This means that he should be capable of keeping his first wife and managing his children well,. the word "mia" can be translated as "one" and "first", This flows well with the teaching of Christ about divorce and also with the verses in Malachi 3:15,16 that say God is against one who deals treacherously with the wife of his youth (forsaking first wife) and that he hates divorce.

I don't read the original languages, do you?
I notice you post in the English translations to make your points and I did go to the effort of finding a site with the Greek and English. I also posted the word translations.
I did agree that the word, which on the site I went to was Kia...not Mia could be used as First, yet it had to have supporting text to change the original meaning of *one* to First. | |

heis hice
one -- a(-n, -ny, certain), + abundantly, man, one (another), only, other, some.
Further more, the over use of Capital letters is annoying and against Forum rules as is the amount of preaching you are doing.
And please don't repeat the above post, you already have it in here 3 times, I do believe that is enough. Your condensending attitude certainly will not win you any followers of your belief system. | |

This revision does not claim to be a literal translation of the passage in question but highlights the original concept of the author, which was marital felicity.

As I have been saying, heis/mia/hen mean exactly the same thing. Other than spelling and pronunciation, the only difference is grammatical gender. When this numeral is used with nouns, to denote '1' thing or 'a' thing, the gender of the numeral must agree with the gender of the noun with which it used. We can see an excellent example of this, which also demonstrates well that heis/mia/hen all mean exactly the same thing, in Ephesians 4:4-6:
»There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all« (Ephesians 4:4-6, KJV)
»one body« = hen sôma, neuter gender.

Second, what you don't seem to understand is, even centuries after the bible was written, experts can't agree on the translations.
Since I don't read the original language all I can do is rely on others that can.
I am sure you also can't read it or you wouldn't continually copy and paste from sites you won't even list.
Most languages have gender associated with a lot of their words, and as with most things what you add to the sentence can change the meaning of words
Just as from what I gathered there is no greek word for Day...yet I notice in most of the translations it is inserted.
I see no reason for your nastiness in your replys as no one has attacked you, only debated your posts. And I refuse to get involved in a flame war.

We chose to be silent for a time to let feelings have a time to settle and hopefully come back to the Shalom (peace) that passes all understanding.
There is much to be learned from Yahweh's Scriptures and peoples thoughts and also much to be lost by getting inflamed and angry over different peoples views on a subject. This we believe we have seen here in this particular discussion.
We truly hope that everyone has grown from what they have learned here and pray that we can again discuss this in a peaceful and calm manner.

Posted: 5/23/2007 9:50:34 AM | I don't know how you can advocate polygyny in New Testament times in light of Paul's writings in 1 Corinthinians 7:2, "But since there is so much immorality, each man should have his own wife, and each woman her own husband" (NIV).
I don't know how you can interpret that verse to mean anything other than one woman/one man per marriage. If each woman has HER OWN HUSBAND, obviously she is not sharing her husband with any sister/wives.
Also if you take into account the words of Jesus in Matthew 19 when he teaches about divorce and God's intention for marriage from the very beginning, it is obvious that it was never God's intention that marriage be anything but a union between one man and one woman at a time.
"Haven't you read,' he replied, 'that at the beginning the Creator made them male and female,' and said 'For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the TWO will become one flesh.'? So they are no longer two but one. Therefore what God has joined together let man not separate.' 'Why then,' they asked, 'did Moses command that a man give his wife a certificate of divorce and send her away?' Jesus replied, 'Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning. I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, and marries another woman commits adultery" (Matthew 19:4-9 NIV).
I believe that if you honestly look at polyamgy in the Old Testament, you will see that it produced nothing but heartache in the lives of the people involved in it. I believe that we can see from Genesis two that it is God's will that marriage be between one man and one woman.
Look at Abraham. God promised him an heir, but instead of trusting God he took his wife's handmaid and had a son by her. He ended up sending her and her son away when the Son of Promise--Isaac--was finally born.
Jacob had four wives because his father-in-law, Laban, kept tricking him into working longer to win Rachel. The sons of the four wives were not close. Jacob obviously favored Joseph because he was the son of the wife he loved--Rachel. The brothers sold Joseph into slavery to Egyptian merchants because of their jealous over their father's favoritism.
I haven't even touched on the trouble David had because of his multiple wives. Solomon disobeyed God by taking women of the nation's around Israel who turned his heart to the idols. This was a great sin for Solomon.
As has been pointed out already, one of the qualification for an elder or deacon in the New Testament Church is that he must be the husband of ONE wife. Polygamy is not allowed. | |

We have done much study on the subject that you mention last about the elder and the deacon and feel that Yahweh and Ruach ha Chodesh have reavealed that this means that a deacon or an elder should be a husband at the very least and even better that he be a father, not that he should have only one wife, theier are many scholars who agree that even Yeshua's desciples had more than one wife and they were the founders of the Christian church, in esscence deacons and elders it has been revealed to us that a single man cannot hold this office. | |

Interesting theory. Any REAL corroboration? By the way, by the description of Zeus' sexual peccadiloes as described below....seems that Zeus might more likely be 'your' 'god', given his penchant for 'dipping his wick', so to speak, in many different 'pots', not to mention his amorous relationship with his 'sister'....as in 'sister-wife'? Sound familiar?

Posted: 5/24/2007 11:00:35 AM | There are a number of interesting points you bring up, first of all, Zeus is not a god, he is a myth, as are his sisters, father, mother and all other greek gods. Satan in his finite wisdom would like to have Yahshua's name be changed to deceive the very elect.
The other point you bring up is very interesting in that you claim that perhaps Zeus is our god, as we like to have sex with our sisters just like he did. The difficulty with that is that Steve even if his sisters of which he has 2 were the most beautiful women on the earth, he would NEVER have sex with them. Steve will not think of his wife as his sister, she will be his wife, Kara will be her sister and Kara and her sister will never have sex, it is scripturally condemned as a lesbian relationship, and would never be condoned in this house.

We should NEVER disobey mans law UNLESS mans law instructs us to disobey Gods law. *Im pretty sure that it is against mans law in your state to marry more than one person. | |
