| hidden movie gems Posted: 9/11/2006 8:17:06 PM | | I seen this movie called "Portrait of America" or something along those lines. It's some odd short stories. The first one is really disturbing, but I thought it was cool as a whole. | |

| hidden movie gems Posted: 4/8/2007 4:25:36 PM | Frankenhooker.....definitly one to watch after a couple beers. Dead Men Wear Red Shoes....something about vampire hookers, but they don't bite the neck....
Bless Them All...about an Allied unit in Java or some such place during WW2...odd little piece.
Lots of old movies out there....or...just check your local CBC listing of APTN for mouldy oldies.

| hidden movie gems Posted: 4/8/2007 5:10:55 PM | "A Bronx Tale"
It's got a great moral storyline about doing the right thing.
I'll never forget De Niro telling his young son "The saddest thing in life is wasted talent"

| hidden movie gems Posted: 4/8/2007 9:44:08 PM | Bill'y Wilder's "Ace In The Hole" aka "The Big Carnival" 1959
A terrific movie with Kirk Douglas as a slimey reporter who turns the simple rescue of a man trapped in a mine into a 3 ring circus of reporters, tv cameras and souvenier hawkers.
A brutal film about how 15 minutes of fame will make anybody sell their souls or another man's life .

| hidden movie gems Posted: 4/9/2007 9:43:11 AM | | could everyone please tell a bit about what the movie is about? | |
|
| hidden movie gems Posted: 4/9/2007 1:33:35 PM | Perhaps it'd be best if you go to imbd.com and type in a movie title in their search engine. Then you avoid being spoiled by too much plot information from anyone. The movie synopsis/premise is included among all the information on each movie in the database there. | |

| hidden movie gems Posted: 4/9/2007 1:52:47 PM | My Favorite Year - 1981 with Peter OToole - hilarious
Lost in America - Albert Brooks
Pop of Greenwich Village - Eric Roberts and Mickey Rourke ( in the only great performance either ever did!!)
|
| hidden movie gems Posted: 4/9/2007 7:48:27 PM | | Silent Running...a neat little SF number with a message in a bottle...for real! Earth ruined, and large "arc" type ships holding viable ecological treasures for earth, ordered destroyed...one man goes nuts and does in crewmates to keep one bio-dome going...under the care of a small robot that plays poker. | |

| hidden movie gems Posted: 4/9/2007 8:03:23 PM | I'm surprised no one listed "Orgazmo"
Matt Stone and Trey Parker's first full length movie...
Its my number one all time favorite movie that no one has seen and fewer have heard of.
I mean hell, A devout Mormon from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints gets pulled into the Porno industry...
Ron Jeremy is in it too! | |

| hidden movie gems Posted: 4/9/2007 8:10:47 PM | ^^^I've seen it. Pretty funny.
Another new British comedy that's in the vein of 'Waking Ned Devine' is called 'Keeping Mum'. And "Catch a Fire" is a good movie as well.
|
| hidden movie gems Posted: 4/10/2007 5:55:59 AM | Cidade de Deus (City of God) - Not hugely well known in the UK as far as I know. Not sure how this did anywhere else.
Two boys growing up in a violent neighbourhood of Rio de Janeiro take different paths: one becomes a photographer, the other a drug dealer.
Simply incredible film, based on a true story which is shocking. Its subtitled but comes (I am pretty sure) right at the top of my faves list.
Also be careful if you are into your classic Volkswagens... you'll be needing to watch it twice maybe 3 times or however long it takes you to stop jumping off the sofa screaming 'LOOK ANOTHER ONE!'

|
| hidden movie gems Posted: 4/10/2007 8:19:07 AM | The Red Violin. 1998
Fantastic movie! The cinematography is amazing!
I noticed someone mentioned "Les Choiristes" earlier. I loved that movie so much, that I had to buy it. If you're really into foreign/non-english movies,a couple of suggestion I would have would be "Cinema Paradiso"(Italian),and "The Barbarian Invasions"(French-Canadian).
Oh..and go back into the old movie section ,and find Fellini's "La Strata".
|
| hidden movie gems Posted: 4/10/2007 8:56:34 AM | I recommend: What Dreams May Come - Robin William & Cuba Gooding, Jr. The New Guy - Dorky, but hi-larious The Imposter - Gary Sinise - "say no more, say no more" | |

| hidden movie gems Posted: 4/10/2007 4:12:08 PM | American Dreamer ... campy, cute, a bit sappy, but worth the watch if you like that sort of thing.
JoBeth Williams, Tom Conti, Marcello Mastrantonio ... she's a bored housewife who wins a trip to Paris for submitting a "Write in the style of ... " chapter in a contest, gets into an accident, thinks she's the character she loves to read; Conti is the son of the "supposed" author (when in fact he writes the books), they meet and get entangled in real life storylines like the books.
The scene with her under the table with the Russians at an embassy party, drunk, and the table moving in time to their singing ... cracks me up every time. The scene where she grinds a pound of metal out of his little Porsche 356 Cab's tranny ... not so endearing.
The acting by JoBeth is definitely over the top to great effect, and Tom Conti is his usual understated, exasperated self.

| hidden movie gems Posted: 4/10/2007 11:35:33 PM | For me, my hidden gems are:
The Whoopee Boys - 1986 - one of the funniest grossout comedies I've ever seen.
Bachelor Party - 1980-something, I forget - I will never forget "the Donkey Scene". I's also referenced in Clerks 2, and for good reason.
Strange Days - really good science fiction movie written and produced (but not directed) by James Cameron. Never thought about it, but he's really heavily influenced by Philip K.****and Robert Heinlein.
Dark City - another really good obscure sci-fi flick (from the late 90's, iirc). Very dark and dystopic and a brilliant thriller.
Spartan - the only David Mamet movie I've seen and loved. Brilliantly done.
Suspect 0 - Interesting thriller that explores remote viewing and and serial killers.
A Scanner Darkly - The only true novel-to-movie translation. It makes very little sense to anyone who hasn't read the book, and the book itself doesn't make sense to a lot of people. A must-have for any Philip K.****fan. And that animation concept that Linklater uses is just awesome.
Screamers - another Philip K.****offering, based off a short story called Second Variety (very cool short story) about robots that breed and plan to eliminate the human race. While it roughly follows the storyline of the short story it's based in, it sticks to it very closely from beginning to end in concept far better than anything prior to A Scanner Darkly ever did.

| hidden movie gems Posted: 4/11/2007 4:32:40 AM | I'll add my vote to "The Machinist" & here's a few of what I reckon are hidden gems:
"La Haine" - this won a few awards but I've met very few people who've seen it. It follows what happens to 3 lads after the Paris riots of the early 90's. "The Happiness of the Katakuris" - the most insane musical you're ever likely to see, directed by Takashi Miike (Audition, Ichi The Killer) "Festen" - Dogme film (but don't let that put you off). It's a drama about a family set at a big family get together. "Dust Devil" - Horror film written & directed by Richard Stanley (Hardware) set in Africa. Unlike any other horror I can think of. "Society" - Horror film about a teenager who feels like he doesn't fit in with his posh family & classmates. Then finds out why. "Save The Green Planet" - Bit hard to explain, this one. Can't recommend it highly enough though.
