| 2/3d's US overweight or obese???? Posted: 7/1/2008 2:02:50 PM | I'm one of the rare ones who has the opposite problem. I'm underweight and can't seem to gain. I eat 2500 to 3000 calories/day. My main problem is I don't drive because of medical reasons and am forced to walk. I'm also a nurse where I'm on my feet all day and running the halls answering callbells and codes. My exercise is way more than needed and I burn more calories than I eat. My whole life I've been underweight although technically my BMI is 20.1 which is "normal". People still call me a toothpick, skinny, bones and other hurtfull names. Calling a thin person "skinny" is as bad as calling an overweight person "fat", please remember that, I can't count the number of times I felt so hurt by being called these names.

| 2/3d's US overweight or obese???? Posted: 7/1/2008 9:08:13 PM | | I just ignored people when I was overweight. Two years later, I get emails or numerous messages on facebook them wanting advice. I just ignore them, piss them off. Right away when they see that I lost from 280 to around 195, they assume I take pills or other stuff. | |

| 2/3d's US overweight or obese???? Posted: 7/1/2008 9:38:32 PM | In all respect, why should you give a rats @ss if someone is going to judge you at the gym or going for a jog in town or even when your out walking your dog? If your over weight and want to change how you look then you'll do it. If your too afraid to go to the gym or jog in public, then spend some money on a treadmill or eliptical trainer. There's always a way without dealing with the morons who want to be cruel.
I've never been very overweight, but I did lose 30 pounds because I was unhappy with my body. I wasn't fit in any way and I'd sweat after only 5 minutes on the treadmill, but I was doing it for me, not the idiots who choose to make fat jokes or stare.
People DO approach us when exersizing. And NOW you are hearing about it. Ok, when you say people DO approach you, I'm assuming you don't mean everybody? If one or 2 people a day appraoch you, then I'd find that appauling... but if that does indeed happen, then you tell them to mind thier f*cking business and keep going. When I'm at the gym and I see an over weight person on the treadmill or in aerobics, my first thought is "good for them, they are making a difference in thier lives". People are cruel and they make fun of you because it makes thier little feeble existances seem more fullfilled when they knock down those poeple trying to do better for themselves.
You can't put the blame on other people because of what they say to you or how they look at you, in the end if you want it bad enough you won't let anyone stand in your way.
We can all stand around and put blame on everything but ourselves, that's easy. It was my neighbors fault, my mothers fault, it was the kid who rides his bike on my streets fault, the weathers fault, the moon didn't line up with saturn in just the right way... stop making excuses and just do what you want to do.

I used to get called skinny, it does dent you a bit, but I decided enough was enough and I hit the gym - HARD. Now although not perfect (yet) I look and feel much better than I did.

If your too afraid to go to the gym or jog in public, then spend some money on a treadmill or eliptical trainer. There's always a way without dealing with the morons who want to be cruel.
I have yoga DVD's at home and wight changable dumb bells at home. I use them. But right now, since it's really nice out, I have been taking very long walks. Just haven't gotten the nerve up to do lunges in the park yet. It's coming.
I LOVE going to the gym, but it's a financial thing... at the moment. Not a being afraid to go. Besides, again... it's really nice outside lately, and summer, If I did go to the gym, it would be for the free weights and machines. Cardio will be done outside.
Ok, when you say people DO approach you, I'm assuming you don't mean everybody? If one or 2 people a day appraoch you, then I'd find that appauling...
Because I do work out/walk outside, I AM more exposed to people. And yes, it's about two or three people a day. Sometimes they approach, sometimes it people yelling at me from their car at a stop light or something.
... but if that does indeed happen, then you tell them to mind thier f*cking business and keep going.
When people yell from their car "Lose some f*cking weight. I tell them to "lose the f*cking car and walk". Sometimes it's "Stop easting so much food"... my reply.... "Stop using so much gas".
My favorite though, is when it's raining and they tell me to move my fat ass from in front of their car because it's getting wet.
We can all stand around and put blame on everything but ourselves, that's easy. It was my neighbors fault, my mothers fault, it was the kid who rides his bike on my streets fault, the weathers fault, the moon didn't line up with saturn in just the right way... stop making excuses and just do what you want to do.
I blame no one but my own fear. I know the people who say ignorant things are just that, ignorant. Most of them wouldn't know a healthy meal if it was set in front of them. Like the ones in the cars, not realizing how much gas they are wasting when they could, themselves, be walking. Nah, it's my own demons and my own fears. Which, I am sure is the same for most people.
But... fear is the mind killer.
the moon didn't line up with saturn in just the right way...
Now now.... getting into some serious stuff here. LOL!! There ARE certain times that coming between me and a steak is a very bad idea. Specifically once a month... and usually on the New Moon.

Hi Mark,
I have seen some killer thinner men's bodies. I personally love how they hold the muscle when they start packing it on. Usually very tight muscle. (Not bad at all ) Clint Eastwood is one who has always been very thin, but ya ever hear anyone complaining about his looks?
Just keep working on it. It will happen. And so what if you stay thin, you'll be a well built thin :)

| 2/3d's US overweight or obese???? Posted: 7/2/2008 8:00:55 AM | Unfortunately I am part of the 2/3 we are majority. Being thin is minority. I dont want to be thin, I want to be fit. Using weight as a method to determine obesity is wrong. We should use fat content.
but, at the same time if you dont mind the way you look, then others shouldnt either.
everyone should be happy with themselves, if your not, change its that simple.
but changing is not simple...I read somewhere earlier that the mind gives up before the body...so change your mind and you will succeed

Women are always striving to be thin, men want to be big, not overweight, but big. I also have hyperthyroid which doesn't help my situation. I will continue to eat and work out. Good luck to all you trying to lose weight, I'd gladly take donations of fat if I could.

I bike along the highways in the area and the odd time some ****face in a vehicle will say something stupid to me. One time this girly man opened up the sliding door in a van to call me retarded. Do I let them bother me or get their way ?? No. I have the right to bike along the roads. The law allows it.

http://calorielab.com/news/wp-images/post-images/fattest-states-2008-big.gif
Now, they need to explain why Colorado has almost half the obesity of Mississippi. Genetics? Diet? Exercise?
All of the southern states are on the high end, minus FL.
From many miles up looking down, it's fun to generalize. :)

| 2/3d's US overweight or obese???? Posted: 7/3/2008 1:19:45 PM | I was in Paris France a few years ago and saw a very overweight woman pass through the lobby of the hotel I was in. Everyone's jaw dropped. They would stare and point as she walked by. Even I was surprised by what I saw because she was so much larger than what you see on average over in Europe. If this had been in the states, nobody would have taken notice at all. She would be considered average. Sad!
I get fed up by the fibs people tell about why they are overweight: Hormone problems, big boned, hereditary... Who are they trying to fool? Isn't it something like less than 1% of the population has hormone problems? The bottom line is eat less and exercise more. Start by exercising some self control. I think that's something most in the USA lack.
I know of one person (a close relative) that has a completely inactive thyroid. She has to take medication for it of course. I'm positive that she would be somewhat overweight no matter what she did. However she is WAY overweight. Why? She eats the good old, gotta have a big hunk of fried meat at every meal, fatback and lard in everything, southern cooking. And she complains that she has tried but can't lose the weight. (rolls eyes)
I find it laughable the way women will spend a lifetime abusing and neglecting their bodies and think they can paint on some make-up and put on a designer outfit and look great. I say Yuck! They will do this day in and day out without ever considering a REAL diet or a trip to the gym. Many guys are the same way about themselves even though they don't use make-up. How about we try spending at least half the time exercising that we do trying to cover up our sins with make-up and fancy clothing.
Yep, exercise can be hard. The payoff is well worth the trouble though. Quit making excuses. Get off your couch potato butt and exercise. Keep in mind that you didn't put the weight on overnight. It will not come off overnight. Find the time to exercise. Make the time to exercise. Find out what sensible diet consists of. It's probably a lot different than what you think is sensable. Quit dieting, eat right! Do this, not until the pounds are gone, but for the rest of your life.
Signed, Happy to be in the USA but embarrassed by all the obesity

the way women will spend a lifetime abusing and neglecting their bodies
Actors and Actresses do this all the time. Anerexics do it. People with depression do it. People who are really happy do it. Govoners and Congressman do this.
Cutting things off... putting things under the skin... recontructing their face... throwing up.... swallowing a million uppers and downers.... tummies tucked... lips plumped... fat sucked out... fat shuved in. The list goes on. Women.... fat, thin, tall, short, beautiful, less attractive.... spend most their lifetime neglecting and abusing their body for many many reasons.
...and think they can paint on some make-up and put on a designer outfit
They can... and they do.... and America (and the world) applaud and love them for it.
I say Yuck!
No you don't. I bet you look at magazines and movies and ooo and awe over women who have abused and neglected their bodies most their lives.

and she has"close relatives" that say such negative things instead of helping and encouraging her??? I encourage her all the time. I try my best (compassionately believe it or not) to convince her that all that food is not healthy. Her problem is she believes that old fashioned idea that all that fat filled food is good and eating that much is normal. She tries her best to fill me up the same way everytime I'm visiting. Her understanding of what is healthy and normal is shared by many and I think that is what has driven us to be such an overweight society.
The responses show that many get very defensive when you lay the cards out on the table and call a spade a spade. You can come up with all kinds of excuses. You can get all huffy and say I have no compassion. The bottom line is we have no self control and have, as a society, developed all kinds of philisophical reasons why we are fat and that it's OK. We (generally speaking) refuse to just accept the plain hard truth that we overeat.
...[all kinds of people are]... Cutting things off... putting things under the skin... The list goes on. Are you so gullable and shallow to think that everybody truly believes these things are what makes a person beautiful? I don't, and if you will read a lot of the other forums regarding make-up you'll see a lot of other people feel the same way.
...I bet you look at magazines and movies and ooo and awe over women who have abused and neglected their bodies most their lives. Not hardly! Again, I say Yuck! I think the concept that a lot of makeup or cosmetic surgery (or being extremly skinny) makes one beautiful also falls into the catagory of self abuse.
I have friends that work in the operating room and they hate getting obese patients. The complications they face are staggering. Elective surgeries become life threatening when you're obese and they very much dislike having to face those challenges.
We only get one body apiece. Why in the world don't we take care of it?

I cannot believe people are trying to blame you for your obese relative.
Unless you are the one who is buying this food for her, you are not to blame.
I was a fat slob and I don't blame anyone else. It was my fault. I am the one who shoveled food in my mouth. I weighed as high as 260 lbs at one point. When people who are 300 lbs + tell me they just look at food and they gain weight, I think they are full of shit. You don't get to be that weight unless you are shovelling it in with big serving spoons.
Are you so gullable and shallow to think that everybody truly believes these things are what makes a person beautiful? I don't, and if you will read a lot of the other forums regarding make-up you'll see a lot of other people feel the same way.
I feel the same way too. Natural fit women are beautiful to me.

Negative people have no purpose in my life; doesn't matter what their relationship to me may be. The most compassionate thing I think I can do for someone that has allowed themselves to get in poor physical condition is to point it out to them without suger coating the issue. Someone needs to slap them in the face (figuratively speaking) with the fact that thay need to take care of themself because nobody else can do it for them.
It's not about beauty or looks or anything else along those lines. That's very subjective and everybody has their own ideas about it. I'm talking about actually doing what it takes to be healthy. Don't hide from the facts. Don't make excuses. Don't try to hide behind a facade of make-up. Just do it!

Depression leads to over eating....sometimes it takes a KIND heart to help the soul! Perhaps he could offer to walk w. her....gift her a month memebership to a gym or yoga class. And all the comments about overweight people being LAZY..... so FALSE! Ive seen overweight people doing cardio for HOURS at the gym... Walking miles on the track! Others have posted and used the word lazy and have equated it with being obese. Although there may sometimes be a correlation, they are not necessarily related. I know many busy and active obese people. I also know some lazy skinny folk.

Depression leads to over eating....sometimes it takes a KIND heart to help the soul! Perhaps he could offer to walk w. her....gift her a month memebership to a gym or yoga class. Why should he have to do anything to help his overweight relative? Sure, it's a nice gesture to give her a helping hand or encouragement to lose weight, but it's not his issue, it's hers. She has to want it before she can lose weight. It's like anyone with any addiction, whether it be food, alcohol, drugs... they have to want to change thier lives before they can give it up that vice. If his relative isn't going to help herself, then all the hand-holding he does won't help.
Ive seen overweight people doing cardio for HOURS at the gym... Walking miles on the track! Being "fit" has NOTHING to do with numbers on a scale , nor the size of your jeans. I couldn't agree more, however, if you feel fit and happy in your body, no matter what your size, then it shouldn't matter what other people think of you.
Another thing I often wonder is if the media is to blame for the body image that women/men think they have to have, then why aren't 2/3d's of American people average or underweight? IMO, people are obese and unfit because of thier poor lifestyle choice and major over eating. It IS as simple as it sounds... eat less and be more active.

| 2/3d's US overweight or obese???? Posted: 7/3/2008 8:26:11 PM | """"Are you so gullable and shallow to think that everybody truly believes these things are what makes a person beautiful? """""
Please read my comments on this thread and others to find out whether I am shallow or gullable.
As for the make up, I am in aggreement. I never understant why women think they need SO MUCH of it. I personally only wear a little mascera to bring out my eyes and some lip gloss or even just Blistex. It's a very rare occation to see me with lipstick on. I drink plenty of water and do not smoke. My skin is pretty great (if I do say so myself :D ). I see no need to clog it up with foundation or powder.
What's interesting is, I didn't start doing the simple make up till I started going to the gym and working out all the time. I mean, I never really wore the heavy foundations to begin with, but deffinately not when working out. I LOVED the way I looked after the work out!! My eyesd sparkled, my lips seemed fuller. Skin was even more vibrant. Over time, I stopepd using so much make up ALL the time... and even embracing the laugh lines and crow's feet. *I* found them rather attractive.
I wish more women would let their natural beauty shine through.
... I wish more people realized that some of us fat people are trying very hard to change.

I couldn't agree more, however, if you feel fit and happy in your body, no matter what your size, then it shouldn't matter what other people think of you.
No... it shouldn't matter. But sometimes it stings. Then there is that internal struggle of "Why the hell do I care what they think??? .....because I'd like to be wanted by... someone..... But I like myself! I AM improving myself after all...... but damn! It gets really lonely when no one has something good to say."
Human beings are pack animals. 2/3's of Americans are eating... together. Sometimes, someone trying to beat that statistic... just wants a friend to hug them and accept them. Pat them on the back and tell them their work is being noticed.
nother thing I often wonder is if the media is to blame for the body image that women/men think they have to have, then why aren't 2/3d's of American people average or underweight?
The media imaged causes depression. "I will never be as good/pretty as so and so". Like I said, we are pack animals. Misery loves company. Two, three, ten people who feel the same way, will come together and eat while talking about how they feel unimportant.
It's easier to find a friend who will eat with you than to find a friend who will walk five miles with you.
why aren't 2/3d's of American people average or underweight? IMO, people are obese and unfit because of thier poor lifestyle choice and major over eating. It IS as simple as it sounds... eat less and be more active.
As I mentioned in one of my earlier posts, we in America are raised with the huge portions and eating everything on the plate if we want to go out and play. Unless they are in some sort of sports in high school, MOST hear and learn nothing about eating properly until they are in their 20's. The country is slowly starting to wake up and start changing the way children are educated when it comes to nutrician.
Right now, those of us who can do it, yes, must change ourselves... BUT if we want to address the big picture issue.... the education has to start with teaching kids to put down the video game and go outside to play.... drink milk instead of soda... reach for an apple instead of a candy bar... so that THEY can grow up knowing the proper way to live a healthy life. And therefore... beating the statistic.

Sometimes, someone ... just wants a friend to hug them and accept them. We all want that. We all have our hang-ups. For some it may be eating, others depression or even just shyness. We all need a true friend we can trust when they say something like: "if you would do [fill in the blank] you wouldn't have the problem of [fill in the blank]".
It's easier to find a friend who will eat with you than to find a friend who will walk five miles with you. We need friends that will reinforce the good habits and not drag us down. Where does one find a diamond like that.
