a couple of weeks was unable to access my account. Company was TOTALLY unhelpful and sent me boilerplate when they replied at all. This company practices negative billing, they did not accede to my request to cancel my subscription, they would not remove my profile causing me to wonder how many other people are remain on the site because they were unable to remove their profile. I am instituting proceedings against them in Vancouver BC for fraud, identity theft, misrepresentation, unlawful billing etc. Anyone interested in doing this as a class action suit is invited to join me. I had similar experiences with yahoo

Damage Resulting
I have had to cancel my credit card. Had serious anxiety issues about what they would do with my credit card details and still do. Since they continue to use my profile for promotional purposes I feel I should be indemnified. I also feel that I was misled into believing that other profiles they show on their site are actually real since I found old profiles of myself on both sites although I had asked both companies to remove them.

Yahoo and match are full of false emails and profiles. Any other company would be shut down or brought up on charges. I'm wondering who they must know to stay in business. Lavalife seems to have been the only pay site I've dealt with that seems to be somewhat honest (although not always).

I caught those snakes at Match.com poppin me for fake winks before I even paid them. they were easy to spot. they received nothing from me but a nasty virus. I caught them, I called them on it, and they denied it. this was prolly 3-4 years ago. I wish I had kept the correspondance, I bet it woulda helped. I was mysteriously getting winks from people that hadn't been online during the period that the wink came in, thats what got them busted. I'm not a stupid person, and don't like being treated like one. they got from me what they deserved, and then some.

This is something i always though happened.
Just for the heck of it i posted on another website.
No picture, not much info but i received over 20 emails a day.
Sometimes from the same women who seem to keep forgetting they already emailed me before.

Later i meet a guy who worked at this site and he said there are fakes ads on the site in order to grab more people to come on the site.
He said he worked as one and pretended to be a certain sex and talked with many customers but never meet any.

This is happening to me right now with True.com. I get the stupid winks all the time since I closed my account. These folks are obnoxious. I'm not even remotely tempted to ever reactivate my account, especially since the selection was marginal at best.

Personally, I think the whole wink idea is dumb. If you don't have the intelligence to spark my interest with something witty or catchy an impersonal and wimpy wink is not going to work.

Many Personal sites do just that. I have even read that there are users in my own town looking to chat with me only if I pay. I live in a unincorp. small town and know just about everyone there. Its just a gimmick for you to spend money.

Another issue that should come out is that many of these sites do not even let non-members read emails ..even if sent by a paid member! they do not tell the member who paid this. That to me is false advertising! Have done a survey and found that guilty include Yahoo, Match, Jdate and all it's affililiates.. and I'm sure others. Not-guilty besides plentyoffish are cupid.com and singlesnet.com. Wrote to match.com about this and they don't even respond!!!

it was such old thread and picked up from the bottom of sea of messages, should we sue pof for fraud ?

online "dating" is like playing powerball, when number gets big, then you buy $1 and give it try. otherwise you are wasting money and energy.

I could not read all the posting to this subject. So will just say what I have to say and be done with it. I have been looking at online dating for almost 5 months and only met people from pof, but sad to say no click so no chick. Ya that was bad but I can be bad.
Of other sites paid and free and have had winks, flirts, and emails sent to me. But when I respond It's like they never heard of me or just don't reply. The ones that contacted me and did respond back to me were cons looking to milk some money out of me. I found this amusing at 1st then got annoying because that is all I seamed to attract. I started reporting them as each one started asking for help {money} one way or another. Some were almost believable but I am 50 years old and not living in a dream world think someone in their 20 would have much to do with me. Most said they lived in the USA but ended up stuck in Africa. To think that people fell for the story's is a little hard to believe.
But then some people are that lonely they reach for something that is not there to be had. Preyed on by others looking to make a buck. I even put in my profile if you are in Africa do not contact me. They don't read profiles they just click on mail and paste a message that they send to as many accounts as they can with a yahoo email contact to add to messenger. And then the fun starts with getting to know you and then they say they love you. All with in one or two chats. You would think middle age men would catch on to the fact they are chatting with a 20 something female. And they more then likely are not female, just some dude scamming for money.
There are many types of cons going on with online dating. One is the remailer. It starts out like any other contact but instead of money you become a middle man to remail goods bought online with stolen credit info and delivered to you. You think maybe this person is real because they do not ask for money. After a short while they say they are taking a trip to say England from where they live in the USA and would like to come visit you on the return trip. So when they are in England they tell you they need to order something and could you take delivery of it and they will take care of it when they come for their visit. Now I already know they are a con because 1st the flight from NY to London only took 4 hours and they texted you when the got there. I have flown there twice it takes 6 hours plus check in time and time to clear customs and immigration. Now since 911 I think it would take at least 8 hours not 4. Not saying anything I just let it ride and replied to the text message. The number that displayed did not have the UK country code for phone number. I checked where it came from and it was Ghana. A well known online dating con area. From there I went back and did searches on her name and phone number she had given me, but told me was shut down while she traveled. Found her address but phone number was from another city about an hour away.
At this point most people would walk away. But not me, I wanted to see where this led to. So I agreed to having something shipped to me and send yes that I would remail the package. Never guess what country it was going too. Yes Ghana it is. A printer worth about $100.00 Canadian was coating $187.32 to mail to Ghana paid online with a credit card. So I contacted where printer was bought and told them what was going on. They were no help except to say if I reported to police then police could contact them and get any info they had but they would not tell me anything. So I called police and went down next day to file the report hoping that they could catch the con artist. Filled out report and showed it to desk. I even trace another guy down that was being coned and had already sent 1 package to Ghana. I had all the info shipping documents and contact info for the con and all the search info I had found out so far. Now Ottawa police being so helpful and at there best said I could not prove there was a crime. Well that did not set to well with me and things got a little heated. I left leaving every thing at the desk. Sat down at my computer and researched every thing I could about this con. Something like $240,000,000.00 was defrauded from credit card company's in 2006 with this type of scam. Some people caught in this remail scam were charged with some charge or other and all they did was get coned by a pretty face. Found out there are a few ways of reporting this. Phonebuster and recol are 2 Canadian site that take your info and pass it on to R.C.M.P. and the opp. In the states it's ic3.gov who report to if not a part of the FBI.
Once that is done it's a hurry up and wait thing. Still waiting and have 2 printers 2 ink packages and 1 cell phone that I was to mail to Ghana. So how do you catch a con if police either don't see the crime or don't respond in a timely manner. Called mounties and was told had to wait until someone got to my report. Contact Ottawa police and tried to find out what was happening to report I made. There was nothing on file, but I did have the name of the guy who took my paper work and was put into contact with his sgt. He seamed to think it funny no report had been file either and it had been 10 days sense I tried to report it. Said he would talk to the officer and see why not. He did make a call to the fraud guy but they too said needed more info, and the sgt thought there was no crime either. So I am upset yes. But bite my lip and ask him nicely to please to 5 minutes of his time and google remailer
But he was sure there was no crime. So I'm fit to be tied but don't let lose on him but inform him that I was going to talk to the papers and see if they think there is a crime here. He said something like what ever. So yes contacted the Ottawa sun who I had to call before about a crack dealer dealing drugs out his window 30 feet away from my daughters window and police did nothing. They did a story then and they are doing another one now about this crime that Ottawa police don't think is a crime. I was emailed from report with a phone number to another sgt that would take my report this time. Funny how when a paper ask them something they can reply and do something. He even told reporter about phonebusters, but I already know about them. I just wanted to be sure something was being done now. This con artist has had a profile on site for 2 years and if it has been used for that 2 years how many people did they hurt with remailing and ident theft. How much money was lost. I know of one person who got stung badly at that too. 3 credit cards were issued to his name he did not apply for and an online account set up at a internet store. He had same problem with Toronto police but was able to file a report with the OPP. If I had not found him and told him what was going on he would surely be hurt by what had happened. He was lucky and was able to put a stop to the card and the account before it was up into the thousands of dollars.
Moral of the story if it's online don't trust and protect your heart and your wallet.
And don't take no from the police. Push them to do something and maybe educate them as to what their job is. I did not make any friends there this week.

Daaa you think
sorry for the long post I just hope it helps at least one person. And they get to help someone else. And online merchants should be held acountable in this because they do not take safe guards when taking orders. If the IP address is coming from another country {Ghana} then where credit card are from it should be flag for human response. There are programs that will do that for them too.
