Spelling and Grammar, does it count?

I try to get the correct spelling and grammer to the best of my ability, lol sometimes its lacking... I know I know the word but cant remember how to spell it so I pick another word.If my grammer is bad or I use to many commas in the wrong place or... too many times, well sorry I do try to go over and correct things before posting.I still miss some mistakes I notice.
If I was reading anyone else's emails or post that had really bad spelling and grammer the way I see it, I probably wouldnt want to put them on my first choice list.I would ask tho if they were aware of how annoying it can be to try to read through a garbled mess.
I had a guy IM me and he always chatted like he was drunk and he is a D&A counsellor lol.You can generally tell after a few emails or chats if the person has bad grammer or just a terrible typer. Not fixing mistakes before sending an email should have a button on here for that. Cannot Send Too Many Mistakes Must Fix First!

I know there are a ton of great guys with marginal spelling and grammar. Learning disabilities, vision problems and certain physiological conditions may have a negative impact on ones ability to communicate via keyboard. I get that part.

For me, cyber impressions are very much based on written communication style.
A message written entirely in caps drives me batty. I've seen quite a few profiles where no punctuation or capitalization can be found. If you claim to be a Rhodes Scholar, please back that up with at least a minimum of punctuation.

To me, no it doesn't matter as a pre-requisite if I am going to date someone. One of the most intelligent men I have ever met, cannot spell or type worth beans. He is extremely smart, bright, and can hold a conversation about anything at all. He just cannot type. WDM knows him as well.

For myself? I can be particular with my OWN typing but that is because I'm one of those perfectionist types when it comes to myself.

If I can read it, we're all good.

I know exactly what you mean; I am a writer and it drives me nuts. Its like a fetish I have. But you have to remember everyone doesn't spell well. Everyone has different strengths.

Every one has different abilities, typing isn’t one of mine, poor eye sight (LOL) and worn out keys don’t help (LOL) . Communicating in a second language allows grammar slips even after years and it does drive me nuts at times.
lol that’s why I hate the IM, usually have way more letters in there than I need and some get messed up in the rush- kinda embarrassing

Yes, good linguistic skills do impress me. I love to read properly spelled and worded text, but it would not make much of a difference for dating someone. Crude language would.

If its readable who gives a shit. We are not in school here. This should be a relaxing fun, site. Were not writing professional business letters so lighten up some of you anal spelling/grammar addicts. Chill OUT and relax. Dont sweat the small stuff.

I post the way I do because I be too damn nice. Not used to dealing with such cool people as on here. Humour is a tool used to communicate with both those worthy and not so worthy. Just be yourselves and ignore some folks as much as possible. We all be worthy of getting a chance to fully take advantage of this wonderful place to get to know cool folks.

"Spelling and Grammar, does it count?"...only if you can't get the meaning behind what someone has typed. If you understand the message they sending then what is wrong with soem typos and/or misspellings. I mean how do we really know what is spelled correctly or what is proper grammar...someone a long time ago told us what "it" is and we believed them, but why.
Why is it one way and not another, plus if you get down to it, "The only thing I know is what I know nothing at all", it's all assumed knowledge. We give the meanings to things not the things giving meaning to us.

So in the end who cares about typos and misspellings... are we writing or grading a PhD thesis on "The patterns of prose, from the large-scale design of completed text to the specific structures of component phrases and sentences, and the psychological
and technical problems the writer encounters in a prose composition"

LOL

That is one of my pet peeves too....sometimes I can't even understand what someone has written. I try to give the benefit of the doubt cause really, not everyone is a good speller and that person could be a really good person, someone that I might really want to meet. I guess it depends how bad it is as well. If it is just a few errors, that's okay, cause I know that sometimes I look back at my posts and it drives me crazy when I spell incorrectly, especially if it is an easy word...but sometimes we just get carried away or are tired. If it is alot of errors, I am sorry, it really does matter to me because I try to take the time to watch my grammar and especially my spelling. I just don't know why some people just don't double check or take the time and care to spell correctly before they post. Enough from me, I am starting to get sleepy and don't want to make some spelling mistakes!

So the question is would you date someone from here who had poor spelling?

No.....but maybe from somewhere else !

(think about it people... when you meet someone not online like in REAL life you have no idea how they spell or write ..the attraction is not based on that !...geesh)

I am a very easy going and accepting kind of guy. However, ppl, click a button at least for spell checks. It won't catch everything but it will help! Atrocious, I agree! I find it absurd that someone who is beyond the 7th grade does not know when or how to use they're, there, their. It certainly isn't the end of the world but it is a credit to the writer when they will take the time to correct their own mistakes. Plus some posts are (not our) so bad that I find it difficult what the person is trying to convey. It's not asking too much to... or is it two much too or to much tu... I'm with you Lainy1.

Download and install the webbrowser Firefox and use it instead of Microsoft Internet Explorer.

Firefox, available (for FREE) from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/ has a built-in spell checker and will underline in red any words not found in its dictionary.

It won't prevent you from making grammatical errors and won't alert you to using "your" when you mean "you're" or "to" when you mean "too", but it will prove to be a great benefit to anyone who has difficulty spelling.

Firefox is highly reviewed, free, more robust, faster to load and loads websites faster too.

No worries, you can still use Internet Explorer after installing Firefox and you can even use both at the very same time to compare.

Moreover, I've read somewhere in here admin, the Big Fish of this pond, recommending Firefox. It will give you less troubles in the pond than Internet Explorer will.

Get it folks!

Firefox will help with spelling. As far as punctuation and grammar go you are still more or less on your own.

I just install Firefox tonight and I think it is faster and can load more pages. I am very impressed. I suspect it uses American spelling, though. Yes, spelling, punctuation and grammar matter. The odd typo or slip is forgivable, but if you are slipping so much that you are slopping, it is not a good thing.

I would have apprehension about dating anyone from anywhere who cannot spell the basics properly; especially words like "you" and "are".

I personally want someone who cares about the impression he makes, whether in person or in writing, enough to at least spell the entire word, or make an attempt at doing so. It shows respect and like they care enough to take the time to (try to) write a proper message. There are other things on which I'd base a decision on, but spelling does matter, even if only an attempt. Laziness though often rubs off onto other areas, and when someone sends me a message "how r u?" ... well it does not make me interested.

I find that the ones that use poor grammar and spelling often fail to actually read my profile. Tonight alone I have had about 5 or 6 men message me who had not read my profile at all. They actually seem offended or put out when asked if they had read it. It is currently (and temporarily) one fairly short paragraph.

Shorthand/text typing is annoying in a profile, but OK on IM.

Sometimes typos and grammar errors are just because someone is not a great keyboardist - and they are really trying. There are also a lot of people that are not gifted in spelling, but have other talents.

Once in a while you come across a typo that will stand in the annals of history as an all-time classic, like the one I saw a couple of weeks ago. "I have a good sense of hummer". OMFG.

Absolutely! Words are communications. If you have to strain to decipher what the writer's intent was, it defeats the purpose. I figure if someone can't be bothered to write your rather than ur (and other quaint net-shorthand slang)-- then they probably what they had to say wasn't all that important.

Depends on how bad it is. If it is throughout the entire profile or post, then it says to me that the person doesn't care or doesn't know any better. If it is a few mistakes, well I would say it is just any oversite. No one is perfect but I sure try to put my best effort forward and proofread before sending things off. I have reread emails that I sent and spotted errors from time to time. I would like to date someone that puts their best foot forward also.
