| Cramps leg, muscle spasams what are they is it a circulation Posted: 5/11/2006 7:49:36 PM | Primary Causes Of Muscle Cramping as a few posters have said:
-Dehydration #1, No matter how much water you are drinking if you consume alcohol and or caffeen which are dehydrators, you may be peaing our all of the water, so beware. One study suggests and I think it is a little excessive, is that for every coffe (as an example) will dehydrate you 4, 8 ounce glasses of water. -potassium -calcium. Usually have to take a magnesium supplement for the proper absorption of calcium. Many calcuim products have magnesium supplements.
Oh and........be careful with any answers you get from the internet/chat board.
To the poster whose Dr. said to take tums for calcium........horrible advice from your Dr. True tums does have calcium, but taking tums on a regular basis will screw up your bodies acid / base buffer system which has the possible complication of stomach problems.
Good luck Dguy | |

| Cramps leg, muscle spasams what are they is it a circulation Posted: 5/15/2006 3:37:14 AM | I have had the restless leg syndrome but that can be relieved or overcome with medication. Elavil or it's generic generally takes care of that plus helps to give you a good night's sleep.
I believe that almost everyone with leg cramps has a mineral deficiency.....

| Cramps leg, muscle spasams what are they is it a circulation Posted: 11/15/2006 6:11:03 PM | Here is an excerpt from an article on medscape.
From Journal of Clinical Hypertension Muscle Cramps and Diuretic Therapy Ari Mosenkis, MD; Raymond R.Townsend, MD
Muscle cramps, notably nocturnal leg cramps, are common symptoms experienced by general medical patients, particularly the elderly.[1] Their etiology is varied; most commonly, these cramps are idiopathic. With the notable (and relatively rare) exceptions of serious electrolyte imbalances including hypokalemia, hypomagnesemia and hypocalcemia, these cramps are typically benign in nature. Nevertheless, they can be bothersome. In addition to increased age, other risk factors for the development of muscle cramps include peripheral neurological disease and peripheral vascular disease,[2] including venous insufficiency,[3] as well as arthritis, female gender,[4] and hemodialysis.
All of which sounds complicated. In plain English it means that usually cramps are caused by unknown reasons. They can be caused by too little potassium, magnesium or calcium. They can also be caused by poor circulation both in the arteries (supply) and in the veins (drainage). Nerve damage is also a cause (such as many people with diabetes experience in their feet.) It can be caused by arthritis and apparently is more common in females.
Please talk to your doctor before taking supplements containing potassium. Too much is very bad for you. Good luck. | |

| Cramps leg, muscle spasams what are they is it a circulation Posted: 11/15/2006 6:28:29 PM | Taking calcium magnesium with D in a one to one ratio. That is the magnesium is equal to the calcium. Many people have great results by just adding this in. Take it before you go to bed at night. It doesn't always work for 'restless leg syndrome' but is worth a try. Btw, the Tums is made from calcium carbonate, which is chalk pooh | |

| Cramps leg, muscle spasams what are they is it a circulation Posted: 12/21/2008 7:39:56 PM | I was really having problems sleeping because of leg cramps, to the point that while I was up walking off a cramp I got on line to see what to do to stop them. Magnesium sems to be the thing that helps me. 1000 mg of Magnesium Complex in the AM and I have been sleeping like a baby. (That and not sitting with my legs elevated -such as in a recliner- for long periods of time) Hope that helps! | |
