| Bass players thread.... Posted: 1/21/2007 1:31:33 AM | G-man...this is my math....
$250 TOTAL for the bass...solid alder body.... $80 for a duncan on ebay....maybe $30 for tuners $15 for a Graph Tech nut.....$80 for a badass bridge....
$455 total.....I got the bass set up not too long ago and I'm happy with how it plays...a lot better than stock...not gonna sell it....and even if I was...apparently nothing new keeps it's value anyways....the investment is the music I can make with it for years to come....
Late, G-man...you both know your stuff...and if it wasn't for you guys I probably would have deleted my profile a long time ago...I can credit my sick bass rig to both you guys....but I think I'll have to go with Late on this one....

yes maybe, but you are wrong..........lol I think your math is too optimistic shipping and duty will get you on multiple auctions(add $50) plus getting a tech to install all of those parts...........(add$130)
and at the end of the day it is a squier with fancy parts, a tough reality but ,reality just the same
3rd option keep the squier stock, and just buy a warmoth then you have a back up and a really tricked out bass too

| Bass players thread.... Posted: 1/21/2007 2:28:50 AM | | I played bass with my last band even though I (still) am not a bass player. I am a singer. My guitarist kept calling me the front man, something that pissed off the drummer. Jack Bruce was in the foreground. Don't forget Flea, can't miss him onstage! My favorite local band is Headz Up, the bass player sings most of the songs and is right up front! | |

plus getting a tech to install all of those parts...........(add$130)
Bridge...simple...
Pickups...on a p bass...just gotta get a diagram and practice souldering.....
dressing the nut...OK I think I'll turn it over to a tech....
I'm a hands on type o guy...I've already set up my strat as good as it can get without a new nut....(oh and Late...it ALMOST stays in tune)
heheheeee
we'll see G-man ....we'll see....

| Bass players thread.... Posted: 1/21/2007 6:36:32 AM | Hooray for Bass players!
I picked mine up after years of being away. I got the DVD's out just to get reacquainted with it, but my classical training quickly set in. Now I am plucking along with John Mellencamp 8-) . Since I have classical training, and also played upright bass for years in school, I could actually make a decent business card.
I play BETTER by ear than I do by anything written down. I read music but can't read tablature. I just can't follow and finger and fret and everything fast enough. But get that key note in my ear and I will be playing right along.
With a degree in music and experience, and now that I have my Peavey, maybe there's a chance someone might want me to play with them. Give me a couple of months to find my fingers again and I'll be set!!

| Bass players thread.... Posted: 1/21/2007 1:41:02 PM | paulchino II that is the spirit, do some of the stuff yourself keep an accurate list of ALL actual costs let's see at the end of the day who's estimate was more accurate
Even if it is more $$$$ than you should be putting into a squier, you will learn some cool stuff about modding your bass
|
| Bass players thread.... Posted: 1/21/2007 2:52:40 PM | on the cost "topic" I got a great deal on my Peavey jump start kit. Even if you're not just starting out, its a great combo of things for a good deal. I got a Peavey bass, picks, DVD, tuner, strap, cord, case, and amp for $299 at my local music store. Its also mentioned on the Peavey website so I am sure other stores sell the kits too. Ibanez sells a very similar/identical kit for a competing price also, for those who want that.
Sure the bass isnt Def Leppard quality but it is still pretty good for what you get. Always room later for a better guitar.

| Bass players thread.... Posted: 1/21/2007 3:21:54 PM | What I WOULD change -
P-UP (vintage Duncan/vintage Fender '60s style) , CTS 250 meg pots, .05 mf ceramic capacitor, foil shielding -
What I wouldn't bother changing:
Tuners (unless they are broken/not functioning well) Bridge (unless it's broken/not functioning well) Nut (unless it's broken/not functioning well) BTW, GraphTech sells a pre-slotted nut.

| Bass players thread.... Posted: 1/21/2007 6:43:26 PM | | Sorry to just jump in here, but as it's a bass player thread and I see a lot of the recording guys in here as well, it seems like the best thread to do so in. I'm looking for a screamin' deal on a Bag End Infra or ELF Integrator to finish up a bass rig I'm putting together. If you have one or have seen on for sale I'd love to know about. I'm of course always checking ebay. Thanks for any help! | |

| Bass players thread.... Posted: 1/22/2007 1:35:34 PM | | in response to msg 1 ... did you mean bass playing is more musical or technical than it was ?... i'm mainly a guitarist but started off on bass and i would say that some of the more musical bass playing was from yesteryear ... Jone Paul Jones ... Tony Levins work in the 70's ... Bob Babbit ... James Jamerson ... Larry Graham ( so good that Prince had him on tour a couple of years ago) ... lets not forget Geddy Lee ..Chris Squire and a multitude of other seasoned players that relied on harmonic structure and note selection that in my books makes for better listening than the majority of two handed tap meisters that are so prevalent in the modern scene ... don't get me wrong i like the flashier guys too but i would rather listen to Pino Palladino's fretless playing over that stuff any day of the week ... Will Lee for President ... | |

| Bass players thread.... Posted: 1/23/2007 12:16:45 PM | In my opinion bass is a percusion instrament that is the way I look at it. with the ability to play melodies and cords. you need tap. and all finger styles to play in my opinion. I can play lead and clasical but the bass is what I love as I can use a lot more right hand tech on those big strings. I just love slaping poping and working both hands all over the neck while laying down the beat with the drummer | |

| Bass players thread.... Posted: 1/23/2007 8:28:16 PM | The bass for me is the canvas of a song. The basement to a house. When mixed with drums, and lead instruments and a good set of pipes, it makes for a cool journey while listening to a tune/recorded piece of work. My body moves with the bass, but my thoughts can flourish with the solo instruments and vocals.
All of course my opinion, no doubts.
But like most everything in life that is good. It also requires a teamwork of respectful musicianship, a relationship between players that can create magic.
My favourite bass.
Fender Precision.
Fender Sound.

| Bass players thread.... Posted: 1/24/2007 2:52:09 PM | I've been a bass player since I was 15 (wow ten years goes fast.) Ever since I saw Jason Newstead looking cool playing whatever 5 string he had at the time.
I've always been at the thrash, jump around, energetic scale of bass playing although now i've finally taken lessons to learn the other parts. ha ha ha
Anyway I play a Schecter Diamond Series Stilletto Custom 5 string and it has awesome tone. But for those Bass players out there who are looking for the ultimate toy. Get yourselves a Line 6 Variax those things are so much fun to play and also one click and it sounds like a Double Bass. One of the best things I have ever bought.
OOooh and Ashdown bass rigs are taking over the world......

Do realize though, these may be neat toys, but are next to useless in a professional setting. Modeling does not scale well at all.

| Bass players thread.... Posted: 1/28/2007 11:02:29 AM | | Oh yeah I know that for recording they don't do much but they are fun to play. Nice to just chill out and hit the acoustic bass model. | |

| Bass players thread.... Posted: 1/28/2007 6:11:30 PM | I played Bass in my bands for 15 years locally. We went from thrash, to Indie Rock, to Dark Rock, to straight Heavy Metal, then I quit for almost 10 years and started an acoustic group with my ex G/F. Not counting my junker bass that I learned on, I have been playing my '86 Fender Japanese Performer my whole career. It's got a very unique look to it, I've never seen another. I think they only made them for a couple of years. It is a 4 string two octave with a really thin neck all the way up to the body which is awesome. The only thing I don't really like about it, is that is has passive electronics, but I still get a great sound out of it with the preamp cranked, and a light compressor. My main influence is Steve Harris from Iron Maiden, so I am not a "Base" player in any respect. I don't read music and I don't know any cover songs lol.. I still write and record at home, but don't have any interest in joining up with "the life" again.

| Bass players thread.... Posted: 2/12/2007 11:14:45 AM | as a rule I hate fender basses "warwick thumb is all I can really use all my tech on" but i just found a fender acoustic that has great tone on most of the fret board and the e string rocks all the way up. well I bought it. I have taken it 2 my tech the g string needs to b moved a littel back from the edge as when i do a bar cord it falls of the neck unless i have my nails trimed down to the quick but that is all that is wrong with it.It will be great in case I have to go a busking | |

| Bass players thread.... Posted: 2/26/2007 8:25:47 AM | | I say anytime someone wants to learn a guitar or bass just look at squire or ibanez, the cheapest 4 string bass or cheapest 6 string guitar. Best start instruments personally. Squire used to be really bad but it's gotten a lot better. I wouldn't pay over 150 for a starter bass. I'm pretty sure both have a left-handed starter bass around that price. Only problem with left hand is you are a little screwed on prices and selection. Fender dominates the selection of Left-handed instruments. | |

| harmonics on a bass Posted: 5/9/2007 12:38:10 PM | I have done them before on string instruments like a cello or upright bass using a bow, but how do you do harmonics on a bass guitar?
I can tell they're in "More than a feeling" by Boston when I was listening earlier. Do you need superior quality strings for it to really work, do you have to pluck pretty hard?
Lets take a D harmonic on the D string for example. Using the one that is halfway up the string.

| Bass players thread.... Posted: 2/1/2008 4:00:26 PM | Eden's got a brand new all tube amp... the E300T...looks interesting...apparently you can adjust the bias settings for the tubes right on the back without opening it up....This one's gotta be real fresh cuz they don't have all the specs up on the site yet....
Check it out...could be a good investment...it's got KT88 tubes and apparently their other amp sounds killer when you swap out the tubes....

| Bass players thread.... Posted: 2/4/2008 1:45:03 PM | Dear Bassgirl, You need a superior quality string for EVERYTHING. I've been playing bass for 36 years now and the only string I've ever used to my satisfaction are Rotosounds. Ask for them by name - accept no substitutes, Rotosound Bass Strings! | |

| Bass players thread.... Posted: 2/7/2008 9:17:10 PM | I'm not a master but I like my Bass. I'm more of what the british might call a "plunker". I'm not attempting to go pro, though. I just do it for me.
I have a Carlo Robelli acoustic/electric bass and an old amp that barely works

| Bass players thread.... Posted: 2/9/2008 11:30:01 PM | At mid point on the fingerboard past the neck/body joint, ...on an upright, you bring your thumb around to the fretboard. While it frees up the fingers somewhat, this isn't really the purpose. With the differences in electric bass in regards to access to the upper neck, and scale, I can't see any practical use , and finger leverage would be far, far less.
With some very awkward chord voicings on guitar {Tal Farlow voicings}, ...I often bring the outside of the thumb up on the fretboard to fret the high e string if it's not do-able with the "Van Eps' 5th finger principle".
