| Hell: Is it Scriptural? Posted: 1/4/2006 5:10:54 PM | Though I personally find it impossible to believe that there is such a place as Hell where God subjects people to eternal torment for the sins committed in one brief human life that really amounts to a blip on the screen of eternity, I cannot deny that there seems to be some scriptural basis for this belief, as many here have pointed out. Nevertheless, as many others have pointed out, the scriptural basis for this belief -- in its crudest forms, certainly -- is far less extensive than many acknowledge and so open to a variety of interpretations and understandings that it might behoove many to take a far more "agnostic" (ie, "I don't really know") position on the subject than they do.
Scripturally supported or not, this belief so defies all reason and so thoroughly contradicts the idea of a loving, just and merciful God that presumably all scripture-loving persons cherish that it, in effect, constitutes a slander on the character of God and turns many away from the Christian faith altogether. Is it really necessary to believe in Hell to be a Christian? Would it not be wise for those who do claim that title to tread very carefully when they address this issue? Perhaps it only SEEMS to supported by scripture. Perhaps we are entitled to use the intelligence that God gave us and follow the advice given by Jesus, ie, "why do ye not judge for yourselves what is right?" on this issue.
Perhaps also, every single word that we read in the Bible did not, in fact, proceed directly from the mouth of God and some if not all of the scriptural basis for this belief was, in fact, added to what we know today as the Bible by fallible human beings for their own purposes. As I duck the inevitable slings and arrows that are sure to come my way from those who insist that belief in the absolute "inerrancy" of the Bible is an essential part of Christian belief, I will frankly admit that this question is properly a subject for another thread. Bomb away at me in one of those if you must, please!
Food for thought, anyway... thanks to the OP for this thread. In my opinion, it is an important question. Thanks to all who are making thoughtful contributions here.

re the quoting diddly (hehe) here's how you do it:
[ quote] Place your quoted text in here [ /quote]
but remove the space that I've placed after the [. If you hit reply and then look just above the smilies ther is a little tutorial there for ya too.
Art, I think these kinds of discussions often come down to the question of the inerrancy of Bible. And we will have to respectfully disagree on that, my friend.

| Hell: Is it Scriptural? Posted: 1/7/2006 7:49:47 AM | SKYPOET: I agree........Georgy Girl has the correct answer. Have study the bible hebrew and greek for 33 years and the translation of the greek and hebrew words for hell are correct as some here have expressed their meanings. You must consider the usage of the words back in the days when they were written. | |

| Hell: Is it Scriptural? Posted: 1/7/2006 8:13:19 AM | Any scripture that related to hell, or the everlasting lake of fire, is symbolic, mean, when you die, sinner, your dead. If God doesn't forgive you, you (your name, personily, existense) is tossed into this lake of fire. It is utter destruction..something God can reverse. Destruction does not mean life, therefore, if you wanna fry in hell, go for, you'd never notice the difference anyway..your dead
iammrright:
good answer on this one: at least i think so because everything i have studied on the greek and hebrew scriptures leads me to this same understanding: since the question is Hell: Is It Scriptural ......here are a few scriptures to support the understanding that iammrright has given above:
please see: Ecclesiastes 9: 5 & 10 "The living are conscious that they will die; but as for the dead they are conscious of nothing at all.........All that your hand finds to do, do it with your very power, for there is no work nor devising nor knowledge nor wisdom in Sheol the place to which you are going. (If they are conscious of nothing, they obviously feel no pain) also: Revelation 20:13, 14 "The sea gave up those dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. (so the dead will be delivered from hell) ........(the lake of fire......"Which means the second death (no ressurrection is possible from the "second death") please read: Revelation 21:8 which tells what sort of people are thrown into the lake of fire.
