| hidden movie gems Posted: 5/8/2007 8:27:32 AM | | Reservoir Dogs is a good film, but is it really hidden? I don't know about elsewhere but in the UK that & Pulp Fiction were HUGE. Besides, it's basically a remake of a Hong Kong film called City On Fire, which is a bit of a hidden gem, incidentally. As are the Infernal Affairs films (it's a trilogy) - the first one of which was just recently remade as The Departed, & touted as a Martin Scorsese film (rather than a remake). What is it with America remaking foreign films just a few years after their original release anyway - are that many people so averse to subtitles? | |

If you like this you'll probably also like The Prestige; similar vein, but I thought an ever better story - and I liked the Illusionist a lot.

| hidden movie gems Posted: 5/23/2007 11:11:23 PM | Martin - Directed by George A Romero, a vampire movie, all I can say is that it is perfect in ways most movies aren't. Tim - Stars Mel Gibson, made the same year as Mad Max. An older woman (Carries mother!) falls in love with Tim, a slightly mentally handicapped younger man. Has good performances, unusual theme, ie: It's fine to have a husband who's like a pet/child/lover. Razorback - A dingo ate my baby, etc.! Except it is a large wild boar, not a dingo. Company of Wolves - Little Red Riding Hood. Pretty! Paulie - A kids movie about a parrot. They get the parrot right and if you like parrots, you'll like this movie it has them. | |

Not already mentioned (as far as I've seen so far)... Dr Strangelove - Peter Sellers at his finest. Arsenic and Old Lace - The classic over-the-top comedy. "Not the Melbourne method, Johny" Crimen Ferpecto - (Spanish w/Eng subtitles) a very dark comedy. Les Visiteurs (French w/subtitles) NOT the American remake, another 'wacky' comedy
EDIT: one more I forgot.... Eqqus. On the Waterfront- Brando as angst-ridden boxer "I could'a been a contender" Quackser Fortune has a Cousin in the Bronx- Gene Wilder as a shyte-toting Irishman, odd and eerily funny.
I've got more, but most are mainstream, not really hidden gems...

What is it with America remaking foreign films just a few years after their original release anyway - are that many people so averse to subtitles?
Rory, it really the big studio backed films in America that fall into that category. It's all about investing in a movie that will return their investment. Most films do not make their money back, so the studios are afraid of taking a risk on an original film. They happen but more so with American Independent films that don't pay much attention to the $$ aspect of film making. There are some great Indie films made, but they usually get picked up by the studios for distribution AFTER they create their own buzz.
Tim - Stars Mel Gibson, made the same year as Mad Max. An older woman (Carries mother!) falls in love with Tim, a slightly mentally handicapped younger man. Has good performances, unusual theme, ie: It's fine to have a husband who's like a pet/child/lover.
Terrific little film. One of Mel Gibson's best performances ever. Piper Laurie played the older woman.

The government researcher wakes up to find all human life on the planet completely destroyed. That is, until he encounters a lovely young woman (Alison Routledge) and a trucker (Pete Smith). Tension mounts as the survivors adapt to their new reality and try to learn to trust one another."
I specifically like the fundamental understanding of science. What happens could blow some nerds' minds.
I second "My Life as a Dog" -- foreign film, hilarious, could never be made here in america because we're too uptight about sexuality
Anything by the Coen brothers... Miller's Crossing has got to be the best old tyme gangster movie with an actual plot that I have ever seen
Blood Simple, again the Coen brothers.
Little Man Tate, As Good as it Gets, Finding Forrester... all movies with tremendous heart. Jakob the Liar starring robin williams. The man with no face, house of D, pay it forward
For action... In the line of fire, Eragon -- Recent dragon movie
B&W -- the incredible shrinking man, fail safe
The one that had me laughing my ass off the most -- The Gods Must Be Crazy
Three Days of the Condor, Papillion,
Freaky -- Adaption, Lucky Number Slevin (best headtrip of the past few years)
Most relaxing documentary -- Winged Migration, I almost fell asleep in the theatre. I swear I left the building feeling like a totally different person.
Hopscotch -- older spy flick with walter mathau, clever.
Best Tongue in Cheek -- Sarah Silverman's Jesus is Magic La Femme Nikita -- foreign action film which spurred on shows like Alias Manufacturing Consent -- Noam Chomsky -- a dry docomentary that might, gasp, make you think.

| hidden movie gems Posted: 5/27/2007 5:41:30 AM | Aquirre Wrath of God The film is an early Werner Herzog effort and is his first collaboration with Klaus Kinski. The film is set in Peru during the Spanish Conquest of South America and the film follows Klaus Kinski as Aquirre as a party searches for the fable city of gold and end up drifting aimlessly in the huge Amazonian jungle. Klaus Kinski is amazing as the mad general and the scenery is simply amazing to view. | |

"People who like ths also liked": Domino

Im a similar vein there's two I'm thinking of that I cant remember the names of.
One had a bunch of guys transporting a boat over a mointain in South America to build an opera house in Brazil.
The other was, I think, Klaus Kinski taking a huge block of ice into the Amazon ans had this great line: "Ice is power".
"Ice Pirates", an SF comedy was fairly brilliantly funny too. Especially the "space herpes" bug the ship became infected with that looked like a rabid tribble.

| hidden movie gems Posted: 5/30/2007 7:14:35 AM | One of my favorite American Indie films ever is The Tao of Steve.
From IMDb: In his early 30s, the beer-bellied Dex has things figured out. He's widely read in philosophy, he's studied Steve McQueen the prototypical cool American hero, and he's distilled Buddhism and Taoism into three laws that make him a hit with women: don't express desire, do something heroic in front of her, then retreat. A part-time job with young children, beer, guys, Frisbee golf, pool, poker, his dog Astro, and sex: what could be missing? Then, at his ten-year college reunion, Dex meets Syd, and the "Tao of Steve" may not be enough to get him what he wants. Plus, Syd remembers something important that Dex has forgotten. Can a cool smart guy, 50 pounds overweight, find his bliss?
It was original, very well-written, very funny and true, and I think it cost about $8.95 to make.
