| Class action against Yahoo Personals and Match.com for fraud Posted: 11/20/2005 6:08:01 AM | Might want to add another site to that list... or it should be added. www.seaoflove.com See below:
Here's the message I received on my Yahoo! Personals account:
"I'm writing this one time to tell you I don't use this account anymore. But I always check my messages over at www.seaoflove.com. They just started and they're offering free memberships. I'd love to chat with you there. It's a really nice and unique place. Lots of cool art and animation and REALLY good features. Message me there.
Kat at Sea Of Love"
Then, I discovered SeaofLove.com has a "Webmaster Affiliate" program which probably explains why people are receiving these "friendly" emails...
http://www.seaoflove.com/affiliates/index.html
"The earning potential is endless. We have webmasters earning several thousand dollars each month just from promoting SeaOfLove.com. Webmasters continue to send us their traffic because it works! The amount you earn is up to you. The more traffic you send, the more money you will make. We supply you the tools you need to succeed. You can choose from banner ads, text ads, or email campaigns when you sign up."
add to this :
From their current terms of service (emphasis added):
"It should be understood that from time to time Sea Of Love, may monitor your profile. This may be done many ways but not limited to a representative of Sea Of Love, using a fictional character, whom may send you one or more correspondence. If you have any questions about this practice, though very rarely used, feel free to ask for details. These measures are used to investigate reports of abuse and harassment among other situations and you should also understand that these fictional correspondence are indistinguishable from real correspondences."
While the fictional correspondence referred to in the terms of service is for a good cause, it does show that they are willing to fake messages. I wonder whether the emails we received are real or shill messages?
Clearly, both Yahoo and Seaoflove are to be avoided. Thank you POF.

| Class action against Yahoo Personals and Match.com for fraud Posted: 11/20/2005 6:16:49 AM | I have tried the 'paid' sites a couple of times. I figured out a while back that at least a couple of the sites where I signed up for 'free' (but could not contact anyone unless I paid) were probably sending fake responses. The profiles behind the fake responses were lacking in realistic detail and just did not feel right.
If it is proved that Yahoo and Match.com have been sending 'fake' winks or messages, or setting up fake profiles to boost the number of singles supposedly on the site, they should be sued for fraud, and customers who paid should receive full refunds. The companies will probably settle for millions, not admit wrongdoing, and come up with new 'ethical' guidelines about how they run their sites.
They are no better than con artists if they are using such trickery to get money out of lonely people. Individual states also should start taking action. In Missouri, contact Jay Nixon, Attorney General, if you have been a 'paid' member of either of these sites, and lodge a complaint. He has been pretty active in consumer protection. If states also seek action, it will increase pressure for settlement, and to expose these sites for what they are, scams.

| Class action against Yahoo Personals and Match.com for fraud Posted: 11/20/2005 6:29:17 AM | | That explains alot. But it still doesn't explain why I am still getting e-mails from a hottie from russia through match.com. But I know my e-mails as a paying member of match.com were being edited when sent to non paying members. | |

| Class action against Yahoo Personals and Match.com for fraud Posted: 11/20/2005 7:02:08 AM | I have knowledge that match edited my emails from allowing personal email addresses to be sent...which I find to be total bullshit since I was paying 30 something a month. Someone should be able to write me what ever they want... but what they did to me last week I found to be even worse. I decided to get rid of my match account completely...the changed the format of their site so when I went to resign I hit reregister instead...okay I take fault to hitting the wrong button, however they charged me for 6 months of membership fees, I HAVE NEVER paid for 6 months at a time ever in the 5 years I have been on and off this site. I have always paid for only one month at a time. I called my bank to have it stopped they told me they couldnt I would have to call match. I cancelled my subscription within a matter of minutes when I realized what I had done. When I called customer service and explained to them that since it was my error in hitting the wrong button I understand getting charged for one month is sufficient, but 6 months was not fair...The informed me a manager would call me back within 24-48 hours...I never heard from anyone, infact I got an email pretty much stating "too bad, so sad"...I had been a customer on and off for 5 yrs, sorry to say...and this is the great customer service I get...I told them I never ordered 6 months at a time, and they said this is preset for all customers.... so I wil never use them again and warn anyone on there to make sure you change all the presents on memberships!!!

| Class action against Yahoo Personals and Match.com for fraud Posted: 11/20/2005 7:02:17 AM | | I called to Yahoo.com attention on numerous occasions the FRAUD in not keeping its data base clean. The site is riddled with RUSSIAN SCAMMERS, NIGERIAN SCAMMERS and WEBMASTER SCAMMERS including SEAOFLOVE.COM. It is fraud to take my money and knowingly supply me with a list of bogus members. I named the profiles and at first they removed them, but the profiles reappear and they do nothing about it. You can easily see the fake profiles for they use a pattern in their screen names or a pattern in their preference, as they will date men 18-70. You can easily see, if you do a cronological search, you can see many profiles from the same town, same age and same wordage, which spells F A K E. In real life a woman usually will date a man a few years older than she is, will date a man about her age or wants an older gentleman, in actuality very evyer few, if any, women will have a dating preference of 18-70. So these paid matchmaking sites non-dilligence in cleaning their files amounts to FRAUD. I have sent numerous letters to Yahoo.com, certified return reciept addressing these errors and they made no attempt of reinbursing me. Match.com also has RUSSIAN, NIGERIAN AND WEBMASTER SCAMS posted, but is better at cleaning their data base. When both parties must pay to communicate with each other, a gentleman might provide an alternate email address so the other party would not have to pay, but in doing so you oly set your self up for scammers to spam your email account with junk and sell your address to other spammers. I GAVE UP, she will find me. | |

| Class action against Yahoo Personals and Match.com for fraud Posted: 11/20/2005 7:28:11 AM | | Yes! I have had the exact same experience with True.com .. they are a terrible site. In the time i had my profile on there, i'd gotten a totaly of at least 150+ winks... yet when you look at the number who had viewed the profile it said a MUCH lower number, like 75. Then i would get an e-mail saying that i winked at so and so and they have not responded... yet i had never winked at that person. One of there ways of trying to get me to subscribe i am sure. | |

| Class action against Yahoo Personals and Match.com for fraud Posted: 11/20/2005 7:30:42 AM | | Yes I was on Match.com for awhile. I did not receive any winks or letters from anyone, let alone local. As soon as my subscription was up all of a sudden they found these "women in my area". Not very impressive. I do not "pay" anymore here. I still have not met "her" but there is always Russia. | |

| Class action against Yahoo Personals and Match.com for fraud Posted: 11/20/2005 7:38:43 AM | | I also have had that thought that this was happening after I responded to winks or emails and recieved no responce from that person. There is a site I used that is neither match or yahoo that I feel did this also. Sad thing isn't it to scam money this way when you are trying to find someone in life. Rob | |

| Class action against Yahoo Personals and Match.com for fraud Posted: 11/20/2005 7:40:03 AM | I have found with dating sites they tell you it is free to use and then when you sign up and fill your profile out and log in to use it you find you get taken to a payment page for subscription!!! Why are they allowed to do this??? I can understand that sites like faceparty have certain things that you can pay for if you wanted them but you can still message people for free but you have a limit on the messages you can get in one day. I find that ok and people accept it and alot of fun is had, but you do get scammers on sites and when you report them nothing seems to get done about it. The worst thing about it is that they log in with a new profile and do the same stuff over and over again and never get caught as you do not have to fill out personal information or have an address checked to see if it is a true address. I have been targetted by too many people and it would be nice to get some HONESTY on these sites for once. If you ask for idea's no doubt people will help out and give you their views on how they would like to see things better protected on internet sites!!!!
Well Done Plenty Of Fish..... I love your service!!!!
GOOD LUCK TO YOU ALL WHO ARE TAKING INTERNET SITES TO COURT......

| Class action against Yahoo Personals and Match.com for fraud Posted: 11/20/2005 8:00:38 AM | | I didn't actually subscribe or respond to anything sent to me, but I did get a lot of winks initially, then a lot after I took my profile off. They still contact me, maybe a year after I notified them twice to take my profile off. I'm sure it was a scam. | |

| Class action against Yahoo Personals and Match.com for fraud Posted: 11/20/2005 8:24:43 AM | OK, folks, it's like this:
Whenever there's MONEY involved, you can count on a scam. This holds true for politics, too, correct? (as if we don't already know) Unfortunately, many of us hope that there are honest businesses out there, the fact is that fewer and fewer are.
