My profile is truthful regarding my size, and I either get responses from men who like bbw and tell me that I am too small for them, men who do not read profiles and then slam me when they do read it and since they didn't read it correctly the first time I am the one with the problem when I was marvelous until they read my profile....go figure

At least they are putting up their own photos. Yours are so obviously fake. Where did you download those from anyway? Put up photos of yourself before your criticize the looks of others.

I'm 6'1" and 180 lbs. Stomach's fat, but I'm skinny up top, and muscular below (because I walk 40 min every day). I thought average was the most reasonable answer.

I think average depends on location. I just did a cross country with a buddy of mine and we like to hit strip clubs when we find them. I am really shocked at the different sizes of the ladies across the USA. Depending on the area is the "average" build. Some states I spent more money in then others.

Body type in the on-line dating world is a bit difficult to figure out. For one thing, people are limited to the choices presented. Different descriptions mean different things to different people, and geography has a lot to do with it.

I have traveled extensively for work the past few years. In Kentucky, the 5th most obese state in the country, "average" meant anything up to 200 pounds at 5'4". If you looked around on the street, that was about average. "A few extra pounds" meant between 200 and 300, and "large" ... well, I had a date with a woman who was 5'10" and 320 who listed herself as "a few extra pounds".

I went from Kentucky to California. The first thing I noticed was that people were thinner, women and men. Also, I've found that younger women tend to label themselves as larger than older women do. Where a young woman might say "large", an older woman might say anything from average to a few extra pounds, so it also depends a lot on self image.

Not sure how it works with women, but for the most part when a man says average build it really means a little over weight. When they say a few extra pounds, it really means fat. Just like a man seems to think average means 5'9" tall and weighs 200 pounds.

I put average on mine, but at 5'4" tall, and 120 pounds, to me that is over weight, even though everyone tells me I'm not.

Really not trying to sound mean, but you have got to be kidding me. You really think that 180 pounds is light for 5'8" tall? Going by a weight chart online for a medium frame you should weigh between 145-157. Even for a large frame the top weight was 172. For a small frame it was between 140-148.

According to the same site at 5'4" tall for a small frame I should weigh between 114-127(I weigh 120, but would love to lose about 15).

No offence taken...bcsofnc57........something you might want to consider is........someone carrying a large percentage of body fat compared to someone with minimal body fat( me )........will look completely different.
Actually, i have a small frame.......just jumped on the scales.....came in at 176 ibs.....maybe i could change it to slim........c'mon.....i've dropped 4 lbs.

Average build on here means overweight. Sadly, it's so incorrectly used that if one is actually "average", you must put fit or athletic, or slim... as our perceptions have become so skewed in this "super size" world we live in because most people in this country (U.S.) ARE at least slightly overweight. At 5'10", I am probably a small to medium frame and average should be about 135-155. At 140, I am what should be average weight for my height but I'm very muscular so I put athletic. If I were less than 135, I'd put slim and more than 160, I'd put a few extra pounds.

I think average should mean, they don't work out or are not that active, but they still look good enough to most people of the opposite gender.

Average is in the eyes of the beholder............ Updated pic's are the ticket..... If I put my weight on there the men would freak ......It's not the weight but what body type you are. I have a friend that weights 30lbs less than me and is quite chubby!! She has a small frame and can't carry it. I have always weighed more than I look. I have a lot of muscle mass and as a waitress/bartender a lot of leg and butt muscle. After 6 Kids .........lol........... I should put Hot MaMa.............

Oh and BTW ........ stretching the truth is not gender controlled ............

Yes.....most will put "average" down because that is what those around them have put and they are the same, which is far from what average is meant to be on a profile.

The average person that puts that down is over weight. There is no getting around that because they look like most others around them, and they are over weight as well....

If most would follow the "BMI" tables, then they would know what is considered generally for slim, athletic, average, over weight, and obese. Does not fit each and every person or body, but it is much more specific for body types over all than what most put on their profile now.

There is a range for weight compared to height, and once you use that as a base, you can adjust by pant or dress size. Someone that is 5'10" will not normally have a "BMI" of 21 to 24 and a pant waist size of 40.....just does not happen. Same goes for a woman that has a "BMI" of 21 to 24 will not have a dress size that is 14 or higher.

If you are in good shape, your body fat will show that, and most fitness trainers will tell you that 10% or less is a goal that gets you closer to better than average, and if you can keep it under 15%, you are what the tables project as average, and if much more the scales will tip to needing to lose weight, not ideal, or obese.

These are just general goals and each body can be different depending on genetics, working out, etc., but just as height can give you a foundation for an individual, so can the "BMI" as a foundation to compare it with.

Just my opinion.......

I noticed the same thing - with men and women!!!
Anymore "average" seems to be overweight in the U.S.
My English friend is appauled by the amount of obese people on this side of the pond (she has lived here about 10 yrs.). I am not even in the greatest shape, but I am not interested in someone with a big gut, which seems to be the average these days.

I have average on my profile because to be honest after reading all these forums I have no clue what my body type is anymore. Now I think it might mean I am lazy as well. I tell ya this is one thing about online dating that got me to take my old profile off here and put this one up and just be here for the forums.

My old profile had A few extra pounds, I had full body shot and had in the about me section that I was 5'8 135lbs and size 6. Let them figure it all out on thier own. People use all kinds of different charts, and measurements to decide if a person is or is not over weight, most of the ones out there are not reliable. very muscular people will be a higher weight but by no means, means over weight.

5'8" and 135 pounds with a size 6 dress is far from being over weight or obese, and you know that very well.

Most would enjoy knowing and dating another that is within that BMI table...... Now, if you told me that you were 5'8" and 135 pounds and wore a size 12 dress, I would think of you as a few pounds over weight, just as you should consider me at 5'10" and over 180 with a waist of close to 40 inches.

Thank goodness I am not, but to many of my friends and those I know are. If I am at 5'10", and 180 or less, with a waist of 34 then I think we both know neither of us would be over weight and considered what is average according to the scales and hopefully for attractiveness for one another......

Just my opinion.......

And you are so right. I just still have no idea what it really means for online dating. I have seen people say 5'8 115lbs - 120lbs. I am over weight in that case. I just covered all the basis. LMAO

What I was getting at it I just left it up to the person veiwing my profile to make the judgement call on their own.

It just becomes much easier if all would put multiple current pictures, that they update often, that show what they look like overall....head to foot.......

Those of us that seek others to know better as a date or potential relationship will use pictures to help us decide to connect or not, along with the profile comments about what you are looking for, and wanting as well.

I can usually tell over all, by pictures, if one is attractive to me or not, and within what I am seeking as a potential partner. If I can not, I will ask for more to know that, ask certain questions to get more of an understanding about who and what they are both mentally and physically, and either meet quickly or cam in order to step up the process and know if we are going to be just friends or more.

Just my opinion.......

I had three pictures on my profile and the oldest one was Dec/07 Feb/08 and Apr/08 one was a full body pic. very recent pictures. However reading in the forums here and at other places you find that so much is put onto body image online that I found it was just not for me anymore.

I seen a news clip about different countrys and they was discussing what country had the most over weight people. I think USA was right at the top if I remember right. So the average American is over weight. So just a little over weight is the "new average"
I think they need a couple more options on this site in the weight options. Built for comfort could be one Built for endurance could be another.

It is quite amusing how average for most people actually means overweight. Not to get too far on a tangent but America has truly become super sized. I was in TCBY the other day and had to order a small coffee because the "regular" was actually like a 24 ounce type thing. Its not just food either that I've noticed this trend. I've seen it in clothing as well. This is easily solved if people supply better pictures. PoF could do itself a favor also by providing more weight options to display.

To get one piece of french toast at Dennys you have to order it off the "kiddie" menu or be able to eat a grand slam size meal. They do not offer ala cart.

Those numbers are for men of course but they're actually a little low. 5-15% is considered fitness level but up to 20% is considered "acceptable" or average. 25% or over is considered obese. For women, 10-12% is "essential" fat. Up to the low 20's is considered fitness level and up to 30% is acceptable. I would guess that very few people know their body fat percentage, and even if they do, it depends on how they had it measured.

I agree with our food portions being way off as well. When we go out to eat, I find it makes much more sense to split a plate with my 8 year old son as a single serving is way to big for most people! If I'm by myself, I count on having a nice dinner and lunch to bring to work the next day. What's worse is that fewer and fewer restaurants will bring you a "half portion" so many people simply eat the whole thing 'cause they hate leftovers, or wasting money! Oh! and don't get me started on buffet restaurants! OMG!

Sometimes I still fight with that notion of wasting money versus eating the right portions. It can be tough, especially when the plates are so huge. I got some type of chicken dish at Red Lobster and it had not one but two huge pieces of chicken, not to mention the sides. Needless to say, there was a lot left over on the plate at the end of the night but such is life when you are watching how you eat.

Another thing I have to do, when eating out, is tailor the meal as much as I can to being more healthy. Sometimes this means asking for no sauce, no cheese, substitute of some kind or anything else that can cut down on the caloric intake. Lol, and I haven't eaten at a buffet in years so thats one way of avoiding that probem.
