If it is for recording ............
get a good DI(radial).......do it direct/flat..........then tweak the eq on the recorded version

-demeter also makes a nice pre amp---ebay

live
-get a nice pre-amp then save for a good power amp......crown k2 used......mackie power amps are pretty nice too

some of this stuff is over my head...
Read up on the Radial JDI...if I'm understanding it right...it can't eliminate the AC noise
coming from the speaker...but it eliminates the need to mic the amp by plugging the XLR
cable straight into the box?

And I still don't see how that can fix eq problems with the amp? I don't have a mixing
board...just plug straight into the recorder....

...anyways...half the problem with the eq is ME...LOL...I'm just used to the
standard "low" "mid" "high" eq sections...nevermind six freakin' knobs...I could sit there
forever tweaking and never get the balance that I'm looking for.....

BTW, this Kustom...it's not just your standard AC noise...there's something seriously wrong
with this amp...turn it on and it sounds like a gail force wind coming out of that
f*ckin' thing

A JDI is a good start, ...if the studio you're recording at has pro gear?

They'll probably have a JDI, so all you need is a good cable.

I wouldn't recomend a graphic EQ, this is a multiple bandpass filter, all it can do is remove signal, ...not the best thing for tracking.

John Diamond is the only other guy that plays bass on sessions at the studio I work for. His rig is the type that is as good as it gets, Demeter bass pre-amp (parametric)/ Teletronix LA2A compressor.

- Not cheap, a rig like this is going to set you back a minimum of $6K, ....but as John says, "That rig gets me a lot of work, all I do is pass a quarter inch cable to the engineer and tell him -3db, ....they don't have to do a thing to the signal.

- At a quarter the price, I would try the UA LA-610

http://www.uaudio.com/products/analog/LA-610/index.html

I can't afford this one either, nor do I have a JDI of my own, but, ...the studio does, and also has killer front end, so all I need is an awesome sounding bass and a cable.

The best thing you can do on the cheap is get a JDI, a simple but quality line preamp designed for bass (this one may help):
http://www.aguilaramp.com/products_preamps_db924.htm
...and avoid using sub par recording equipment, if the front end of the signal path at he "studio" is crap, ...it's going to sound like crap at the end of the process. There is NO such thing as "fix it in the mix".

If it's just a "live" situation, a decent Yorkville combo will do the trick on the cheap, but I wouldn't use its DI.

Kustom? .....ew.

Late

you have some excellent points

(correct me if I am wrong paulchino)
I think paulchino II budget is much more like $200-$400(late's suggestions are right on the money but .......$200-$400 will only buy the glossy 2pg product litrature on the universal 610
..........and his recording system has little post eq(di is excellent if you can tweak on playback)

I have had some excellent results on a tight budget with a($300or less)
dod 830 15 band graph and behringer compressor.........ebay,your best friend

Yup...I don't really need any fancy shmancy shit...I'm recording in my house with a Tascam 8 track digital box (can kinda see it in my pic)

...I was originally thinking just get rid of that amp and get a decent combo anyways...while the DI sounds interesting...it sounds like I don't really need one with my setup...I just need a good amp that doesn't give off excessive NOISE...(I've never heard anything quite like this piece of shit and I'm convinced there's something wrong with it)

If it's just a "live" situation, a decent Yorkville combo will do the trick on the cheap

Yorkville eh? I was just looking into these today...most of the recordings are just "live" jams with one mic set up in the middle of the room anyways....(can't convince my bro to get a couple mics so we can at least separate the drums from the guits)

...but I like to sit down and come up with a tune on my own once and a while...it's these situations (when you're micing one instrument at a time) that really brings that Kustom to it's knees...

Thanks guys...I'll probably end up getting one of them JDI's eventually...just out of curiosity

That's okay too, but just remember, ...lower your expectations re: end result.

Take a look inside an LA2A sometime, ...not very fancy, simple in fact.

...lower your expectations re: end result.

I was talking about what I need in relation to the quality of the rest of my recording
gear....no sense dropping shit loads of money if I'm plugging into a Tascam digital recorder I
got for 300 bucks....right?

...if the time ever comes to make some cash from my music...you know I'm gonna do it
right...right now...let's just call it a very passionate "hobby" of mine...

...I love the idea of "simple" too Late...but right now I'm in a position where I don't even
wanna put bass down on my tunes...I'm looking for a "quick" but good swap...

...the bass is fun...but I picked up the six string first...and I'd rather focus on setting up a
killer guitar rig first....

as far as "bang for buck" any other suggestions besides the Yorkville? $400-$500

some used stuff^^^^^^^^^^maybe just at home sure a little combo will do
that is not a lot of money, if you are looking to amplify your bass in a band situation

but if you are playing with a band.........
even old used p.a. gear will do
at that cheap you are looking at whatever is loud and clean

dude at that budget
the used market,is the way to go,look at the local 'buy and sell'paper
for some old peavey bass head and a 15' speaker cabinet

p.s.
you spent too much on the mexi strat
it has lots of bling on it
BUT a mexi strat should never be $1100 ever

I've got my eye on a head on ebay:

Looks like an OLD Hughes & Kettner Basskick 707...I've searched but can't find any info as to what a good max bid might be....but it's sitting at about $1.00 right now....

All I know is H & K is a quality name so I'm intrigued....

any ideas?

well...I got rid of that shit Kustom...and I'm lookin' to pick up a cab next week...
I had my eye on an Avatar 212...

...but my cousin says that a 410 cab is the way to go for bass...and on top of that...we check out the music store tonight...and tried out an Ashdown MAG 410...sounded pretty good...and much cheaper than the Avatar....

...don't wanna jump into anything....any opinions?
...both cabs have good reviews on the sites that I've checked out...

Any guitarist that is any good knows, lets everyone else know, that to have a six string guitar sound good live you better have a bad ass bass player in the pocket with the drummer. I get more inspiration for riffs jamming with bass players than jamming with other guitarists by far. Just look at John Paul Jones, I love Jimmy Page, but he would never have accomplished all that he did without JPJ!! I think true musicians know that we all play together when we walk on the stage, groupies can pick a fav instrument, but we know that in a great band everyone depends on each other - and especially upon the bass players when playing live. I make sure to stay in good with bass player when I am in a band!! lol

I'm all about the low end of things! I have been a bassist for nearly 20 years now and I still love it. I have pretty well moved on to a new instrument though (Chapman stick) and I still fill the role of the bass player in my band (www.kindnessofstrangers.com).

Peace,
Dan

Jimbo Wallace from the Reverend Horton Heat is a master of the stand-up bass
and Matt Freeman from Rancid is just insane at bass solo's, (check out the intro's to Blacklisted or White Knuckle Ride)

I have been playing bass for over 30 years. even though i sometimes work as a lead guitarist bass is still my first love. to you new guys the best thing i ever did for my Teq. is take classical guitar that made my slap style and finger styles just plain rock. right now the warwick thumb is the only bass I sound good on ( i am a extremely aggressive bass player and the pickups on other basses just get in my way when I am doing 2 and three finger pops) O and read, read, read.

I want no hum and versatility...ddhm suggested bartolini & seymour duncan to me...
I've googled a few reviews, but there doesn't seem to be any overwhelming concensus...

any more ideas?

What about tuners? I wanna turn my Squire into a badass bass....

Depends on the bass - stock Fender P pups ('71), and Duncan "stacked" J bridge pup ('90s).

I mostly use the P

Passive all the way, do the preamp outboard - the best rig is Demeter/LA2A

Tuners? ....I actually have gold '60s Fender "reverse" gears, ...I don't really care, if it works, we're okay.

With a bass, most of the tweaking is done with the materials used in the construction of the neck/body.

Eliminating "dead-spots" is key, pick-ups are a non-issue as long as they're decent, and your rig is good - butta'

Go with the Duncan vintage style pups..... or old Fenders if you can find them, nothing later that '75.

The Squier will always be a Squier, if they used good trees, upgrade, if not ....don't waste your time.

here is some advice :

Go on ebay and buy a Warmoth bass that some one put together
for about $400us
you could get an awesome warmoth j bass with emgs etc
OR
$200 for pickups for you squier..........does not make good math

you could sell the squier to go toward the warmoth
SO........

for about the same $$$$ you could have a smoking bass

ah there lies the interesting part....the Squire website says "solid alder" body....but the damn thing feels lighter than my strat...makes ya wonder....

...I always thought the biggest factors in tone would be the amp and pickups...and if I could upgrade the Squire at a total cost of $400-500...as opposed to swapping it for a $1,000 Fender...I'd be laughing...

"Light" alder is awesome, ...it's resonant....the lighter it is - the more resonant.

Sounds like you have "good tree" as far as the body is concerned, ...find an MIJ Jazz neck, and you're on the money.

If you can find an older '90's MIJ neck, ...way better than the Warmoth.

Go for some old '70's Fender pups, idiots get rid of them all the time, ...Duncan makes good stuff if you want to get reps.

Don't mess with the active EMG crap, it's crap.

Your rig will handle the passive vintage style pups just perfectly.

Alder's killer - listen to Jaco -

paulchino it is bad math
at the end of the day it is still a squier, in most buyers eyes

I was under the impression he was interested in playing it, not selling it.

If you have a light alder body, - definately go for the vintage style passive pups - if you don't like the neck, check ebay for '90s MIJ

If your neck is good, just get it dressed by a pro, get a set of decent AlNiCo pups....

Other than that, you can go for warmoth, ...but do realize that they aren't necessarilly "quality", ...they screwed me on a neck I payed $600 in '99, for a custom neck, they burned me, ...charged me a $300 premium for Brazilian rosewood, and sent me crap from elsewhere. - "That's all we had" .........well, ...no extra charge on the site for "run o' the mill.

Th neck is fine, but they charged me for wood I didn't get, I got the same thing that would have cost $250, by the time it arrived, I didn't want to wait another year.

Assholes, ...I had dealt with them before they were called "warmoth", they were "Boogie Bodies" back in the '70s.
