Posted: 11/23/2005 10:54:15 PM | As someone mentioned earlier, it wasn't unusual for ppl to get married at 12, 13 years old... what they didn't mention is that these were oft times arranged marriages and they lived with one of the families. Now, with that said, the boy was with the men, learning whatever trade or skills that he needed and the same was true for the girl...
It was a very big, extended family that nurtured and cared and guided the young couple...
The problem is that the age of consent laws that are in place today in some states are from the turn of the 1800's and times have changed. There is no more need for the extended family that was present in our earlier agrarian society, so marriage at 12 is no longer necessary to build a stronger workforce.
Our morals have changed too, human life is not as valuable to some people as it used to be... this gives way to predation... and teens, boy and girl alike are preyed upon because they are vulnerable to suggestion at that age. Age of consent should be the same as it is to drink, smoke cigarettes (legally) and vote... 18.... (I included drinking because I am former military and couldn't see the logic in sending an 18 year old to die w/o allowing him to blow off steam with a beer.)

An adult man can not have sex with a 14 year old....that is still considered statutory rape.
For those under the age of 18, there is a three year rule, meaning that a 17 year old can sleep with a 14 year old girl and get away with it, a 20 year old can't.
As for the orginal post...these are two completely seperate issues and I do think there should be different penalties for both.
It is NEVER acceptable for a teacher, coach or anyone else in a position of authority to have sex with a minor child. NEVER...male or female. If they are not at least 18 years old....stay the hell away from them.
This guy's career is ruined? Tough shit ! So is the 15 year old girls life.
I am disgusted that you would dare suggest that she was a slut and deserved it somehow....she was 15 years old !! Yes, I've seen some sleezy looking 15 year olds...but they are children...children. We all go through phases, think it's cool to look and act grown up....that doesnt' mean we are grown ups at 15.
What this guy did was wrong...period and he should pay for it. He took advantage of a minor.
As for the guy in the bar...completely different...she lied about her age, he had every right to assume that because she was in a bar, she was of legal age. He did not knowingly seduce and have sex with a minor. | |

I already answered that question,or at least thought I did.I've been trained over the years in my profession to be objective regardless of the the situation.It's my nature and objectivity is almost a religion with me.I would first want to know ALL of the FACTS.
While I believe there is no excuse for someone dinking with a minor,I would want to know if it was truly consentual and what the circumsatnces were.Did he seduce her?Did she come on to him?Was it mutual?Was drugs or alcohol involved?I would want my daughter in counseling or some type of mental health program to evaluate what was behind this behavior and I would definitley want to see this guy out of teaching.Yet I still would see no reason (if the sex was indeed consentual)to want to see this guy do hard prison time.
Just a side note here,may be nothing to this case,may be something,I've learned that the girl in this case was white.The teacher is black.Now while that shouldn't matter in the great scheme of things as far as justice is concerned,this is still the deep south.One of my collegues from another station and I were talking about this case who happens to be African American.I told him about the girl being white,he shook his head and said,"Well he's gone for the duration". | |

Posted: 11/24/2005 12:18:47 PM | i think there is good and bad as far as the age of consent goes. it protects the older partner in a teenage relationship from prosecution and it also protects them from being exploited (that includes any relationship with someone over 18 that develops quickly, internet "luring" for example). in theory we could raise the age of consent to 16, but then we'd be criminalizing a 16yo having sex with a 15yo....
until 1890 the age of consent in canada was 12 for the reason that people were married younger. it was in that year the age of consent was raised to 14 in canada. | |
