Cinders - I've never been to Poland, but in my opinion I think you should go to Auchswitz.

yes you may go and be horribly affected, but if you don't go, you might regret not going, and never get the opportunity to go again

I've never been to Poland but would like to. My real fathers family are Polish, i've kept my surname which confuses a lot of people lol, knowone can say it..
Also there's a lot of history to my ancestory, which i'd love to find out. I've tried to find out about it with companies over here, but they just send my money back because they can't find anything.

Yes i agree with you gg, when i was at work today i was reading up about it all, and even reading it made very upsetting reading, but its something i need to do, and im determined i will do. I dont know if anyone has been on the websites for Auchswitz, there were three camps, but there not exactly what i expected them to look like from the outside. Old brick houses and trees and countryside, i guess i was expecting them to be sparse cold places. But ofcourse there will be bits like that too. But yes i will definately be going georgie, im off weekend after next so i will report back and maybe put some pics on my profile if anyone is interested.

My Grandfather was involved in the liberation of Auchswitz. He was one of the first of the allied troops to enter the camp. He rarely spoke of his experience but I'll always remember him saying that the smell and sight of the dead and dying would never leave him.

Its somewhere I plan on going. Why, I dont really know to be honest, partly because of my grandfathers history with the place I suppose is one reason. Hard to explain another reason. Morbid curiosity perhaps or a sense of bewilderment as to what it must have been like live through the hell that was Auchswitz.

I think im going for some of the same reasons as you jack, but i also want to pay my respects to the people that suffered in away than most of us could never begin to imagine. And hopefully never will.

yeah its not as you imagine at first cinders, but then you remember that the camps were intended to fool the occupants as well into looking thinking they were nice places too, not the death camps they were.

its subtle things like this that hit you constantly as you go around. Its a place where you will find men and women weepeing as you go around so you need to be ready to support your friends

Thats another thing i hadnt thought about captain, that people are going to be openly weeping, and ofcourse thinking about it its pretty obvious that is going to be happening. Im glad i opened this thread, cos its made me already start to prepare myself rather than going in there blind to it and not being able to cope. So thanks for everyones accounts so far, or interesting information. Its really welcome.

yeah thats very wise julesw, just that some of your friends may find the Auschwitz thing too much to contemplate going, and visiting there on your own is gonna be highly traumatic

Thank you for that Rio, I leave at half six tomorrow morning and im actually staying in Krakow (and i must admit after being so cold in London this week im actually really worrying about the cold tomorrow when i get off the plane!) A heavy fall of snow is expected just after we arrive so it will be very Christmasy.

And yes I will definately be visiting Auschwitz on probably Monday, I know its going to be very sad, but its something i feel i need to do.

This is such a cool place, logged on to check in for my flight for tomorrow online! I went to Auchswitz really sad, will tell you all when i get back about it, but everyone who said it was going to be a humbling experience was right. I dont think ile ever quite feel the same about things again after seeing all the suffering.

I just got back half an hour ago, had a fantastic time, but also visitied auchswitz which was very sad indeed. After seeing schindlers List and the Holocaust many years ago i was very touched by what those people endured, but actually visiting and seeing exactly what they went through was very hard and very emotional.

[Adolf Hitler went to Poland on 1939 - liked it so much, he stayed there for a while, but then got bored and gave it to Russia, who stayed a bit longer. ]

LMAO! but I don't think the people who lived through the war and communism would appreciate that comment too much
