Finally a website gets caught. I have seen several websites in the past that do the same thing, where you sign up for a free trial and never use it. I had received emails in the past that said such and such user was sending me a message. Half the time the person wasn't even from the same country or sounded like the had a female porn star name. I hope this is a wake up call for everyone on these sites. I'm going to think twice now before I try match.com or yahoo or several other ones. I hope the websites lose the cases against them.

I've been suspicious of this since I joined lavalife a year and half ago. In fact, I contacted Lavalife management and told them about the fake profiles and chastised them for allowing them - never accusing them directly of producing them. I did however suggest that they allowed them as collusion with the third parties as the benefit to them was obvious. They had opportunity and motivation. And even if they did not produce these fake ads, it looked bad nonetheless. They continued to say that they remove fake profiles but could not act solely on "suspicion" even though it says they can do exactly that in their own Terms of Use contract. They had no answer to that. So they had no answer as to why they left them alone.

Eventually the emails back and forth came down to me warning them that sooner or later, an expose would break in the news about this so it was not in their interests to conduct the operation like that.

Interesting discussion,

I think someone is quite opportunistic with this suit... and the ones who will get rich are the leaches.... oh... ummm lawyers.

I certainly agree that Yahoo was much better when it was FREE.

But, Yahoo is also far from being the worst. It's biggest problem is that it doesn't allow a person to know whether the person getting the e-mail can read or reply to the message... and, of course, adding an e-mail address to a mail message opens a person wide to SPAM :P. Changing e-mail messages without letting a person know is equally bad. (of course, POF blocks some of the oddest things).

I detest sites that entice a person to spend a half an hour or so to create a FREE profile on their site... then once the profile is up, one quickly discoveres that it is not FREE at all.

I would certainly agree with a site that would charge a nominal membership fee for initiating contact (provided that was stated on the opening page), but they should ALWAYS allow a person to read and reply to all e-mail messages received. Let's also be reasonable with the fees... maybe $10 / year...

What about some of the sites that individuals have hundreds of different profiles, each in different locations, sometimes with the same photos and descriptions?

What about logging in from an African IP address, but posting a US ad?

Let's see...
thinking about the last time I logged into Yahoo.
There was a group of women with very enticing photos.
Listed as being "local"
But, the text was very short
And, there was almost nothing in the personal attributes section.
These were very predictable, and all were certainly bogus.

There was also a group with NUMBERED accounts... some funky name followed by a number.... most likely they reused the name many times, incrementing the number.

Anyway, I think the suits are somewhat bogus.. but perhaps it is time to reign in the personal sites that use questionable practices.

You can never be to careful on the internet or the use of your Mobile Phone .There are millions of scams and faulse advertising.Heres one for you Guys to be aware of. Its a classic this dating game, only free sites are the true sites.Television Adds on at night advertising SMS and get Hooked up tonight (YEAH RIGHT)
After $40.00 checking this out i soon relised this was a scam.. They Hook you up to an automated system they ask for your age and location and every time you tell them it just so happens they are in the same area as you are.. (Coinsidence) when you ask where would they like to meet you the subject is quickly changed and another topic comes up and they come back and say come over and meet me but never give you the address or place to meet. Being inquisitive i kept SMS . I tried another client and it was a simillar conversation.I only did this to see how true this so called Television advertisement was.I have Reported this to our local Broardcasting TV station and this will be dealt with. Its so wrong that this can be aired on Television and be faulse advertising, but yet people get away with it.I have only ever paid for one dating site, never again

I refuse to pay to chat or meet anyone on a web site. My motto goes like this "If it isn't free, it ain't for me". I get real annoyed when I take the time to fill out a profile and hit send and there is this long price list. I usually go back and delete the profile. I also hate when I get e mails and winks through the mail from both these web sites and when I try to respond they are asking for money. I am glad that I found Plenty of Fish and I recommend them to all my friends and even my buddies on Yahoo. I hope they continue to offer their services for free.

I KNEW IT!!!
Several sites do that!!!
And a few{like Hny/M}have such Lazy employees, they can't even Bother reviewing a persons Profile Update...They just deny it, and say 'You have Too Many Profiles, already'{I have 1 !!!}
Or..'Contact Info is not allowed in your Profile'....{But they let it get into the 'Fantasies' section...It's Still There!!!}
Damn Profiteering B******s!!!
And Am/Match is full of people trying to get you to Buy into their Personal sites for more info...
Glad I don't subscribe to them..in fact..I'm Deleting Most of them..Right NOW!!!

11dave11,

Man I feel your pain on this issue with true and to the others who got ripped off as well with Yahoo. I entered True.Com on a three day trial thing to see how I liked it,well in a short while I could see that I wasn't gonna find who I'm looking for there. Most of the people sending messages to you are 22 or 23 year old,Barbie dolls who just want to meet someone older, they all live in California, usually in the same city, and the most important thing, they work for True.Com as lures. I saw this early and canceled within 24 hours on the site, where I was asked to give an explaination why I was leaving them. I jumped through all the hoops they threw at me and low and behold,I checked my credit card statement, wouldn't you know it! I got charged for a whole month! I called them only to be told I had to call some other company and verbally cancel! I asked why is there a place on your site to cancel ,if indeed it does not cancel your membership, and yes, you guessed it,the guy said "I don't know"

I protested all the way up with them,to the top of thier company, and finally resorted to calling my credit card company, who also said,we can't do anything either, the funds were held and until they were released by True.com,they couldn't do anything either. Eventually I was able to recover half of my money back, only half, but you know, its not the money so much,as it is the violation you feel when you get taken for a ride,so be careful with these places,POF provides us with so much, and with none of this stuff going on. Laws are being broken out there everyday, and I hope eventually we will get our day in court to settle these pratices and shut down all this kind of practices. Thanks for your time all,God Bless all of you and to the makers of this wonderful site......

It makes me sad and disaapinted, that society would take advantage of people who are simply just trying to find their one and only. It also disappointments me that while some of the people in the world are starving others are getting wealthy by playing off peoples emotions. Futhermore I bleieve that we all need to look at this problem fron all perspectives there are some people who go on dating sites like this one who don't have good intentions. There are people in the world who enjoy harming people, but there are other people in the world who just want to find a person who makes there soul complete. There the ones I feel sympathy for their innocent and untainted by societys harsh reality. I wish them the best because their the ones who get hurt in the end. Ad for big buisnesses who are only interested in money and don't care about the little people you hurt. I have a questiom for you how do u sleep at night? As for evryone who these dating websites effected my heart is with u. Good luck and god bless

I found this site to and signed up as well, only to find out there were hardly anybody on the site,so after a few days,I had enough and canceled. I had a few days to go,and all of a sudden I had five emails all in one day. I will never waste my money on another paysite,I have only two subscriptions now here and one other, both are free and both you can talk to the person for as long as you wish without a dime.....

I get sent yahoo personal matches all the time...I don't think those people mentioned are "waiting" to talk to me...and It seemed a "little" preposterous to believe that they were and I could talk back if "only" I would subscribe...bla, bla,bla.....whatever.

A few weeks ago I received a wink or smile [I forget which] from True. I contacted the lady that apparently sent me the message and she said that she hadnt used True in about 6 months so I guess it isnt only Match.com and Yahoo that are playing around. Keep up the good work POF.

I recently got out of a three yr relationship and my sister told me about this .com site called true three day free to contact people and after that is 50 a month they say they do a back ground on felons and married women and men. When doing the three days free you cant give women/men your email you have to secretly do the two@hotmail. thing.. On top of it over 250 people wanted to meet i responded to every one and only got four responses and 10 where local within 100 miles and a few scams. I called them up they where not interested really in the welfare of the cutomer. I will never pay for a site. Its nice with the ones that are free out there where you can do your what kind of dog or iq you have which rock star you are ect.. But some are just too damb young and like me just doing it for fun.. And if you ever put in free personal sites in goog there are millions lol.. I dont know how many times i joined and tried to unjoin a site usually too hard to unjoin. I think men should sue sites that are only free to women i know that is what makes there money but isnt that discrimintation?

You just dont know do you ???...I find some sites are common BS and i put my trust in Free websites now. I tried Network Marketing Myself for 12 months or more with a Few different websites,No Experience needed as they said.Just 30 mins a day to become a successful internet Marketer.I thought why not as i was intruiged with the power of the internet!!!Only took me 3 months to work out that they were only interested in lining their own pockets with your hard earnt $$$.The more sites and programs you visited, the more products and software you had to purchase to build your website.Everytime i queried this i would get told, my websites are looking great and that i will be in earning $$$ very soon,so just be paitent and keep up with what your doing and things will soon be happening for you ,i was told these Products you need to help get your website out there and on the best search engines.(I was still Waiting)I didnt know what i was doing right but yet i had that feeling i wasnt productive and getting nowhere. Some of the people i was associated with were close mates i built up over quiet a period of time as my friends and nothing was mentioned when to me exchanging emails until they started inviting me to come into the sites they were associated with. That was my Biggest Mistake,Putting trust in people i thought were my friends. I do beleive anyone can make Honest $$$ on the internet and my theroy is if you have invented a product that is going to be a Big Seller to promote as an individual. What i did learn through this is Most Websites are Automated setup emails on search engines, Therefore as a Marketer you only had to confirm the email and fill out another webpage to add to your Webite And Yes pull another $$$ out of your Pocket. Theres alot of Bad Eggs out there.
Anyone else had a simillar experience.

Aye.. I had heaps of emails sending to me to offer free deals if i come back.. I emailed them back saying: If i removed myself from your database, why have you still got my email address?

never heard from them since... pmsl

Some sites offered free for ladies to click and message (which most never do) and men have to pay something rediculoursly $50 a month to send a message to anyone.. of which we are not sure if they actually made it to the intended target :/

Anyways.. I been there done that.. I stick wif free ones.. They know what they are doing :)

I found many fake profiles at match.com and sent warning e-mails to them and the profiles in question were deleted immediately, also when I first checked it out, got many winks only to join and find that user deleted account as soon as I winked back. Some profiles were exactly the same only different pictures and cities ( including a four paragraph self description) other pictures had different names and cities for the same photo. But I've mostly given up on trying for dates on ANY site because of fraud and misrepresentation. Even on free sites there are paid people to help create traffic to generate revenue (advertisers pay by traffic volume). To create traffic regionally some sites try to start local interest by having shills try to make it seem as if a certain area is really a hot bed of activity hoping to attract and manufacture real members to take over and expand the site's user base.
