Im off to Poland shortly..

Dont normally plan things apart from flight in / out..

anyone got any recommendations? .. (ideally reference travelling in Poland and not about illegal immigration/soft labour/single mothers/racism ..which is usually how the mention of Poland in a thread goes..no idea how though!)

Um, Poland is quite a big country - would you care to elaborate as to where you're flying to, and maybe what kind of things you're thinking of wanting to do?

Personally I love Zakopane and Krakow, and there's loads to see and do around both places.

Must go back there soon I think, haven't been there for far too long :)

Flying into Warsaw, flying out of Krakow.

Inbetween no real idea, museum i want to see in Warsaw, going to auschwitz (at the moment).. heard about a castle in Malbork i may pop along too..

Is Zakopane the mountains?

Kind of things i want to do.. explore the history, love the wildlife but think its most probably too far to see the wild bison. Like cafes/culture/ people/ walking/ watching/ learning and picking my nose (though obviously not in company)

Im free most of the time there so feel free to pop across and buy me a coffee...

Really want to know what people have seen/done whilst visiting then i can decide if id like to do it too.

Zakopane is a smallish town in the Tatra mountains, great for winter sports, hiking etc.
Last time I went there (October, many years ago) I took the cable car to the top with pals and we yomped home (about 25k I think), was a most superb hike - shame I'm not fit enough to do that at the moment!
Oh, a couple of places just outside town also do touristy 'Polish nights' - be warned, the highlander tea is VERY potent!
There was also an 'international' market there several times a week and I picked up some great bargains there (walking boots especially).
Re wildlife, saw bears ambling down the street at about 6am one morning from my hotel bedroom window! (when we went in April many years ago - lots of snow too - fun stuff!)

Morskie Oko is a glacial lake not too far outside Krakow\Zakopane, which is stunning and well worth a look - take horse drawn 'bus' up to the site - If I remember correctly the cafe at the top does a most superb hot choc :)

There is also a superb salt mine which does a tour (but the name escapes me completely) and it has some of the most amazing carvings and stuff down there.

Auschwitz and Birkenau (sp) are very very eerie and strangely moving but I was *glad* (not the right word but you know what I mean) that I went there.

Krakow Cathedral is absolutely stunning, and when we were there last you could go up the tower - me being a raging girly woos who is terrified of heights and suffers with vertigo stayed with my feet firmly on the ground, but I was told that I missed a real treat.

I think I vaguely recall the castle you've mentioned, if I remember correctly it's been used in a fair few films and is *right* on the Poland/Czech border? If that's the one, then yes we went there too........ it was ok.

That's my small experience of Poland - found the people very warm, friendly and welcoming everywhere we went - tended to steer clear of 'touristy' pubs / cafes etc and searched out the little back street bars that the locals use - and had an amazing time and yes I want to go back there fairly soon with my son as he's now a bit older and might appreciate the place a bit more.

Would love to pop over for a coffee with you in the square in front of the Cathedral, but sadly my schedule doesn't allow for jetting off to meet random strangers in foreign countries until after Christmas :( lol

I lived near there for a year, and the hype is correct. Near christmas especially, they have perfect christmas markets.

I went and in the square is a covered market, selling hand made tree decorations. There were children singing, snow on the ground, wine mulling and meat roasting. It couldn't have been more perfect if i had been in a film!

i don't understand why anyone would want to visit auschwitz?unless you have family who died there what is the point of going and seriously upsetting yourself.there have been many slaughters of innocent civilians over the centuries not just in poland.i know it was a hell of a lot of people but there was a hell of a lot of people killed in other events.cambodia, vietnam, iraq, burma, hiroshama, rwanda, zimbabwe etc.many are still happening.maybe now we could spend more money and effort and spare more thoughts for the other millions of people who are suffering.surely its time to move on from past events and concentrate on saving people hanging on to live now.just a thought.no offense meant to anyone.
