Well, I will never knock anyone who wants to learn more.

the stuff I play requires no soloing, in fact, It requires very little talent And the market here..well, lets just say bassists are in demand.

but I can dig the theory thing. I focussed my learning on studying (listening to) a lot of the early innovators. While I will never be a James Jamerson, I can immitate him allright, and for this area, no one will know any better

now, If I was playing in a rock band that had bar gigs and did covers of modern stuff, i would probably consider it. But my playing is really more a hobby and for some monthly play money.

The main thing is to make sure you have the groove for whatever style playing! A solid bassist makes a great band- we are the GROOVEMASTERS!!

I play fretless, it's a custom bass. The body is a J bass, configured P/J, solid Zebrawood/Brazilian Rosewood. It was made back in the late '70s by Bob Summers (Shark Guitars). The orginal Brazilian Rosewood/Ebony neck twisted so I replaced it with a Rosewood/Ebony Warmoth. The pickups are a stock Fender early '70s P and a Duncan stacked J. This bass weighs a ton, it's made from some of the densest woods on the planet, and to top it off, the bridge has a half-inch machined brass block under it. Needless to say, the sustain is other-worldly, with bandwidth to spare, and a dynamic range that scares people.

I often tune it a whole step down.

You can see it here -

http://homepage.mac.com/ewald/.Pictures/woodshed.jpg

In the studio I run it into a Radial JDI d.i. and split it to a pre, compressor, eq all Neve, from there direct to media, ...no eq. the other line goes to a '71 Ampeg V4/2 x 12" Altec 417H (alnico) cab in front of a hand built Neuman U47 clone large diaphram mic, ....for "air". .....Engineers love this bass to death.

Live, if there's crew? 3 x '70s ampeg V4's and 3 cabs one for lows (chopped V4B "reflex" with 1 x 15" EVM SRO), one for mids (chopped 4 x 10" SVT cab, ...'70s) and one with the Altec 417's for "balance". If there's no crew, I use the studio amp set-up and lean on the FOH guy for help.

..... kills bugs dead.

Fretless rules!
My main axe isa `74 ( I think ) P-bass with a maple fretless neck. It has the jbass p/u with the split p-bass p/u. This one weighs a ton also! But you can`t beat the huge fat sound of this bass. My two j-basses sound good too, but the bottom isn`t the same.
Lately for gear I`ve been using two cabs-4x10 and single 15". I am currently using a Peavey T-max head, but will moving to either Ampeg or SWR. Fortunately I work in a music store that deals in this stuff, so I can take it out and try it at no cost!

Hey Late- nice to see you here! Who`s your main man on fretless? I love Pino Palladino and Tony Franklin. When I got my first fretless in `85 ( been playing fretless steadily since! ) I bought Paul Young`s Secret of Association and a Boss OC-2 pedal!

Who`s your main man on fretless?

Oh jeeezz .... Ray Brown? ....Red Callender? ..... Hmmmmm... Jaco. The last few years most of my influences on bass come from the "world music" genre, ....hmmmmm, and Thelonious Monk's left hand. As far as contemporary guys, I love Roscoe Beck's work and Charlie Hunter's too.

I play a lot of other stringed instruments too, primarily a guitar player since '67.

Avoid the "store-bought" ampegs, they're bogus. SLM bought the ampeg name in the '80s, ....might as well buy a Crate.

If you get a chance, try an early '70s V4, or V4B 'peg, drop in some 6550A or KT88 tubes and prepare to pee your pants.

Thanks for the Ampeg tips, bro!
I`ve always dug Jaco- I`ve always tried not to emulate him to closely as so many others do. The Weather Report album Heavy Weather has been a long time favorite of mine. I used to have other albums- they have gone missing over the years!
With fretless, I have worked at the ability to make it not sound fretless so when you do the little things only a fretless can do, it really catches people of guard! The beauty of fretless is the emotional range- pretty sounds right on through to ferocious!

Ampeg tips

The fact is, you can't buy anything off the shelf that is as "overbuilt" as the old 'pegs were, not for bass anyway.

If you ever decide to go the vintage ampeg "way", let me know, .... I have access to parts, actually I have a stash of parts for these to last a few lifetimes. I've also helped design some interesting circuit mods to make a V4 more "SVT-like", ....mostly in the power supply and bias circuit.

Just a caveat, .... all tube amps have the potential to kill if you go poking around in them, '70s ampegs even more so as they have higher than usual high voltage on the plates. 'Course, this is one of the main reasons solid-state will never come close, as they operate at exponentially lower current values. If you're lucky, you will find some grumpy old solder jockey that knows his way around a tube amp, ...if so, I have all the referrence material he would need, and parts.

make it not sound fretless so when you do the little things only a fretless can do, it really catches people of guard!

Heh heh, ....that's called "good intonation", yeah, ....I can't even play fretted bass, it's just too limiting.

Try playing an altered chord tone on a fretted bass, it just sounds like you're in the wrong key, ....on a fretless, a flat 5 sits nice in the pocket creating tension, on a fretted bass it just causes a train-wreck.

I do a lot of playing with an acoustic guitarist who hogs the low bandwidth, he also plays a lot of baglama saz, a middle eastern stringed instrument with a lot of bottom, so I get to play a lot of altered tone stuff higher up.

A lot of the stuff we do is really unconventional, a lot of non-western instruments, I do a lot of slide work and lap steel, so .... the fretless really suits.

I would to hear some of the stuff you play, Late. You sound like someone I would enjoy working with and most definately learn a few things from!
Yeah, good intonation- very valuable indeed. I do lots of studio work on fretless, so I get a chance to really keep up on it there. I have actually played a few gigs with one band leader before he even realized I was on fretless!!! I`m not one of those guys who has to do every fretless trick in book in every song`s verse, chorus, bridge... you know what I mean!
So it isn`t always immediately evident I`m on it. I always love the stunned look on peoples` faces when they realize it. Makes my night.
Do you sing while playing fretless? I do alot of harmony vox and sing a few leads.

Do you sing while playing fretless?
Sometimes. The gig I have now is pretty much "sit down". If it's a full three sets, I have to play 9 different instruments so I'm stuck next to a rack of various stringed instruments. I only get to play bass about 1/5 of the time. I wish I had extra hands.

Jimbo Wallace, (from the Reverend Horton Heat), and Patricia, (the hot babe from the Horrorpops), play some wicked stand up bass. I think Jimbo's much better than Patricia! I just mentioned her cuz shes hot!!!!!!!!! Jet Black Hair + Ruby Red Lips + a stand up bass = the hottest woman from Europe

just like a twelve string guitar the string are in groups

but since a standard bass is 4 strings a 12 string has 4 groups of three

not very easy to play

One of the best places I`ve heard 12-string is on Cheap Trick`s Live at Budokan. Apparently Doug Pinnick from King`s X uses one aswell- I`ve never listened, maybe I`ll have to pick up an album!
I believe the 12 has a regular bass string with two unison tuned an octave higher-I think. I would love to try one myself.

By Rickenbacker 4001 has never disappointed me, I have played it for thirty years. I still love it. I am not a professional player, but play in a band.

I play in a band called Rudy Quazar.....I play mainly 5 or 6 string....I used to play guitar and my friend asked to play bass in his band a few years ago, so now bass is my main thing.

My favourite bassists are versatile and/or weird players.....eg. Les Claypool, Jean Beaudin (of Nuclear Rabbit - check him out), Flea.....I know there's excellent players besides those found in rock music (eg. Jaco, whom I love) but I really enjoy players that approach the instrument differently than others before them.

Jean Beaudin, for eg., plays a 9-string bass, made by Conklin.....but that's 9 differently tuned strings, no octave doubles like on a 12 string....he also just received a custom made 11 string bass (made by Conklin as well).....to see pics go to Jean's website (google it cuz I don't know it off-hand). He's a kick-ass player.

Also I love Wooten's slap technique, he's also a very accomplished fingerstyle player as well...anyway.....Yay for the Low End!!!

Now check out Jack Bruce in Cream reunion tour on PBS public television last night. Jack is still as tight as he was in 1968. The band is in fine form. Great concert. I think one bass he played was a fretless if I'm not mistaken.

jesus..

u guys are a really talented and knowledgeable bunch. I have only been playing for a year and a bit but i dearly love my choice of instrument. In metal which i lean towards the rhythm section is very key. Especially with some of the new drumming techniques like double kick. We are the one. i would post my gear but i am on a budget and u guys would laugh your balls off. Influences...Burton, Claypool, Sting, Lee, Newstead, Woblers, Stroud. One question for you guys i am looking to upgrade to a medium bass i was looking at 2. BC Rich Mockingbird and a Fender P deluxe. Opinions ?

Not braggin or anythin--I play the same bass model that Paul McCartney played after he left the Beatles--the Rickenbacker. I love it, the intonation is great, just a joy to play.

I'd go with the Precision, .....that's gotta' be the "desert-island-if-you-could-only-pick-one" choice for anybody whose been in the biz long enough to know why. Probably the most recorded electric bass in history.

No brainer, IMO, ....unless you have a thing for "put-yer-eye-out-pointy" axes.

Well yes i like the look of the bass and have yet to play it to get a feel for it's tone and what not. They are both in the same price range i just want to know how the mockingbird sounds.
