| Bass players thread.... Posted: 12/12/2005 1:10:22 AM | I did a bit o' research for you.
The big drawback to the Rich, is the wood used in the body: Agathis.
.... As far as tone-woods are concerned, Agathis is known in the trade as a "trash" wood.
This is because it really doesn't lend itself well to either sustain or resonance. "Tinny" sounding with a lot of potential for "dead-spots".
Unless you're talking about the "NJ" series that uses "Nato" another wood I'm not a big fan of but similar to Mahogany in weight and grain, but not as much "bloom" in the low-end.
Electronically, it has a P style pickup, copy of the Fender, so probably similar sounding.
Fender Deluxe Precisions have Alder or Ash bodies, .....same as it ever was.
If "looks" is more important though, yeah, .....same basic design since the '50s, .....nothing to write home about there.
|
| Bass players thread.... Posted: 12/12/2005 1:33:08 AM | | actually it was the NJ series..with the double p pick ups. I will have to do a little checking on Nato wood though. I really want to play one to get a feel for how fast the neck is and just see how comfortable it feels. The Fender i have played and really liked but sometimes i feel like i am being a bit of a snob and not checking other basses out so that's why i wanna look at the MB. A EB Stingray would be awesome. Just to pricey for me at this time. | |

| Bass players thread.... Posted: 12/12/2005 2:26:50 AM | Don't necessarily go by the neck "feel", "off-the-rack" if it's crap, ......few vendors do a decent set-up when they ship stuff anymore.
If you really want to avoid being a snob, check out some of the Peavey basses, especially the 5 string. Nothing beats them for feel and tone at that price point. I recently checked out a few, ...steller. If I ever wanted to stray from "fretless-world", ...I'd go straight to a Peavey 5 string.
|
| Bass players thread.... Posted: 12/12/2005 4:59:27 AM | | i just might have to consider a 5 string... I think i will end up with the Fender though. Good basses and guitars for a long time. Any thoughts on the geddy lee sig series? | |

| Bass players thread.... Posted: 12/17/2005 5:54:13 PM | If you don't mind me just interjecting in this disscussion for a sec, I play in 2 Rush tribute acts and have had some experience with the Geddy Lee Jazz model, its a decent bass, however if your playing really heavy music you'll probably find that unless your driving the sound with some sort of pre-amp or drive unit the sound of that bass is actually quite bright and clean due to the custom winding specs in the J-pickups on that bass, it plays well and feels good but i didn't really care for the sound, you had to add the right effects to it to get it to sound like Geddy sounds when he use's it, if you'd like to get something Fender I'd suggest you try something like a Marcus Miller model or another J-bass that has very even tone across the frequencies. | |

| Bass players thread.... Posted: 12/30/2005 10:40:41 AM | Although I am a drummer, guitarist, singer and percussionist first, I have been known to dabble in some bass. When talking with non musicians, I do agree that the bassist is a bit less commended for their efforts than singers and guitarist. And I am finding that more and more non musicians are starting to come around to drummers as well. Bassists will have their day.
Actually the 70's was a great time to be a bassist since a lot of funk, R&B, and even Disco revolved around the deep tones, and synthesized beats weren't really practical yet. Even rock has had it's share of great and unforgettable bassists like Lemmy Kilmister of Motorhead, Megadeath's Dave Mustaine, Sting, and Les Claypool of Primus.
My favorite bassist of all would have to be Bootsy Collins from Parliament.
P.S.: I think that even less recognized musicians than bassists are keyboardists. Probably for good reason...just kidding.

| Bass players thread.... Posted: 12/31/2005 4:01:28 AM | ^^^^ The funny thing is, when a bass player drops out all of a sudden, you feel and hear it in the groove. If a guitar player or keyboardist isn`t sure of a song, they can "hide" until they pick it up. A bassist? He`s gotta be there- right now! We bassists are the groovemasters- and never let anyone tell you differently. Without us, who is going to support the melody and the guitarist masturbating with every extended solo? The drummer? Nope- he is only the beat. Bassists handle the gap between the beat and melody. We hold down the groove melodically and rhythmically. Two scenarios: 1. Good singer, Mr. Amazo guitarist, reasonable drummer, below average bassist 2. OK singer, reasonable guitarist, solid drummer, groovemaster on bass. #2 is going to move more people. A bass player who knows his shit ( and can sing! ) will definately improve any band. "Bassists will have their day"... have for years! Most people dancing will tell you they dance to the bass! The bottom end ( drums included, of course ). Try dancing to a melody without the bottom end driving it along. I got lucky early in my career and realized what a force bass really is. In the late 70`s, I wanted to be Eddie Van Halen. At that time no one I jammed with wanted to play bass, so I took it up. It didn`t take me long to realize all the tricks on guitar are just as easily applied to bass. My job is to groove ( a job I don`t take lightly! ), but, I also love to pull out a trick here and there and stun people- including the guitarist on the gig! You can do it all on the bass too.
BASS RULES!!!!!!!
Peace out my groove brothers!

| Bass players thread.... Posted: 1/3/2006 5:00:50 AM | Creative, that's a very good point. Bassists are well noticed if they drop out of a song. I was watching a Dave Navaro concert and his bassist, Miko kept turning off her volume in the middle of the songs and tried to retune. She needed to be shot.
But I think drummers are even more noticed for baking out. Yes the bass is a very important part of a band. and yes it links the beat to the rhythem, but what happens when the beat is gone and all you have is ryhthem and bass? I think the drums are probably the worst instrument to drop out of the song abruptly.
I have played a lot of small gigs around Boston that the stage (or corner if their was no stage) was only big enough for 2 or 3 people. When this happened, we didn't use a bassist at all. We would use only Guitar, percussion, and if their was room we would put a keyboardist in so that we would have both the high and low end taken care of. A good keyboardist can throw down a decent base line with his left hand while his right does the talking. I realize that this isn't as good as having a true basist, but when your cramped for space, and one person can do the job of 2, you have to go with it.

| Bass players thread.... Posted: 1/8/2006 4:28:54 PM | | I recently bought a Ibanez 4 string bass and the neck pickup keeps on going out. It usually comes back on when I stop playing for a while. Now, nothing. Already tried new battery and another amp. Will take it back tommorow to get fixed. Anybody hear of that happening? Its a SR500 model by the way. Oh, on lates post of Agathis as a bodywood. I replaced with EMG pickups on a agathis body and sounds wonderful. But I agree with him mostly. It was the exception and not the rule. | |

| Scored a new Bassman 250 amp today! Posted: 1/14/2006 12:30:06 PM | Hey guys, Yeah, my bass does have a loose wire. Took the cover off and pickup comes back on. When I went to a new music store to find a new larger amp. Was thinking on checking out a bassman which I like. I used the older bassmans before and they were good. The newer ones are even better! They had both new and old versions of them that I compared. Tried the other brands too. Had some Edens, but it did'nt do it for me. But they were just 2X10's. Price was good. Most of the bassman's on the internet were around $625.00. I paid $550 for mine. So I rolled me new amp home. | |

| Bass players thread.... Posted: 1/16/2006 2:56:47 PM | | I agree with that sentiment, I play a Godin 5 String with a 2x10 Eden TimeTraveler combo cab and along with the drummer of my band, Crave, deliver the attitude for our band. I always loved drums when I was a kid but my folks never caved into my requests for a kit. I used to sing bass in a barbershop quartet group my dad and I belonged to when I was a teenager and I bass-ically transferred all that experience into instrument form a couple of years ago. I don't have the dexterity to play 6 string so I figured the low end was the perfect fit for me. After watching Rick Savage of Def Leppard play a 5 string for years, I obsessed about getting one. I have a lot to learn about the instrument and am teaching myself over time. On stage, I kind of meld my performance after Gene Simmons, Rick Savage, Jason Newsted and Steve Clark. I connect on a real emotional level with the instrument and it helps me to work out the aggression inside, even though most of the songs our band plays don't have a massively frenetic aggressive tone to them. As much as we get knocked around by the other dudes in the band, they know they go nowwhere without us. | |

This IS the "desert island" bass rig of all time.
There is a great "tweak" for this amp, swap the 7027A's for good quality 6550A or KT88's, the OT and the PT are well within spec for this tube. You will squeeze another 25 to 50 watts out of it, and have greatly increased headroom in the bargain.
(disclaimer - get a qualified tech to do this for you, it requires removing the "bear-claw" clamps{the tube base is "live"}, and some grid bias mods, the high voltages inside tube amps can kill if you short out a filter cap, in these ampegs, the voltages are even higher than normal)
As far as the 7027A is concerned in regards to ALL ampegs, the circuit see's this tube as a 6L6-GC, which is a "drop-in" replacement for 7027A in ANY ampeg. Don't let anybody tell you different, the 7027A is internally identical to a "good" 6L6-GC, the only difference is that some of the internal elements are "brought out" to extra pins - These pins ARE not used in ANY ampeg, so save your money, don't bother with the 7027A, ....it's more expensive and not required.
If you want to keep the rich mids associated with this circuit, DON'T believe the BS about rewiring the 12DW7 socket to sub in a 12AX7, as is often reccomended. The 12DW7 is still currently manufactured so the excuse of "not available" is spurious., and swapping in a 12AX7 will noticeably suck the life out of the mids.

What would you guys recommend for a starter guitar/amp? This will be more for practicing at home and stuff until I can find some people to start a trip-hop/psychedelic group....

| Bass players thread.... Posted: 1/22/2006 2:26:37 PM | Luv the low end. I luv this job of groovin with the drummer.
Can't live without my low B string. I like the sleaziness below the usual E string. Been a singer most of my life and a bass player.
My Bass related equipment at the moment:
1) Fender Jazz american deluxe 5 string. Just got it, absolutely love it! 2) Heartfield DR6 six string bass. 3) SWR Bass Studio 220 4) Digitech BNX3 Bass workstation 5) Ampeg SVT-410 HE cabinet
I am at the point where should I get a new cabinet to match my present head? or a new cabinet for the SWR head, like a smaller cabinet? I use the present combo and it is okay for small rooms. However, this combo I have is an odd couple and the other option is to get a mono block amp or power amp to have the swr drive the ampeg thru it.
So, anybody here have an suggestions or ideas based on their experiences?
I am presently playing in a 5 piece basement band with a female singer. We are doing a mixed bag of songs we play anything in pop and rock from Cheryl Crow, Deep Purple, to Maria Muldaer.
I like prog rock, and funk, personally. Just hard to find someone who wants to jam and play the harder stuff or who has the time. I do this as hobby not as a profession. It's too bad my job gets in the way of music. Maybe, I should change jobs?
Cheers, keep playing..... Humming a tune....

Both Ampeg and SWR drivers are made OEM by the same vendor. 100 watts is kinda light for a SS amp, I would forget about the mono block and just pick up a tube head of at least 100 watts (a vintage Ampeg V4b'd be nice), or a 300w SS head.
