When I was younger, I used to go 2 times a day. Now, it's 1 time and sometimes 2 times a day, during the summer. But not that much.

During the summer I have to go at about 5 or 5:30 in the morning, because by 7 it gets up to 85-90 degrees! Very hot here in the summer.

OP, I've always run as a form exercise since attending university. I tend to prefer cardio over weights: weights are so heavy! I had a time where running hurt my knees and went to the treadmill for years. Recently, I have started to hit the pavement again and don't seem to be running into these problems now. I recently completed my first 5K race and now have a standard to improve upon. My personal goal is to get my 5K time down to 20 minutes and then work towards a 10K, then half-marathon, and some day I hope to complete two to three marathons before I kick the bucket.

I wouldn't say I am addicted to running, but running (and excercise, weights, etc) have become part of my life. I usually run 3-4 times a week, lately I have been running at least 10 km, with my personal best being 13km. My plans are to run a half marathon next year, but that will require training and continued work during the winter, something I didn't do much of this past winter.

Just today I was feeling really down and crappy (personal stuff bothering me), so I came home, had a 30 min nap, went to the gym for an hour and then went for a quick run...now I feel great! For me, seeing a huge percentage of the population with health problems as a result of being overweight, is motivation for me to stay fit.

The reason you guys are addicted to running is that you are all on an endorphin and dopamine high, when you don't run, the levels of these chemicals are reduced. This is what causes you all to be crabby and run down!

I carry my running gear with me all the time in a rucksack that weighs about 30lb on an average day. The best runs are where I've got a train to catch or people to meet , where I've got strict and limited time to get there, I've no choice but to go flatout, no choice!! Besides I always like to run with an aim in mind, e.g. run 4 miles to get my groceries, load up my rucksack and run back :-) Most of the time I'll run a few miles into my gym, hammer the abs or obliques in 20 minutes or so, then continue on run til im out of juice

Hi, yup aerobic exercise does release endorphines that make you feel happy, but this doesn't result in lowered endorphines afterwards (ala sugar and insulin relationship). But yeah we do enjoy the high. Is good

am actually getting back into it. particular like 5 to 10k. but 5k races are so fast just like to do longer distances. fastest 5k 17:30 in high school. not very fast by competitive standard but better than a non-competitive runner. since got older picked up weigh. actually lost about 50 pounds over the past two years. am at about 190. which to me is still to much weigh for long distance. would like to lose about 10 more pounds. and really get back into it. made a plan to be back into it by fall of this year

Haha - one of my coworkers would say I'm addicted... I go 6 times a week usually and my run distances are usually 8-8.5 miles.

I love it - and I've lost 30lbs doing it.

I love running as well as everyone else here, I was recently divorced and it helped me through it. lost 40 pounds in 6 months, I've run 4 half marathons this year and I'm running twin cities marathon this year. for me I think its a great cardio workout if I can talk when I run, if I'm not running with someone, I'm singing out loud. Its great on my abs too :)

Hey guys,

Glad to hear all the good running stories. I know how much it can be a positive force in people's lives - weight loss, combatting addiction, etc. I run mostly to fight depression. I run to be alone. I do other sports socially, like badminton and I just joined the rowing team (which I absolutely love - all serious runners should try it because it's awesome cross-training once you get into it).

I have always had to work for speed. I usually run 40 - 50 miles per week, with warmups, pace runs, intervals, and long runs. This year, I ran a very rugged, hilly half marathon in 2:06, and a 10km trail race in 50:23. I am planning to run the Royal Victoria half marathon in October, which is a huge event. However, I have been sick with a really bad chest cold for the last 6 days, and am just now going to go and try a run. It's been killing me not to, but watch the chest colds, guys. I tried to run through one last year, and it hung on for six weeks. I went to the doctor and got antibiotics as it had morphed into a stubborn case of bronchitis.

I wish everyone the best of luck in their running endeavors, and highly recommend this website for articles and forums: www.runnersworld.com.

Yes,
I love to run to. I have started at the beginning of Jan. Lately I been having alot of problems with my knees, being very sore.. So I haven't been running anymore. Really running is the one workout, I truly love to do. I have the best of shoes, & do all the stretching. Maybe I tore some cartilage. Anybody have any pointers, on how to protect your knees, when running long & far??????????

I ran a ton back in the day.Back in highschool we had a track team and we practiced everyday.Loads of indoor running during the winter. It was excruciating though.I only stuck with it cause i wanted to belong to extra-curricular activities and in that school,if you didnt, you were either a stoner,or a complete dork.
I gravitated towards doing alot more bicycling than running after highschool.I just found it more invigorating.Especially when coasting 50+mph down those cool backroad hills!Ha Ha Ha!
Nowadays,if i so much as try to relive my past with a mere half mile deal around the park or whatever,my knees pay dearly!...To say the very least!
But.....Funny thing is, that i can still do these 30-40 and 50yd ballfield sprints, and the knees are just fine.
It may be just as well with me being this semi bodybuilder type anyway.Besides.I'm gasping like a geezer chasing a goose after just a couple minutes of jogging.
If it werent for the knees though,i really seriously think that i'd just keep at it with the jogging.Through thick and thin until i was a gaunt 150 instead of a burly 180.I do agree that the endorphins that it gives are unmatched.I can never ever attain the same effect by riding my bicycle 25-30 miles as i can with running 5 miles, which was standard fare for me back in the day.
I get a similiar effect from hitting the heavybag but it wears off after a couple hours.I even get a similiar effect from curling, chinning and pushups, but it only lasts for around an hour.i remember when i could run 5 miles without any knee problems and i'd be flyin high for 10-12 hours afterwards.I really miss those days!
I always did have problems with gasping alot and feeling greatly distressed during the first mile of my run,but after that,I remember my body always adjusting itself and i would feel this incredible blissfull numbness and tranquality after that first painfull and gaspfull mile.
That feeling along with the after effects were practically unbeatable.

Wow 80-95miles a day, a lot, but amazing in my eyes. Great dedication and focus. Myself, 25-30miles a day. I , too, feel guilty and bumped out when I miss a day.
Love your body, Tes.

I was. Now I hurt my knee (too much too soon) and cannot run until I visit the ortho. The withdrawal symptoms are agony ... I find myself visiting "runnersworld.com", looking at the latest running apparel and feel like the outside looking in. Everyone running ... I am sitting on the bleachers getting spinters up my butt.

Hello AbitMuch---Running gives me a feeling of freedom and security that not even money- or love can offer. It belongs to me and no-one can take it away, not even an injury. The body is built to run and it promotes healing. I just started slowing my runs down from 9 minutes a mile to 14 minutes a mile so I don't injur myself. It's all about TIMING..

Invest in a GPS Cad watch it will be your friend and it's worth the price And TAKE Glucosamine-Chondroitin! You'll be amazed at the healing. Doctors won't share to much information because they want your money! I know, I worked with Ortho Surgeons- and dietary supplements are a very very important part of fighting off free radicals!

I don't think I'm addicted to it but I enjoy going out for a run 4 times a week. I also *really* enjoy races. Yesterday, I just completed my first "official" 10K run in downtown Toronto in 1:08:03. Let me tell you, it was such a high for me to be able to shave off 6 minutes from my previous time! Of course, as I get better/stronger, I will get faster and this will be reflected in my achievements.

I usually run on Mondays but I think tonight will be a well deserved rest.

I prefer to run with a group. I listen to my music but I like the group environment. Plus it's good to have support when you think you can't go on any longer and there is someone telling you "come on, just a few more minutes, we're nearly there!".

THere is a "culture" in running... as I pass other runners I always say hello... it's cool.

Loopy

I wish more people knew about the culture. When I was in the military, running on base, there would always be a greeting, a wave, or at least a nod whenever someone runs by the other way. Now running fitness trails, I'm lucky if 1/3 people would even acknowledge me. At least I still try to keep it going, but can't help but feel stupid when I wave at someone and they don't even look in my direction... I noticed the older, more experienced runners are generally more likely to make a friendly gesture.

Anyway, I wouldn't say I'm addicted to running, but I get my 18-25 miles a week. Looking forward to doing next nearby marathon.
