Socialist ideals have worked so well that I can't imagine a more effective system. I was never an advocate of socialism, it's just obvious that turning EVERYTHING over to private industry doesn't work and that's why we have public services like police, fire responders, public highways, health systems and airports.

Canada has stricter rules about what is allowed to come in; some things in the food and drug area are stricter. She also sneered about the french speaking people. I take issue with blaming the rural parts of this country for our problems, and to think that racism exists only in the country or south is ridiculous. Look at the most violent racial problems in the last 40 years and they're all riots in big cities, all over the nation.
there is a huge cultural lag between literate people who understand the realities of modern civilization and those who think the answers to life are much more simple. They don't have a sense of history other than their own families and forget about them having any knowledge about world history or even US history. They're very easy to feed stupid, old-fashioned ideas and they love'em. These values are inherited from the days when America was an agrarian society and farms and farmers were our most valuable commodity. They were on top of the heap, politically. They eat it like popcorn with soda.
That's one of the most arrogant, biased pieces of shite I have ever seen.
Just because one lives in a city doesn't mean you are either literate or "understand the realities of modern civilization", have you ever seen 'Jaywalking' on Leno? These rural 'bumpkins' you dismiss fought most of our wars for us, and have a better grip of history than you might imagine.
You say 'old-fashioned' like a curse word, but many of these values are the bedrock of our society even today. Yes, they are sometimes taken too far, but so are the ideas of feminists or history revisionists who blame white males for all the countries ills, you must not throw out the wheat with the chaff. Honesty, faithfulness, a day's work for a day's pay, helping your neighbors, belief in a power higher than ourselves, all old-fashioned values that matter today.
Farmers? At the top of the heap? What are you smoking? 95% of these people grew food SO THEY COULD EAT! Any 'political' power they might have had was lost in the Civil War, as industrialists came out of that owning the country, North, South, East and West. Most of these folks barely get by, even today. If they do get ahead it only takes one bad season to wipe out a life's work. Thank God for our farmers, because of them America feeds much of the world. If the trucks stop running to the cities you'll all be starving and fighting for crusts of bread in a month, you better hope these 'bumpkins' keep doing what they always have, working!
We are indentified by rural america as an outside influence trying to ruin the american system. Rural America is politically motivated by fear of the outside world more than anything else.
The United States is so isolated from the rest of the world in intellectual thoughts and history that we have very little contact with "checks and balances" against what we're told about our own past by an educational system with no world perspective.. only right wing; especially in rural areas. They make sure the books children are taught about history from in school contain ONLY THE BEST information about the American system and how it works each time, every time.
Rural America IS America, as much a part of it as any urban area, and what they are afraid of is people who think they know it all telling them how to live, just what you seem to want to do.
All the schools are messed up, country and city, so don't point you're finger down here, point your finger in the mirror (thx to Kid Rick)!
Meanwhile, we in the cities and educational centers are finding out how it DOESN'T work and have been finding this out alot in the twentieth century. It's called "critical thinking" and it scares the HELL out of rural America. They blame us for having lost their farms to corporations. They blame us for every change in the world that's not favorable to them. They THINK we in the cities control the world economy, which we DON'T. We merely adapt to it, just like them.
Trust me, rural America knows about the problems with the system, and you d*mn sure have no corner on "critical thinking". The best proof of that is that statement, I thought you had more sense than that. Rural America doesn't blame 'city folk' for their farms or changes in the world, but we do say "when you have a problem in the city fix it, but leave us the h*ll alone!" Don't try to force us to live as if we are in a city, that's why we don't live there!!

Forums such as this are supposed to be a means of fostering this adaptation, but when such blatantly prejudiced cr*p is put out such as this no wonder we don't always listen well. It's the same old song, 'listen to us, we know what's best for you crackers".
The examples of "good old conservative values" you listed aren't confined to rural folks, in fact most KKK members in 1925 lived in cities, that's how they grew so big, playing on the fears of city folks about losing their jobs to minorities, in league with the Nazi's. I've read the histories, maybe you should too.
You take historical facts and judge them in the light of today's mores, and blame that past on the rural folks? They had virtually no political power, they were vastly outnumbered by your 'sort', maybe you need to recognize that "we" caused the problems and not "them".
By becoming a wealthy nation and modern communication technology, the world has become smaller and we in the cities have changed a great deal in a short time. However, the majority of us are still blind in this country and that's why we have the blind leadership we now have.
And not all of the change in the cities has been for the better, but I guess you forgot about the slums, crack babies, schools with metal detectors (20 years ago), the riots, the simmering racial problems (i.e. Rodney King), etc. No, the country is not immune from these issues, but the city exported them to us, not the other way around.
Just because we do not see alike doesn't mean either side is blind, but as long as you take the stance that 'rural America' is the problem you can be assured your vision is flawed too. Unless you have a garden behind your house I suggest you hug a farmer today.
